1 Anderson District Lay Servant Ministries It s a year of change, full of new possibilities and new opportunities for serving the Lord. Have you ever wondered how a good worship service gets put together? Do you need tips on how to improve your speaking of God s word? Are you interested in how the United Methodist Church is put together? Have you heard a call to be a Lay Servant and want on overview of what it means to be a Lay Servant? Now is the time for you to explore these options. Please join us for the spring Anderson District Lay Servant Ministries school. Where: Friendship UMC, Seneca When: October 8 and 9, 2016 Courses offered: Basic Lay Servant Ministry, Spiritual Gifts, Discipleship Cost: $45 if registered before September 26 th, $50 if registered between September 26th and October 3rd. Classes are open to everyone, regardless of whether or not they are interested in becoming a certified lay servant. For those who are or wish to be a certified lay servant, remember that you must take a course beyond the Basic course at least once every 3 years.

3 NOTE ON THE CLASSES Adult Basic Introductory class to Lay Servant Ministries. Covers the underlying information necessary for all other classes. Required for 1 st time candidates and for Lay Servants seeking to recertify. 1 st timers will be certified as Local Church Lay Servants. Spiritual Gifts This course helps participants understand spiritual gifts and how the church can use them to fulfill its mission and ministry. Participants will also learn what it means to be a spiritual leader and will be equipped to lead others in exploring and using their spiritual gifts. Required for the Lay Speaker track. Discipleship This course focuses on the concept of the household of God, Scripture as divine revelation, Wesleyan understandings of grace, and the importance of the class leader in the development of the Methodist movement. Please Note: Anyone may take a Lay Servant class. If you are interested in continuing education and study about the United Methodist Church and growing deeper in the Lord s care, please consider taking a class. You will not be disappointed, and you will be welcomed. At the end of the class you will be receiving a participation certificate of attendance only. Other Learning Options Available Churches or groups of churches in a community that wish to offer a specific Lay Servant course at their chosen location and time must have a minimum of seven students enrolled. Students must pay for the class. The class will be held on two days, Friday evening and Saturday. A certified teacher must teach the class. Pinewood Avenue, Hartsville, SC This fee covers the cost of the course book, postage, supplies, and meals. On-site/late registration will be $ Lay Servants must take a ten (10) hour course every three years to remain certified. If you did not take a course in 2015 or 2016, then you must enroll in a course this year to maintain your certification. If you wish to receive credit for a course taken in another district, a copy of your certificate should be attached to your registration form. The courses offered are listed on the registration form. Polity & Practice In the UMC This advanced course is a discussion of our life together in our United Methodist connection Why do we do things the way we do? - An overview of the structure and organization of our United Methodist Church. Aging & Ministry in the 21 st Century This advanced course discusses the unique concerns of ministry to aging congregations, and how to utilize the strengths and expertise of our more experienced in the 21st-century church. Leading in Prayer - Participants in this advanced course will develop skills and techniques on how to pray in private and in public, and grow in confidence, while leading others to a closer relationship with Our Lord. Five Practices of Fruitful Congregations This advanced course discusses five practices, both personal, and communal, that are always found within the healthy congregation, and methods for developing those best practices within your own church congregation. Evangelism This advanced course leads participants to learn from John Wesley how to practice relational evangelism; learning that evangelism involves not only sharing our faith with others but welcoming others into a community where all can grow in faith. Intro to the Book of Discipline - This advanced course will help you to better understand the Biblical basis of the United Methodist Church s book of law. You will learn about the 200+ years of history of General Conferences that now form the United Methodist Church. You will study the Book of Discipline as the means of setting forth the laws, plan, polity, and process by which Methodists govern themselves. You will talk about the theological basis of the United Methodist Church in the Bible and the social principles that we hold dear.
