Slava Isusu Chrystu! With Easter only about a week away, I hope that everyone is preparing for the Resurrection of our Lord and making their Easter confession. I pray that everyone has a wonderful Easter and also for the university students who will shortly begin their exams. Once again, I would like to begin with thanks to a number of dedicated people. First of all, from March 9-10, we had our Lenten Fast-a-thon at the Chancery. Sister Terry Ann Slota, SSMI, spoke dynamically about the history of our church and challenged us to think about what makes us Ukrainian Catholic. She also took the time to entertain us with stories of her mission work in Europe. From there the participants moved on to an energetic games session followed by an evening movie and lights out. The next morning, they were risen to a bible puzzle exercise and a chancery scavenger hunt, followed by the Movie Chocolat and a Lenten reflection on it. The event ended with a Divine Liturgy and homily by Fr. Richard Soo, SJ and a well-received lunch. Thanks to all who participated! The same day, many of the very same group of people had a couple of hours to wash up and attend the Immaculate Heart of "Set a good example and you won t have to set many rules." Mama Ziglar UCY/UCYA Winnipeg Mary School Fundraising Dinner. In the end, it seemed as though the fasting and prayer of the previous night paid off as the UCY were the winners of a $200 prize! Thanks to those who attended and represented the youth well despite how tired they may have been! Looking ahead, on Sunday April 1 the Redemptorist Youth Vocation Ministry office will be holding their annual Palm Sunday retreat at St. Andrew s parish beginning at 3:00 pm. The presenter will be Sister Carmella Lukey, SSMI who will speak on iconography. This will be followed by a potluck supper and will be the last meeting of the Young Adults in Action Group for the year. Thanks to Michelle Thiessen for putting on a successful first year of the program and we look forward to next year! We will be selling Show & Save books again as a fundraiser for the youth who are going to Australia for World Youth Day The cost per book is $15 and we get $5 from every sale. Please support this worthy cause! If you would like to purchase a book or A Recently Spotted Bumper Sticker: C'mon over and bring the kids -- God. join in the selling of the books please call They will be on sale until mid May only! On Sunday, May 6, the movie club will resume at the Chancery at 2:30 pm with the movie Nanny McPhee. This is an opportunity for our young people to spend some time watching a newer movie in a scriptural context and join in some fellowship at the same time. The final one of the year will again be an outdoor showing on June 16, with the location and movie title to be announced. Keep watching for details. Finally, don t forget that the Ukrainian Park Camper and Counselor Reunion is coming up from August We have already been getting several calls from interested people who attended the park several years ago and have provided excellent archival information and photographs. If you are, or if you know of someone who has some connection to the children s camp, then you won t want to miss out on this weekend. That s all for now, see you after Easter! Yours in Christ, Tamara Lisowski April 2007 "We understand why children are afraid of darkness, but why are men afraid of light?" Plato

2 Check out the new youth & young adult web page: Page 2 What s Up with Mpwf Christ's Love We were the only family with children in the restaurant. I sat Erik in a high chair and noticed everyone was quietly sitting and talking. By Anonymous Posted February 4, 2005 Suddenly, Little Erik squealed with glee and said, "Hi." He pounded his fat baby hands on the high chair tray. His eyes were crinkled in laughter and his mouth was bared in a toothless grin, as he wriggled and giggled with merriment. I looked around and saw the source of his merriment. It was a man whose pants were baggy with a zipper at half-mast and his toes poked out of would-be shoes. His shirt was dirty and his hair was uncombed and unwashed. His whiskers were too short to be called a beard and his nose was so varicose it looked like a road map. We were too far from him to smell, but I was sure he smelled. His hands waved and flapped on loose wrists. "Hi there, baby; Hi there, big boy. I see ya, buster," the man said to Erik. My husband and I exchanged looks, "What do we do?" Erik continued to laugh and answer, "Hi." Everyone in the restaurant noticed and looked at us and then at the man. The old geezer was creating a nuisance with my beautiful baby. Our meal came and the man began shouting from across the room, "Do ya patty cake? Do you know peek-a-boo? Hey, look, he knows peek-a-boo." Nobody thought the old man was cute. He was obviously drunk. My husband and I were embarrassed. We ate in silence; all except for Erik, who was running through his repertoire for the admiring skid row bum, who in turn, reciprocated with his cute comments. We finally got through the meal and headed for the door. My husband went to pay the check and told me to meet him in the parking lot. The old man sat poised between me and the door. "Lord, just let me out of here before he speaks to me or Erik," I prayed. As I drew closer to the man, I turned my back trying to sidestep him and avoid any air he might be breathing. As I did, Erik leaned over my arm, reaching with both arms in a baby's "pick-meup" position. Before I could stop him, Erik had propelled himself from my arms to the man's. Suddenly a very old smelly man and a very young baby consummated their love and kinship. Erik in an act of total trust, love, and submission laid his tiny head upon the man's ragged shoulder. The man's eyes closed, and I saw tears hover beneath his lashes. His aged hands full of grime, pain, Ukrainian Catholic Youth and Young Adult Taken from ~ and hard labor, cradled my baby's bottom and stroked his back. No two beings have ever loved so deeply for so short a time. I stood awestruck. The old man rocked and cradled Erik in his arms and his eyes opened and set squarely on mine. He said in a firm commanding voice, "You take care of this baby." Somehow I managed, "I will," from a throat that contained a stone. He pried Erik from his chest, lovingly and longingly, as though he were in pain. I received my baby, and the man said, "God bless you, ma'am, you've given me my Christmas gift." I said nothing more than a muttered thanks. With Erik in my arms, I ran for the car. My husband was wondering why I was crying and holding Erik so tightly, and why I was saying, "My God, my God, forgive me." I had just witnessed Christ's love shown through the innocence of a tiny child who saw no sin, who made no judgment; a child who saw a soul, and a mother who saw a suit of clothes. I was a Christian who was blind, holding a child who was not. I felt it was God asking, "Are you willing to share your son for a moment?" when He shared His for all eternity. The ragged old man, unwittingly, had reminded me, "To enter the Kingdom of God, we must become as little children."

