3 December 23, 2012 SPERA IN DEO In my living room in the rectory I have a beautiful plaque of Our Lady of Perpetual Help. To be honest I cannot recall who gave it to me, but it has on it a wonderful maxim of Padre Pio. It reads: Pray, Hope and Don t Worry. What great advice! The holy Capuchin knew what he was talking about. People all over the world readily understood that his advice was to be valued and they came to him seeking counsel on a multiplicity of subjects. Basically they wanted to know what to do with their lives and especially the spiritual side of those lives. Padre Pio is a relatively recent saint, dying only in September of He was on the fast track to sainthood and was canonized by Pope John Paul II on June 12, This is a very different Christmas from many we have experienced. Its brilliance and eternal beauty has been touched by the violet of our sadness over the tragic events that occurred last Friday in Connecticut. If you are anything like me, you have probably been thinking how relatively unimportant so many things in our lives really are. Christmas parties are great, but the One these parties proclaim and celebrate is the real point of everything. The details of the party are insignificant as well are so many other things that surround the celebration of Christ s birth. At the time of this extraordinary Christmas I urge you to enter into prayer and talk to the Savior of the World and try once again to understand and believe even more in the boundless love He has for you and indeed for all of us. No one is excluded from that love even ones we may erroneously consider unworthy of that Infinite Ocean of Mercy and Kindness. God is not narrow-minded and limited. We are, but He is not! As an altar boy at St. Joseph s hundreds of times I answered the priest in Latin and said Spera in Deo Hope in God. Last night in saying the Rosary I was thinking of so many people who have helped me in my life and what a vast difference they made in my life. They were patient, kind, tolerant of my short comings and unfailingly available even when I inconvenienced them time and time again. They were sure signs of hope in times of uncertainty and sorrow. Jesus Christ is our hope and no matter what He will never fail any of us. Christmas is the absolute proof of a God Who loves us so much that He runs after us to draw us to His Heart. If you think about it, you will quickly come up with a list of people who have been so very good to you. They are a reflection of Jesus and His undying love for you. If they are alive, call them up and thank them. Mention them to Christ at Christmas Mass. As for you, be a living sign of hope and forgiveness that is so much a part of the Infinite Love of Jesus Christ. Padre Pio s last piece of advice, Don t worry is so appropriate for this Christmas when our lives have been visibly touched by the sadness of Newtown. There are so many things about which we can do so little; what we can do is place them in the hands of Jesus and Mary. I will remember all of you and your families at my Christmas Masses. May this Christmas be filled with all good things from the Heart of God and may Jesus and His Blessed Mother console our friends in Connecticut as only they can. Merry Christmas! In Jesus and Mary, Monsignor James M. McDonald

13 CHRISTMAS CUSTOMS REVISITED In Slavic countries there are many customs connected with the celebration of the Christ Child s birth. One such tradition is the breaking of Oplatek or Christmas wafer. The wafer, which looks much like unconsecrated communion bread, is traditionally broken at grace before the Christmas Eve meal. If you are interested in making the tradition part of your Christmas celebration, please purchase an Oplatek at the Rectory office ($2.00 donation). LIGHTHOUSE CATHOLIC MEDIA This year we wait for the Messiah within the context of the YEAR of FAITH and no one knew more about waiting in faith and preparing in hope for the Messiah than Our Lady. She hastens to receive the longawaited One in a pilgrimage of faith, from place to place, not finding a suitable dwelling to lay down the Blessed One! During this hallowed time when we are waiting for the Prince of Peace, may we have the patience to accept the reality of a sinful world where we live, without it dampening our enthusiasm, confidence and hope. May the Mother of God be a constant presence in our own pilgrimage of faith. May we receive in our hearts the Child she carries for us, the One which was wholly sufficient to Himself, but became susceptible to cold, to hunger, to thirst and pain! In this YEAR of FAITH lets pray to receive the grace to see the sublime dignity of the human person, ratified in His Incarnation, to perceive the gift of human love participant in His own love for us, to recognize the beauty of the natural word as a reflection of the grandeur of God. Because this year holds the promise of special graces, we shall encounter Christ in the form of the Baby Child, we shall enter into a personal relationship with the One who so loved us that became a helpless baby and that encounter would totally change us!! May we all have eyes and ears to recognize and receive His beautiful presence in a new way during this year, and may we follow Him with confidence and courage! I am always grateful for the opportunity to bring to all of you these CDs so inspiring! At this particular time, Advent and Christmas, you respond with such kindness, almost all the CDs with a Christmas theme are taken before the season is over! I reflect on the good these teaching works do on countless souls in need of solid doctrine. Thank you for your good work! With prayers that you and your loved ones have a blessed Christmas Season! Toti Conforti
