Her riveting faith memoir will spur you to explore your own questions about God s presence and seeming absence in our broken world. 7 Opportunities for Adult Education PAGE 7 A World Worth Saving If you re weary of the Lent-asusual appeal to give up chocolate, this book study is for you. You ll discover how you can be the hands of Christ in the world. This engaging six-week study for Lent will help you grow in your prayer life. You ll pray about daily news reports, discover the needs of persons around you, and see how you can respond with love and compassion. Experience Lent in an entirely new way with A World Worth Saving. Weekly themes include: fasting from apathy, serving others, feeding the hungry, seeking justice, offering healing and extending friendship. Book: $9.50 Scheduling based on interest. The God We Can Know This meaningful & inviting 7-week study helps us find an answer to the most essential question in the Christian faith, Who do you Give It Up! This Lenten study reflects on all the things that hold the attention, occupy the mind and time yet still isolate us from God and the world around us. Things like social media, phones, the noise of life, and focus on the external. Imagine taking on the challenge of giving up each of these for a week. Escobedo-Frank takes the reader on a journey of self-discovery, where he or she learns that the power of release brings great gain. The biggest gain is a stronger relationship with Christ. In the release, each person is freed to "give it up" in applause and praise for a life deeply lived in Christ. This thematic seasonal Bible study series is designed for transformation and for applying the study of the Bible to everyday, practical life experience. It is intended to nurture and encourage faith development and spiritual growth. Book: $6.50 Leader: Lisa Srenaski Thursdays at 6:00pm beginning Feb. 19. say I am? One by one, Jesus statements not only grab our imagination by revealing more about his purpose, but they also shape our own Christian identity and connect us to the God of Moses, the Great I Am. Significant yet ordinary images of bread, light, shepherd, vine, & more give us insightful ways to experience Jesus anew and to discover a God who is close and wants to be known. Travel with Rob Fuquay to the Holy Land & see the places where Jesus stood as he disclosed his identity. Through DVD and Bible study, we will explore more deeply these I am sayings and learn more about the God we can know. Book: Wednesdays at 5:30pm beginning Feb. 18, led by Lisa Srenaski $7.00 Thursdays at 10am beginning Feb. 12, led by Lisa Srenaski Sundays at 9:05am beginning Feb. 15, led by John Wilson

8 PAGE 8 Preschool 3-4 year olds participate in a curriculum called, Grow, Proclaim, Serve! In February, we will learn more about Jesus and the ways that he touched people s lives during his life.. We ll have Bible stories, art, games, music, snacks, and much more. Carol Carpenter leads this class, with help from Katrina Miller. Music is led by Becky Engebretson. Youth: Grades 6 12 We r having a fun yr of SS! This year, we re combining classes and alternating teachers every 6 weeks to give you a taste of both traditional and contemporary studies of the Bible, relevant topics of the United Methodist Church and teachings that will help you learn more about your faith. During Lent, we ll be exploring Renegade Gospel by Mike Slaughter. Central to the Christian faith is a man who denies all our pre-conceived notions about what God should look like. Joining his movement will mean coming to terms with the real Jesus ~ the rebel Jesus. Jesus didn t come to start a religion. The rebel Jesus came with a renegade gospel to start a revolution. All youth are invited to join us! We meet downstairs in the youth room. Led by Dawn Smith and Dave & Kim Atkins 2/24: Alexander De La Rosa Elementary During February, Children in grades K 4 will be walking with Jesus. The God We Know will guide our kids through a 7-week study of the I Am sayings of Jesus found in the gospel of John. Designed around a travel theme, kids will walk with Jesus, learn more about his identity and his mission, see the sights he saw, and create a keepsake souvenir for each week s journey. We ll be using the same study series in our adult class. We hope your entire family will join us! We gather in room 115 at 9:05am. Teachers will vary throughout the different rotations. Our 5th 6th grade class is a Bible-focused, hands-on exploration geared toward tweens. We meet in the old computer lab and are led by Jennifer Cousineau. All 3rd 6th graders are invited to join us on the 1st Sunday of every month for Bibles Basics This get-together is for 8 12 year olds who have a Bible & want to learn more about how to use it & apply it to their everyday life! We ll have fun, engage in conversation and put what we learn into practice. Spaghetti and drinks will be provided. Our next session will be Sunday, February 1st 11:30 1:00 in Fellowship Hall For more info or to RSVP, contact Lisa at or lsrenaski@gmail.com

13 Update on Parking Lot Project PAGE 13 St. Paul s United Methodist Church has a rich heritage of Christian ministry, and our beautiful building and grounds provide a welcoming atmosphere for worship and ministry within the community. Our trustees have long identified the parking lot as being a priority that is in need of major work. The lot has been repaired many times over the last many years to the point where the experts tell us that repair is no longer a viable option. The current uneven surface is difficult for many of our older members to navigate, and presents an insurance risk in the event that someone falls and is injured. There are also restrictions placed by the city of Green Bay in terms of what we are allowed to do in repairing/ replacing the parking lot. The trustees have done an excellent job of finding an affordable solution, and this year looks like a favorable time to complete this project compared to bids that have been received in the past. The project was approved by the Board of Trustees, Finance and Church Council with work to be completed this summer. All members and friends will receive a mailing detailing the work and providing a 3 year pledge card to support this project. The full project will cost $85,000. We have $45,000 on hand for the project from our capital improvement fund and will seek to raise the remaining $50,000 over the next three years. Church Council has approved the establishment of a line of credit as needed that will be paid off as monies are received. You will receive more information in the mail over the next few weeks. Members of Trustees and Finance will be available for any detailed question that you may have between services on February 8 and 15 in Room 107. If you have questions after these information sessions, please contact: Kris Engebretson ( ) George Rather ( ) Ken Graetz ( )

15 Reflections... PAGE 15 It is a time of new and exciting changes at St. Paul s! Please take a moment to read about some possible plans for our sanctuary from the Chancel Area Task Force: Chancel Area Changes: New Space for Ministry Over a number of years various discussions have taken place and ideas considered to make the chancel space more flexible physically for various worship and music settings and more visually open to the congregation. Drawings were made by a Chancel Area Task Force in At its January meeting, Church council unanimously approved a proposal presented by members of Music leaders, Trustees, Finance and Reach Teams. With the pipe organ console removed for repair, this was considered the optimal time to make changes. The more detailed proposal and drawing is available at the visitors desk but basically the changes would entail creating a large flat floor space by the removal of pews and carpet with the floor being finished in a hard ceramic/tile. In addition, the opening to the chancel area would be widened and the steps made deeper. This will make all uses of the chancel area easier to see and use for all musical groups, children s programs etc. While there are many benefits to making this change one of the most important is that it creates a small chapel area, which we sorely lack. With the removal of pews, chairs could easily be arranged to accommodate small prayer meetings, mid -week communion services, walk-in private prayer space on special days. Small weddings and funerals could also take place here in a scared, beautiful chapel setting. Funding for these changes will come from a couple of small existing funds designated for worship needs, Lumberjack support and Creative Ministries Fund. Individuals from the Chancel Task Force and the proposal team will be available in the Chancel area after worship services for the next 3-4 weeks to answer any questions that you might have. Task Force: Andy Zipperer, Rob Stevens, Kris Engebretson, John Wilson, Fred Monroe, Rev Diane.