3 Page 3 Word Fun ~ Easter Sunday Word Search Puzzle The words in the following puzzle are from part of Matthew 28:1-10 (see below), the story of the Crucifixion. The clues have the letters of the answer scrambled. Unscramble them and place them in the puzzle. Early on Sunday morning, as the new day was dawning, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary went out to see the tomb. Suddenly there was a great earthquake, because an angel of the Lord came down from heaven and rolled aside the stone and sat on it. His face shone like lightning, and his clothing was as white as snow. The guards shook with fear when they saw him, and they fell into a dead faint. Then the angel spoke to the women. "Don't be afraid!" he said. "I know you are looking for Jesus, who was crucified. He isn't here! He has been raised from the dead, just as he said would happen. Come, see where his body was lying. And now, go quickly and tell his disciples he has been raised from the dead, and he is going ahead of you to Galilee. You will see him there. Remember, I have told you." The women ran quickly from the tomb. They were very frightened but also filled with great joy, and they rushed to find the disciples to give them the angel's message. And as they went, Jesus met them. "Greetings!" he said. And they ran to him, held his feet, and worshiped him. Then Jesus said to them, "Don't be afraid! Go tell my brothers to leave for Galilee, and they will see me there." Copyright Gospel Communications International, Inc -

4 Page 4 Ukrainian Catholic Youth and Young Adult News ROME, FEB. 28, 2006 (Zenit.org).- Answered by Father Edward McNamara, professor of liturgy at the Regina Apostolorum university. Q: What determines what day Lent begins? A: The short answer to your question is that the beginning of Lent depends on the date of Easter. Easter follows a lunar, rather than a solar, calendar and is celebrated on the Sunday that follows the first full moon after March 21, the vernal (spring) equinox. Therefore Easter cannot fall earlier than March 22 or later than April 25. All the other movable celebrations in the Church calendar ultimately depend on the date of Easter. Most of the Eastern Churches follow the same basic principles but often celebrate Easter on a date different from Catholics and other Western Christians because they continue to follow the calendar of Julius Caesar without the corrections incorporated by Pope Gregory XIII in Julius Caesar s calendar calculated the year as 365 days and 6 hours and thus was about 11 minutes and 9 seconds more than the sun s actual course. Although tiny, this excess puts the calendar off by a day, more or less, every 128 years. Thus, the Council of Nicaea already found it necessary to regress the date of the spring equinox to March 21 instead of the original date of March 25. By the time of Pope Gregory XIII the difference had grown so much that the spring equinox occurred on March 11. In 1581 with the bull "Inter Gravissimas" Pope Gregory promulgated a widespread reform which, among other things, re-established the spring equinox on March 21 by eliminating 10 days from October Coincidence would have it that St. Teresa of Avila died on that very night of Oct The error of Julius Caesar's calendar was corrected by deciding that the turn of the century always a leap year in the Julian calendar would be so only when the year could be divided by 400, that is 1600, , etc., whereas there would be no leap year in the others. Most Catholic countries, and even some Protestant ones, accepted the reform almost immediately. Some countries, such as England, held off accepting the papal reform until 1752 while Russia did not adopt it until after the Communist takeover in The calculation is still not perfect as there is still a difference of 24 seconds between the legal and the solar calendar. However, 3,500 years will have to pass before another day is added. Getting back to Lent. This season comprises 40 days before Easter without counting Sundays which, even though they are called "Sundays of Lent," are not days of penance. Church tradition has always excluded fasting and penance on a Sunday. The tradition of a fast in preparation for Easter goes back to the late third century but it varied in duration. The tradition of a 40-day fast was established in Rome between 354 and 384, although it began after the first Sunday. As this period was also deemed suitable for the final preparation of candidates for baptism, the baptismal scrutinies were incorporated with the rites of this season. Scrutinies are communal prayers celebrated around the elect to strengthen them to overcome the power of sin in their lives and to grow in virtue. Later, at the start of the sixth century, the beginning of Lent was moved up to Ash Wednesday in order to guarantee 40 days of effective fasting. REQUESTS & SUBMISSIONS ~ youth@archeparchy.ca

