8 Reflections PAGE 7 Does this sound familiar to you??? If you have been a part of St Paul s for any matter of time at all, you know that we try to be intentional about reaching out with a word of welcome and hope to our neighborhood. We understand that welcome to be a part of our faith witness as we seek to be a Christian community who purpose it is to Plant Faith, Nurture Disciples and Grow in Witness and Service. You know some of the ways we seek to do this: Fear Not Halloween Event, St Paul Cinema, and Vacation Bible School to name just a few. BUT if you thought that this idea of neighborhood outreach was new you would be mistaken. When SPUMC took up residence in this new place of worship here at the corner of Wilson and Division Street in 1954, the congregation discussed how they would reach out and get to know our new neighbors. It was decided that we would invite the neighborhood, indeed the whole community, to a meal! And the Lumberjack Supper was born. The minutes of the Men s Brotherhood established the date of the first supper: Feb 12, And the rest as they say is history. Begun as a men s project only (women provided only the pies) this Northern Lumberjack themed meal brought together our community. One year upwards of 1100 people were served. Neighborhood restaurants and groceries chipped in. Hot water to wash the dishes (before the dishwasher) was hauled in from Fairmont Creamery. Why not come and join in the blessing of being a part of a whole line of the faith-filled, fun loving, welcoming folks called St Paul s United Methodists!? Oh yes. And bring a neighbor. (Thanks to Betty Rogers for her written history of St Pauls Lumber Jack Dinner) Rev Diane
