2 Dear Parishioners and Visitors, Sadly, once again the tragedy of the sexual abuse of minors by members of the Roman Catholic clergy, and the gross mishandling of this evil by other members of the clergy and hierarchy, is in the forefront of our minds with the release of the Pennsylvania Grand Jury investigation spanning seven decades, bringing to light the scope of the problem over the past seventy years. While the Church s efforts following the reports coming out of the Boston Archdiocese in 2003 have produced policies, standards, and procedures for preventing this from ever happening again, and dealing swiftly with any new accusations and offenders, this latest report brings to light just how systematic and egregious this crime against God s people by their shepherds was. I can only say personally that it makes me sick. It makes me angry, and I personally cannot wrap my head around how this was allowed to exist unchecked and un-dealt with for so long. While not personally part of the problem, yet as a Catholic priest, I carry a sense of shame about me for what my other supposed brothers in the priesthood have done to those who should have received the greatest protection and care. This past week, Bishops everywhere including our own Bishop Cunningham, as well as our Holy Father Francis, have issued statements and sentiments of outrage as well as expressed the strongest possible words of sympathy and sorrow for the victims of these crimes, and all who are rightly scandalized by them. I know words fall short of actions, and problems don t just go away. They have to be dealt with. I can only speak personally in expressing my own sorrow and outrage, and reiterating to you my personal commitment to not only the protection of children and people of all ages from any form of abuse, but of trying to the best of my ability to live and promote the Gospel in its entirety, which is the surest remedy to this, and every social problem and sin that plagues the human race. May God help all men and women of goodwill, but especially those in positions of influence and authority, to never let evil go unchecked again, and to always practice what they teach and represent. UE Elementary School Volunteers Needed This is the 7th year we are asking parishioners to volunteer as Reading Tutors at AGM, CFJ, TJW & GFJ elementary schools. Those who have done this in the past have found it a very rewarding experience. Volunteers spend 1/2 to 1 1/2 hours one day a week at the school of there choice. There is also a need for Math Tutors to teach basic addition, subtraction, multiplication & division. 5 OUTREACH CORNER: Outreach Ministry OLGC FOOD PANTRY NEEDS: For The Pantry Cereal, Juice Fruit, Tuna, Pasta Sauce, Pasta, Soup, Peanut Butter & Jelly, Vegetables, Baked Beans, Potatoes, Mac & Cheese If you would like to donate coupons to help purchase items for food pantry. Place coupons in the plastic holder on the wall outside of the food pantry. If you don t use the inserts it is best to leave coupons intact and not clipped. Any help is appreciated. They will provide digital screening mammograms with 3D technology for women 35 years and older. OLGC Soup Kitchen: One of our Parish Family donates Eggs weekly to our OLGC Soup Kitchen participants.
