6 Opportunities for... Adult Education The Life & Religion of the Founding Fathers Over 3 weeks, we ll study the life & religion of our Founding Fathers, using materials from David L. Holms book, Faiths of the Founding Fathers. Other materials will be added from a variety of sources. For anyone interested in the history of our nation, this will add depth to what you already know and a deeper understanding of the role of religion at the dawn of our country. No reading assignments; materials provided at each class. Leader: John Gilman Sundays at 9:05am, beg. Sept. 20, in rm# 110 The Call Follow the journeys of Paul, beginning with his dramatic conversion, as he spread the Gospel. Travel to the sites & explore his conversations with the Corinthians, Galations, etc. In this 6-week study, you will experience faith through Christ s greatest teacher & missionary. The DVD features author Adam Hamilton on location in modern-day Greece & Turkey, guiding us through this study tracing the travel & teachings of Paul. Scheduling will be based on interest. Disciple IV PAGE 7 Twelve Extraordinary Women They were ordinary, common, and in some cases shockingly low-caste, yet each was made extraordinary by her life-changing encounter with God. You ll be challenged & motivated by this poignant & personal look into the lives of some of the Bible s most faithful women. Their struggles & temptations are the same faced by all believers. Author John Mac- Arthur shows that the God to whom they were so committed is the same god who continues to mold & use ordinary people today. 12-week class led by Lisa Srenaski Thursdays at 10am, beg. Sept.10 in rm# 107 Covenant Bible Study This is an in-depth group study in which people read & discuss the Bible together, learning how to love God & each other better. The goal is to deepen our understanding of Scripture while helping us respond together in answering God s call to a faithful life in Jesus. This 24-week experience is divided into three 8- episode segments exploring different aspects of covenant life: creating, living & trusting. This requires daily readings & a weekly meeting. Interest/questions: Lisa at First Session: Thursday, Sept. 10 5:30-7:30 in rm# 110. This is the final study in the 4-Phase Disciple program & is prepared for those who have completed Disciple I, II and/or III. This study concentrates on the Writings (Old Testament books not in the Torah or the Prophets), the Gospel of John & Revelation. Emphasis on the Psalms as Israel s hymn book & prayer book, naturally leads to an emphasis on worship in this study. Present during the entire study is the sense of living toward completion ~ toward the climax of the message & promise, extravagantly pictured in revelation. This is a 32-week study with 3-4 hours of independent study each week & a weekly 2-hour meeting. Begins the week of Sept. 13 with an informational meeting on August 30 at 6:00pm.

August Birthdays: 15: Judy Pauli 17: Kathryn Ault 21: Linda Meetz Reading Corner Not Just a Pretty Face By: Stacy Malkan Category: Social Action The beauty myth is peeled away and the industry s toxic secrets emerge in Not Just A Pretty Face. This book chronicles the quest that led a group of breast cancer activists & environmentalists to the offices of the world s largest cosmetic companies asking some tough questions about the safety of the cosmetics they market as safe. Questions about the UMW Reading Program? Contact Becky Engebretson at or bengebretson@new.rr.com. As a member church, we receive an update from the Ecumenical Partnership for Housing each month. It is provided here, in order to give you a glimpse into this ministry to see what a difference we are all making in our community. Fresh produce anyone? Over the next couple of months, EPH families will receive the bounty of our first EPH garden. The garden, lovingly nicknamed, The Garden of Weeden, is the brainchild of Karen Kegel, unit coordinator from Resurrection Catholic Church. Working with Karen has been Bonnie Goelz. It was Karen s hope to one day create a garden where interested EPH families could learn to garden and benefit from the fresh produce harvested and then a large plot became available at St. Paul s United Methodist Church. Karen, Bonnie, and other volunteers went to work tilling, planting, watering and of course, weeding. Our families will soon get a taste of the garden as produce becomes available. For more information on EPH, contact Lori Ver Boort, EPH Board Member and Member of of St. Paul s, at We need YOU to help with sound & screen on Sunday mornings! Additional people are needed on our rotation of sound techs & projectionists. TRAINING is provided, and they are not difficult tasks. Please contact the church office or speak with Kris Engebretson on a Sunday morning. Thank you!

11 Reflections... PAGE 11 As VBS preparations wrap up and our summer vacation turns into its last month, a new school year is fast approaching and there is much work to be done to organize Christian Education for all ages! I enjoy this time of year with the coordinating of new classes, Bible studies and children s programming and get way too excited about books and studies I find and imagining all the possibilities for all. This congregation, with God s help, has helped me personally grow as a disciple. My life has been transformed and I place responsibility on seeds planted by friends among us, who have invited me to a small group and then those who have encouraged and nurtured me along the way. Discipleship is a process, not a product, and each year that I personally tackle my tasks at St. Paul s, I am reminded of that. So, as we plan and organize Christian education for a new program year, let me challenge you. How are you doing on your discipleship journey? When was the last time you challenged yourself to take an adult class and learn more about your faith among fellow believers? These classes are such a powerful experience that will only transform you! As our congregation keeps our mission in mind, to Plant Faith, Nurture Disciples and Grow in Witness and Service, I pray that you would consider nurturing your faith so that you can indeed be a faith planter and a witness and servant in this world. A great place to start is to look at the upcoming adult education opportunities that are available for all! There is something for everyone, whether you want a lecture type of class on the Founding Fathers or a topical study on Paul or 12 Extraordinary Women from the Bible. If you are looking for an opportunity to really study the Bible with guidance and community, there is Covenant Bible Study, too. Please check out the Adult Education page for more information and by all means if you don t see a class or time that works best, let me know! Grace and Peace, Lisa Srenaski
