2 Dear Parishioners and Visitors, How did it come to be that we re just a few days away from Thanksgiving? Wasn t it just the Fourth of July? This year the Thanksgiving Day Mass for both parishes will be hosted at OLGC, at 9am on Thanksgiving Day. Come and begin that day with the Lord, and your parish family, giving thanks for all the blessings that God has bestowed upon us in His goodness!! The Book of Sirach says, A faithful friend is a sturdy shelter. Whoever finds one finds a treasure. Faithful friends are beyond price, and no amount can equal their worth. (Sirach 6: 14-15) This weekend, I welcome Fr. Christopher Ballard, my best friend, as our guest presider and homilist. He is currently the Pastor of Our Lady of Hope Parish, which is a new parish formed from the former parishes of Our Lady of Lourdes and St. James, on the south side of Syracuse. Why is he here? Well, we thought it would be fun to do a sanctuary exchange since we talk endlessly to each other about our respective parishes but never get to see what it is like to preside there for a weekend. So, while Fr. Chris is here this weekend, I will be at Our Lady of Hope as their guest presider and homilist. Please give him a warm welcome. A few things I can tell you about him. He grew up in the Syracuse Area, graduated from Baldwinsville (Baker) HS, attended Fordham University in the Bronx, went to St. Mary s Seminary in Baltimore, was ordained in 2010 and has served at St. James in Johnson City and Immaculate Conception in Fayetteville. He is fluent in Spanish and is also the owner of two cats. And don t press him for stories about me because I swore him to secrecy! Ha ha. I hope you enjoy having him here this weekend. 5 OUTREACH CORNER: Outreach Ministry OLGC FOOD PANTRY NEEDS: For The Pantry Peanut butter & Jelly potatoes canned or packaged, baked beans Many thanks to all of you who so generously donate food on a regular basis. The needy clients who make use of our Pantry are often overwhelmed with gratitude and moved to tears. Our shelves are again low, so please continue your compassionate generosity. God Bless you! PLEASE! Can you help? We are looking for some people in the parish who would be willing to bring Communion to those who are in nursing homes or who live at home and are unable to attend Mass. There is a need for both women and men for this important ministry. Please call the rectory at or Terri at outreach-olgc@stny.rr.com to help out. This is a critical need as we head into the winter months and people cannot get to church. OLGC Soup Kitchen: We have several teams in need of new volunteers. If interested in volunteering call the Rectory or kbabicek@syrdio.org. Thank you. Lourdes Mobile Mammography will be coming to OLGC on Dec 21 st from 3pm-7pm. To schedule an appointment and preregister, please call: Lourdes Hospital Central Scheduling: You do not need a physician s order if it has been over one year since your last screening mammogram, scheduled appointments take approximately 15 minutes, walk-ons welcome, your results will be sent directly to your health care provider. NYS residents are eligible to receive free breast cancer screenings if you do not have insurance. OLGC Thanksgiving Baskets: Thank you to everyone who donated to the Thanksgiving Baskets. Your generosity is truly appreciated by all. Volunteers are needed to help on 11/19 at 1:00 PM to unload and organize all the perishables as well as the non-perishables to fill 60 bags. With many hands this should only take about 1-1 1/2 hours. We also need a few adults to help in the evening at 3:45 to help distribute the bags. If you are able to help please contact Karen at kbabicek@syrdio.org Anything you can do will be appreciated. OLGC Christmas Baskets will be at each OLGC entrance beginning Thanksgiving Day. As in the past we will be providing 135 families with a Christmas dinner this year. If you would like us to do your shopping for you please place your donation in an envelope and put it in the weekly collection at Mass marked "OLGC Christmas Bag Donation" or turn your donation into the OLGC Rectory. Save the Date: OLGC Christmas Caroling with OPWDD will be on 12/13 at 6:30pm in the OLGC Church. We have a great time singing. Please consider joining us this year all are invited. 5 YOUTH CORNER All events open to OLGC & St. Ambrose Students Poinsettia & Wreath sales benefitting youth attending NCYC was a great success! The Poinsettias and Wreaths will be delivered to OLGC on Friday, December 7th in the Father Hobbs Room and will be available for pickup after each Mass that weekend. Please have payment at time of pickup. Make checks out to OLGC. Thank you to all who ordered! Southern Tier Mobilepack - Feed My Starving Children - The OLGC team of packers did an amazing job!! We packed 24 boxes out of the 79 total for that shift!! A breakdown of how much each box of food contains is - 36 food packs per box, EACH food pack makes 6 meals! The total of 79 boxes equals - 17,064 meals which will feed 46 children 1 meal a day for a year!!! Thank you to the youth and families that participated. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Please Note OLGC ADVENT WREATH KITS will be on sale this Sunday, November 18th after all Masses at the Grippen St., entrance for $7.00. This includes everything you need, including candles, to make a live Advent wreath using your own greens. Bring your completed wreath to church the first Sunday of Advent for a blessing and bring it back home after Mass. It s a great family activity! Showers of Hope: If you are interested in helping out with Showers of Hope, St. Patrick's in Binghamton will continue to supply showers throughout the winter on Thursdays 11:30 am-1:30 pm.
