This year there will be individual training sessions for each office led by the district officers. Come with any questions you have about how United Methodist Women work in the church. Your district officers are looking forward to sharing their ideas and expertise with you. At several recent events we talked about our Legacy and the history of United Methodist Women. Now we are looking toward the future. Our theme for Leadership Enrichment is Embracing the Present, Envisioning the Future. We need to really know who we are: What is our purpose in the missions of the church? As we look to the future, what are our goals? Look at our Statement of Purpose: Our purpose is to know God this is personal. We are to be in supportive fellowship this is community. Our mission is in the world this is God present through us. How does each one of us work toward this purpose today? What are your plans to work toward this purpose in the future? We need to move forward. Our speaker, Stacy Elsasser, will share with us about building leadership in our organizations. We need to identify our leaders of the future - Embrace what we are doing - Envision what we will be doing next. See you in January at Scottsdale UMC! 2 Dear Sisters in Christ, What a great God we serve! The East District United Methodist Women were blessed to gather on a rainy day on October 13 at our Annual Celebration. Thank you one and all who made the effort to attend! Now, let s look ahead! I am looking forward to getting your local unit report of Mission Today accomplishments. They will be highlighted at the Leadership Enrichment Event on January 19, Please remember the following end-of-the-year dates: Dec 10, 2018: Final Remittance & End-of-the-Year Spending Report to Linda Moore at Lamphx@cox.net Dec 15, 2018: Reading Program Participants Report to Judith Humbert at JudithHumbert@cox.net or 8310 E Lewis Ave, Scottsdale, AZ Dec 31, 2018: Mission Today Goals to June Hanson at JuneHanson@juno.com or 522 E Malibu Dr, Tempe, AZ Dec 31, 2018: 2019 Local UMW Officers List to Yvonne Fischer at yvonne047@gmail.com Dec 31, 2018: Living the Charter Report to Tish Roberts at werob@juno.com ( ) Mar 31, 2019: Local presidents to submit End-of-Year Local Unit Membership Count to National UMW at (click on purple box) Just a word of clarification regarding your district officers. These terms may be confusing. The District Officers are the ones who are elected or affirmed as continuing in office at the Annual Celebration. These include the president, vice-president, secretary, treasurer, chairperson of committee on nominations, secretary of program resources, communications coordinator, and the four mission coordinators, plus members of the Committee on Nominations. The East District members of the Committee on Nominations keep a separate identity. Please know that the District Leadership Team also includes all Conference United Methodist Women officers who reside within the East District. Hopefully you will be seeing more of these women this coming year. I refer to this entire group (including the Committee on Nominations) as the East District United Methodist Women Mission Team! The bottom line is that we are all here to serve you - the local UMW members!! Love & joy to you and yours this Christmas season, June Hanson, East District President junehanson@juno.com PAGE 2
3 Hello Ladies! Cyndi Heinecke here!! COMMITTEE ON NOMINATIONS 2019 Here We Come!! Thank you for electing me as your Chair of Nominations for East District. Having served with United Methodist Women actively since 1998 I am pleased to continue serving you on this district team. This is my first stint as Chair of Nominations. It is so amazing that this organization has held on strong for 150 years and women from all over the nation have been leaders at all levels! It is humbling to me to think of the diversity of leadership that this organization has created. We have created leaders at the National level, Jurisdictional level, Conference level, District level and local level. If you are a leader in this organization and are reading this now, Thank You! If you have served in the past, we Thank You! If you are considering serving now, Thank You! Mission work is so very important to the vitality of this organization. Just a few minutes alone with the Prayer Calendar and reading all the names (from young women to seniors who are serving actively in the mission field) shows us what we are all about. Reading their encouraging words and quips of life in the field is powerful indeed. We can certainly learn from them! Ladies, I pray for us all now to have a great year in East District United Methodist Women. I pray for our President June Hanson for strength, wisdom and faith in all she does to lead us. I pray for all of our district officers - those who have been serving and those who are new. I pray for new ideas to form in our hearts, and for deeds of action to take place in our local units. My greatest prayer is one of thanks to all of you for the opportunity to serve you in this great organization that has lived on through the past 150 years largely because of women just like you and me. We all have so much to gain to continue the work that was started so many years ago. Blessings to you and yours for a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!! Cyndi Heinecke, Chair of Nominations, East District United Methodist Women cyndi.heinecke@yahoo.com PAGE 3

