3 March 31, 2013 NEVER LOSE HOPE! This week while I was praying the Breviary (the prayers the priest must say every day), one very short sentence jumped off the page. Never lose hope. I thought to myself: Now here is the perfect message for Easter. Try as I might, I cannot think of a more important thing I want to say to all of us as we celebrate the Resurrection of the Lord. In three short words is encapsulated the meaning of the triumph of Christ two thousand years in the past and the triumph of Christ today. Easter is not just about what Christ did, it is about what He is doing today in your life and mine. Those of you who listen to me preach know how very often I go back to our Blessed Mother and talk about how much she meant to Jesus and how terribly important she is in our own lives. I firmly believe that she carries us to God and takes care of us on our way just as she took care of Jesus. Nobody ever loved Him the way she did and no one was more brokenhearted when he died. This morning I began to think of all that she went through during that first Holy Week. How it must have pained her to see Him condemned and betrayed and that is to say nothing of the scourging and the crowning of thorns. She saw her Son made out to be a fool and a criminal. She watched in stunned silence and horror as he was led away to Calvary. And then came the worst. I do not even like to think about it she saw them nail Jesus to the cross and for three hours watched him die. What could be worse? When it was all over Our Lady, exhausted and broken in spirit, went home. Probably the faithful St. John the Evangelist took her to his house. It must have been the most difficult of evenings for both of them. I wondered what they talked about and whether they cried. It must have been a real test of faith to believe in the midst of defeat and death that Christ would be true to His word and keep His promise: Destroy this temple and in three days I will raise it up again. (John 2:19) Mary certainly knew about this startling prophecy and she of all people knew that He meant exactly what He said. Everything might seem to be contrary and all the appearances pointed to utter hopelessness-christ and His work appeared to be destroyed but the exact opposite was the case. Mary was able to believe in sadness and during those desperate hours of Good Friday and Holy Saturday, she never ever lost faith or hope in Jesus Christ. Things began to change and rapidly! Holy Saturday with all its emptiness and impossible gloom gave way to the splendor of the Physical Resurrection of Jesus. Mary Magdalene had gone to the tomb to anoint a dead body, but the tomb was empty and suddenly she saw Christ, the Eternal Son of God. But she mistakenly thought he was the gardener until Christ spoke to her. When he said Mary she was transformed into a real believer and ran to tell the apostles the fantastic news: The Lord had indeed risen! (CONTINUED)

4 Scripture doesn t relate it, but I believe that even before Jesus saw Mary Magdalene, he visited His mother. What a meeting that must have been! I can picture Our Lady smiling softly and Jesus telling her how sorry He was to put her through everything. But she understood now even if she failed to understand why He had to get lost in the temple. Everything was forgotten about in that supreme moment of joy. The faith and hope of Mary should be a great lesson to us. Never lose hope! Pope Francis said it so well at the Palm Sunday Mass in Rome: Do not be men and women of sadness: A Christian can never be sad! Never give way to discouragement. I can t think of anything better to say at Easter. Never lose hope and spread it wherever you go especially today! Happy Easter! In Jesus and Mary, Monsignor James M. SUGGESTIONS FOR THE MONTH APRIL 2013 This entire month falls during the Easter season and after a fruitful and blessed Lent we are able to celebrate the joy of the Resurrection. Even nature would join us with blooms and early flowers, as to follow our cry, Christ is risen, Christ is truly risen. Christ, the Lamb of God, is Christ our Light, the Eternal Priest who waits for us to meet Him in the Eucharist to have a special moment of grace and personal encounter with the author of all holiness. Now that the days are longer, make a commitment to attend Mass as often you can. Try also to attend to your neighbor s needs, especially if they are elderly or infirm. It is a way to witness to your faith! April 7 is Divine Mercy Sunday, a most beautiful liturgy, and on April 8 is the Solemnity of the Annunciation; pray an extra Rosary in thanksgiving for Our Lady YES to God. Share your reactions and feedback at pastoralcouncil@staidanparish.org or call (516) x9592. St. Aidan s Pastoral Council tries to be responsive to the needs of our parish.

