Sermon title: Called Out? In todays scripture we hear one of the I Am sayings of Jesus. I am the Good Shepherd. Now, most often, I think, we tend to think of the Good Shepherd image as a comforting one. And it is! But, in today s Scripture well? It seems to me we get called out by Jesus! Music: 8:00 10:15 Chancel Choir Sunday, May 14 Mother s Day Scripture: John 14:15-21 Sermon title: Not Alone I will not leave you orphaned says Jesus in our text for today. And its interesting that he uses the word orphaned since he spoke these words just as he was about to leave his beloved disciples and go and die. I will be the first to admit that I have, on more than one occasion, asked this same question that Jesus asked. I have asked it of my children. But I will confess to having thought it in other situations. Why are you just standing there? Don t you have work to do? Well, it feels a bit different...having Jesus ask it of me. Music: TBD

6 Reflections from Rev. Diane PAGE 7 Where words fail, music speaks. Many of us have heard this quote from the Danish author Hans Christian Andersen. Perhaps this, in part, explains why music is so important in Christian worship? Or maybe Victor Hugo the French poet and novelist best captures its essence: Music expresses that which cannot be said and on which it is impossible to be silent. For whatever reason, most Christians would agree that the music that we hear and the music that we make as part of worship takes us deeper into the Christian life and faith than mere words ever would. John Wesley certainly would agree! Did you know that he has directions for singing in church? They were written in 1761 and are still found in the front of every United Methodist Hymnal. Look them up. And smile. Here is one quote: Sing lustily and with a good courage. Beware of singing as if you were half dead, or half asleep. We are so very, very blessed at St Paul s United Methodist Church to have a host of folks who not only understand the importance of music in the Christian life and faith, but they give their time, talent and treasure to making it happen. That includes singers and ringers, directors and instrumentalists, in includes congregation members who sing lustily and with good courage each and every Sunday. It also includes those who put together the bulletins, present the power point, and make sure the microphones are working for the right people at the right times. Come worship with us on Music Sunday during both services on May 21 st. Let s celebrate the music that teaches and inspires us; that moves us into prayer and into praise; that transforms us and sends us forth to better be God s people.
