2 Dear Parishioners and Visitors, I hope summer is going well for all. This week brings us the first Holy Day of the new parish linkage with the Feast of the Assumption of Mary falling on Tuesday of this week. The new Holy Day schedule nicely fits with what both parishes were already doing, and will be the "regular" Holy Day schedule for the two parishes for the foreseeable future. (See the Weekly Liturgical Schedule for times.) In the Second Vatican Council's document on the Church, Lumen Gentium, the Church is rightly called "a mystery," not in the sense of mystery crime thriller, but in the religious sense, such that whenever Divinity and humanity combine to create one new thing, the relationship of God to Man is complex, outside the normal comprehension of our minds, and in short: mysterious. To better understand such mysteries, we need models, or images, that help us get there. And so, Mary the mother of Jesus, is rightly named one of those models or images of the Church. Mary, like us, was human, but unlike us, was totally dedicated to the will of God. She allowed the in-dwelling to being forth Christ in her. We too are called to incarnate Christ in the world by our union with God through the Holy Spirit. And Mary, like us someday, experienced the resurrection. She was assumed body and spirit into Heaven. We await the resurrection on the Last Day, but nonetheless we too will share in the life that is Mary's, because we too have said yes, be it done to me according to your will, O God. And that hope is what we will celebrate this week as we commemorate Mary's glorious Assumption. Fr. Michael THE SACRAMENTS Reconciliation: At St. Ambrose Saturday: 2:30-3:30 pm or by appointment. UE Elementary School Volunteers Needed: This is the 6th year we are asking parishioners to volunteer as Reading Tutors at AGM, CFJ, TJW & GFJ elementary schools. Those who have done this in the past have found it a very rewarding experience. Volunteers spend 1/2 to 1 1/2 hours one day a week at the school of their choice. There is also a need for Math Tutors to teach basic addition, subtraction, multiplication & division. The Ministries of the Southern Tier Showers of Hope Project Needs Volunteers: * We will be selling 50/50 Raffle Tickets the weekend of August 26 & 27 at both OLGC & St. Ambrose to help raise money for the Showers of Hope project. Raffle tickets sponsored by the Ladies Ancient Order of Hibernians, drawing on Friday 9/16 at the 14th Annual Half- Way to St. Patrick s Day Hooley. You do not need to be present to win. Tickets are $2, half goes to the winner and half to the Showers of Hope * To help out on Mondays 3-4 pm at the American Legion on Main St. in Binghamton to spread the word regarding the Showers of Hope.