11 LIGHTHOUSE CATHOLIC MEDIA HE IS RISEN!! Indeed HE IS TRULY RISEN!!! Easter is the feast of Feasts, the greatest joy and gladness of all Christians. We shall be an Alleluia People!. As the Responsorial Psalm tells us This is the day the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad. Our Faith in Christ is cause for us to be a joyful people. When we read the Scriptures of this day, we encounter the disciples and we learn that, when they met Jesus, they found new boldness and courage to believe and to witness to others about Christ. We shall learn from them to witness about our Faith, because Colossian 3:1-4 proclaim, You were raised with Christ.and you too will appear with Him in glory The truth of these words must impact the way we live each day! As we pray and thank the Lord for His Resurrection, we ask Him for the grace to grow in faith and trust in Him, to grow in boldness to share the good news of our Faith with others. We pray with Mary in the Regina Coeli. Christ, whom you bore is risen!!... This is the day of the Church s Easter joy, and we look to you, O Mary, we look to your joyful heart. Pray for us! That the light of the Risen one be present along the paths of the people of God! This week we have powerful CDs Who Do You Say That I Am? by Father R. Barron which explains how Jesus fulfills the tasks of being the promised Messiah, God become man, Our Savior. No Price Too High by Deacon Alex Jones, is about the conversion of a Pentecostal pastor and his Congregation. Very inspiring, a sacrificial yet triumphant journey of a man with a deep love for Christ. These are powerful CDs to listen to and give away, pick them up from the kiosk, as many you can, wonderful gifts for Easter! 14 FINANCIAL PLANNING MEETING Wednesday, April 17 th at 7:00 PM Msgr. Kirwin Hall SIMPLIFY YOUR LIFE Studies have shown that at least 70% of the American population does not have a plan regarding their personal financial strategy for retirement income as well as an Estate Plan in the event of disability or death. Furthermore, unforeseen life altering events such as catastrophic illness, divorce and caring for aging parents can adversely affect the accumulation and distribution of assets resulting in a shortage of funds for savings, retirement planning and college funding. There are several questions we all ask ourselves from time to time regarding the present state of our financial affairs and the fact of the matter is that, while the clock is ticking, most people are procrastinating about the need to focus on the task at hand, How to secure our financial well-being in a financially insecure world. We need to be truthful to ourselves in answering the questions that lie at the very core of a well-based plan: - Are you risking your principal and jeopardizing your financial future with positions in the market that are complicated and out of your control? - Is denial a retirement plan? - Are you waiting until your child s 17th birthday to start planning for college? - Does your retirement planning game need a second look? - Would you rather be in control of your financial future maintaining the values that are so important to you and your family? - Do you really understand that life insurance was designed in mind to financially protect your loved ones, whose lives are completely dependent on you, in the event of your death? Estate planning, incorporating financial strategies, is the process of mapping out how you want your personal and financial matters to be handled during periods of incapacity, disability or at your death. An Estate Plan should be carefully implemented with the assistance of an Estate Planning attorney-one who specializes in wills and trusts with an understanding of the ever-changing IRS codes that apply to the structuring of the documents. Everyone over the age of 18 needs an Estate Plan as it is not just for the wealthy. In fact, Estate planning can be more important for the smaller estate to assure that your loved ones will be provided for and not overly burdened by personal and financial matters during a time of crisis. You ll spend a lifetime accumulating your wealth and building a legacy that has the potential to grow for generations that follow. Exercise the due diligence necessary by implementing plans to protect the financial well-being of your family. One single unforeseen event could devastate your family s future. Plan ahead and have the peace of mind knowing that you ve secured yourself and your loved ones.

15 In the 2nd reading today, St. Paul reminds the Colossians that they have been raised with Christ, exhorting them to be intent on the things above rather than on things of earth. We, too, have been raised with Christ. Let us rejoice and be glad!
