2 Dear Parishioners and Visitors, Death and Taxes: two things from which no mortal can escape, so they say. Well, over the next few weeks we get to reflect on both. The end of the month brings us to reflect spiritually on the gift of eternal life and to remember all those who have gone before us. This is meant to strengthen our hope and to renew our belief in the profound communion we have with our deceased through Christ Jesus, in whom all are alive, and by whom all are connected. The feasts of All Saints and All Souls, as well as the various Memorial Masses that will take place in the next few weeks are reminders of this. Keep yourself posted of these upcoming celebrations. Taxes well, not quite, but our responsibility to keep our churches financially viable, not just to keep buildings open, heated and maintained, but also to fund the mission of the Gospel, is another topic that you will be hearing about. It seemed that, years ago, the complaint was that the Church talked too much about money. From my perspective, I think we don t remind people nearly enough that the parish, like a household, is only viable when one knows what income is coming in, so as to plan reasonable budgets, and live within one s means, while carrying out the mission of the household. So, a reminder of the importance of regular (weekly, that is) giving, at an amount that is adjusted over time given the rising cost of living, and adhered to, is vitally important. May God bless you over the coming week, and thank you for all you do in your service to the Gospel. Fr. 6 A FAMILY PERSPECTIVE from the Office of Family Life Education (A Hope Appeal Agency) Jesus was exasperated when he scolded: Why do you put me to the test? It is natural for children to test parents; this is how they learn and how we teach limits, rules and values. Be like Jesus in today s gospel; he was firm, honest and direct. What is the importance of the Old Testament for Christians? Christians venerate the Old Testament as the true word of God. All the books of the Old Testament are divinely inspired and retain a permanent value. They bear witness to the divine pedagogy of God s saving love. They are written, above all, to prepare for the coming of Christ the Savior of the universe. WISDOM OF THE SAINTS: We will either accuse ourselves or excuse ourselves. ~St. John Vianney 6
