2 Ka Leo Mekokiko Aug - Sept Ministry Musings from the District Superintendent ANNUAL CONFERENCE MISSION STATEMENT: Inspiring the World as Passionate Followers of Jesus Christ So All May Experience God s Life-Giving Love A truth of life is encapsulated in the story of the little boy with a red wagon. The little boy loved to play with his little red wagon. But one day, it suddenly occurred to him that he could not recall ever seeing an adult playing with a little wagon. The moment that thought struck him, he burst into tears. His mother was finally able to get out of him what was troubling him. He sobbed through his tears that he did not want to grow up, because he was afraid that when he did he would not be able to play with his little red wagon. Life is one change after another, one transition following another. Heraclites, the Greek philosopher, contended that the only constant in life was change. This means that as long as we are alive we are forever making changes and beginning again, that life is full of endings and beginnings, that what we counted on as absolutes are never as fixed as we assumed. One of the marks of growing older, of moving toward maturity, of taking deeper soundings of faith, is coping with change in which we must let go of the past and the present to embrace something new in the future. That is when we must take the risks and adventure toward horizons whose outcomes are unknown. To cope with change is to discover how transitions also include moments of testing and temptations, moments when our souls are seized and our character and faith in God are revealed for what they are. But because changes are part of God s plan for life, and because God meets us in the now or never moments of transition, we must say YES to God, we must summon the courage and face forward, engage the changes that challenge us, and trust God with the outcome. Dear friends in Hawaii District, I am in the stage of New Beginnings with you right now. It is always exciting and anxious at the same time to have a new beginning. However I am glad to be in a new beginning with you. I look forward to making new friends and working with you for mission and ministry of the church. My heart goes out to meet you in Christian love. And as time passes that mutual love will grow into a fellowship which exceeds all other human relationships. In the midst of uncertainties, I feel God s guidance. God is always good and faithful, the God of yesterday, today and days to come. God challenges us to meet new situations and new beginnings. God keeps knocking on the doors of our hearts and minds, eager to offer new opportunities. Let us trust God s goodness and working together for his glory. Pastor Se Hee Han District Superintendent

3 Ka Leo Mekokiko Aug - Sept AS WE JOURNEY May our journey lead us into a new place, a place where new life and new beginnings are waiting to be discovered. Aloha and E Komo Mai! I want to express my gratitude to members of the Nomination Committee and all of you, the local church, and our DS, for your confidence entrusted in me to serve as your Hawaii District Lay Leader. AS WE JOURNEY It is with great joy I commit to the church this noble and high calling. As I embark this pilgrimage, I invite you all to journey with me. And together as United Methodist, we journey the path that is before us. AS WE JOURNEY we see a new face, we hear a new voice. We welcome, in the spirit of Ohana, E Komo Mai to our new District Superintendent the Rev. Dr. Se Hee Han. AS WE JOURNEY the path that is before us, led by the Spirit. May our journey be of one that is filled with Christ s love, compassion, and joy. May our journey lead us into a new place. A place filled with the beauty of Christ. A place where new life and new beginnings are waiting to be discovered. May our journey embrace our Annual Conference Vision Statement: Inspiring the world as passionate followers of Jesus Christ so all may experience God s life-giving love. I am excited to start on this journey that is before us and may our journey be filled with hope that the best is yet to come. One in Christ, Francis Fukumoto Hawaii District Lay Leader