6 SPIRITUAL GROWTH As we enter into the holiday season, it is sometimes easy to get too busy attending to the secular side of Christmas such as gift buying, house decorating, cookie baking, and party going. Let s make a conscious effort to keep Christ as the center of our celebration. As Henri J.M. Nouwen stated in his book, With Burning Hearts: "It is so easy to narrow Jesus down to OUR Jesus, to OUR experience of his love, to OUR way of knowing him. But Jesus left us so as to send his Spirit, and his Spirit blows where it wants. The community of faith is the place where many stories can be very different from each other. They might even seem to conflict. But as we keep listening attentively to the Spirit manifesting itself through many people, in words as well as in silence, through confrontation as well as invitation, in gentleness as well as firmness, with tears as well as smiles - then we can gradually discern that we belong together as one body knitted together by the Spirit of Jesus." It is when we worship together as the body of Christ that Christmas truly comes alive in our hearts. Linda Munsil, Mission Coordinator for Spiritual Growth lindamunsil@cox.net Hear ye! Hear ye! Census reports are due electronically by March 31, They can be submitted by the local president or membership chairperson to Click on the purple box to submit your information. Be prepared to enter your starting membership, members added, and members that are deceased or moved away. Let us strive to have 100% participation for If you need help completing the census, please feel free to call me at or send me an to mjmermer7@aol.com. Holidays can be a lonely time for our United Methodist members who are no longer able to attend meetings. Consider giving shut-ins a phone call, sending a Christmas card, or dropping by for a holiday visit. Merry Christmas to all of our wonderful units. Marilyn Seese, East District Membership Care Chairperson mjmermer7@aol.com PAGE 6
7 I m now wearing 2 hats!! Besides being your Communications Coordinator, I m your new Secretary! My next official duty as secretary is to create the 2019 East District Directory (with June Hanson s help!). Dec 31, 2018 is the deadline for sending me your 2019 Local UMW Officers List. Thank you to Central, Cross in the Desert, Grace, North Scottsdale and Sun Lakes who have already sent in their lists! I understand some units don t meet until late December to install new officers. If that s the case, please send me your list as soon as you can! February 15 is the deadline for the next Circuit Rider! I m so blessed to be part of UMW and the wonderful women in this organization, especially our East District United Methodist Women Mission Team! Thank you! Yvonne Fischer, East District Comm. Coord. and Secretary edumwomen@gmail.com Anybody remember Woman s Society of Christian Service (WSCS) and Wesleyan Service Guild (WSG)? I found this article in my Mom s (Geneva Howe) UMW things. I m guessing it was from the World Outlook magazine! Thought you all might find this interesting and appropriate in light of our 150 th Anniversary! Yvonne Emblems are symbolic visible signs suggesting ideas. In 1941, as the result of prayer, thought and careful workmanship, the emblem of the Woman's Society of Christian Service, beautiful in concept and design, was adopted. Each part was chosen for an important reason. The golden laurel wreath, which encircles the other symbols, represents victory. This victory is our faith in the power of the Christian message to solve the problems and meet the needs of our world. The triangle is one of the oldest Christian symbols. It represents the Trinity Father, Son and Holy Spirit. In our emblem we think of it also as challenging us to three fields of service at home, overseas and in the area of Christian social relations. Could the triangle not also stand for our threefold dedication of prayer, service and gifts? The hemispheres express the idea that the "world is our parish" and our responsibilities are limited only by its boundaries. The cross is at the center of the emblem as it is at the center of Christian faith. Without the cross at the center, life is meaningless and shallow. The emblem of the Wesleyan Service Guild incorporates much of the same symbolism, the triangle, the words "The world to serve" and the cross. In place of the wreath there is a circle, which symbolizes the feeling of belonging and there is also a torch to be carried high and forward to show others the way. The flag on the emblem is the universal symbol of Christianity its white ground representing peace and purity, the blue field, fidelity and truth, and the cross signifying the sacrifice of Christ. Because of all the sacred and deep meaning expressed by our emblems they should never be worn lightly, as a decoration, or any kind of charm. They should be worn proudly, never in our own strength, but in the knowledge that God's strength is sufficient for our weakness. The emblems of the Woman's Society of Christian Service and Wesleyan Service Guild are full of meaning and are precious to the women of The Methodist Church. Mrs. Irene Ingham (Editor s Note: Many thanks to Bev Secrist who helped convert the magazine article and emblems into this article!) PAGE 7