5 Volume 5, Issue 5 Page 5 Too Many Boiled Easter Eggs? The 3 of the 10 Best Things To Do With Leftover Easter Eggs By Cheri Sicard Okay. Easter is over. A good time was had by all. There were chocolates and grand style feasting, and of course, Easter Eggs. Lots and lots of Easter Eggs. So many Easter Eggs. Never have you and your family turned out such masterpieces of Easter art. You just couldn't stop! But what are you left with after the bunny goes home? A couple of extra pounds from all the chocolate, a pile of brightly colored egg shells and lots and lots of hard boiled eggs. WHAT ARE YOU GOING TO DO WITH ALL THOSE EGGS? We love coloring eggs as much as anyone. But we HATE wasting food. What follows is a list of three of the ten fabulous things to make with leftover eggs. Oh, by the way, you don't have to wait till Easter to enjoy these recipes. Cobb Salad 3-4 C Romaine lettuce, shredded 2 med ripe tomatoes, diced 1 large avocado, diced 4 slices bacon 3 T blue cheese, crumbled 1 C cooked turkey or chicken breast, diced 2 hard boiled eggs 2 T diced olives (optional) Blue Cheese Dressing (or dressing of choice) Serves 2 Place shredded lettuce in a bowl and arrange remaining ingredients in rows on top. Serve with dressing on the side. Scalloped Eggs 8 hard boiled eggs about 3/4 C milk, half & half or cream about 3/4 C seasoned breadcrumbs about 2 T butter salt and pepper to taste Optional: 4 slices crumbled cooked bacon Serves 4-8 Pre-heat oven to 350 F. Grease an 8" square glass baking dish and cover bottom with a layer of crumbs. Place a layer of sliced hard boiled eggs, then sprinkle with crumbled bacon if using, dot with a few bits of butter, then repeat this layer process, finishing with a layer of buttered crumbs. Pour cream, milk or half and half over the whole dish until it comes about halfway up the side of the dish. Place in oven until heated and browned, about 4-6 minutes. This is an old fashioned recipe that was a favorite in your grandmother's (or great grandmother's depending on your age) day. The ingredient amounts are somewhat vague because it depends on the size of your baking dish, as you'll see in the directions. Beet Pickled Eggs 12 hard boiled eggs, peeled 1 1/2 C cider vinegar 1 C beet juice 8-10 whole peppercorns 3 whole cloves 3-4 cloves garlic 1 bay leaf 1 T sugar 1/2 tsp. salt 1/8 tsp. ground allspice 2 sprigs fresh dill Makes 1 Dozen Pickled Eggs How To Boil Perfect Easter Eggs Note from Cheri: Have you ever eaten Easter Eggs that are so dry their yolks look almost green? Well Sam I Am had it right when he said he didn't like green eggs (we won't even talk about green ham). Perfect boiled eggs have fluffy, yellow yolks. Here's how to get perfect results every time, so your eggs will taste as good as they look. Put eggs in a large pot, in a single layer and cover with COLD water. Turn on the heat under the eggs and as soon as they come to a full boil, remove them from the heat and let them sit in the hot water for about minutes. Peel boiled eggs using a teaspoon instead of your fingers! It is much easier and cleaner! Bang the bottom of the egg on a tabletop or counter to start it. After, run the peeled egg under cold water to remove any tiny egg shells that will not come off. How Fresh Are Your Eggs? To make sure your eggs are fresh, put raw egg in a glass of water. If it lays on the bottom, it's fresh. If it is on the bottom, but the small end is up, it's still fine. If it is floating in the middle, but not on top, it should be safe, but not very fresh. If it floats, throw it away, it's a rotten egg. Pack peeled eggs in a clean one quart jar. Combine remaining ingredients, except dill in a saucepan and bring to a boil. Reduce heat and simmer for 3-5 minutes. Pour hot mixture over eggs, add dill and cover tightly. Refrigerate for at least 2 days before serving. Will keep for about 2 weeks in the refrigerator.

(John 8:32) "Freedom is not the ability to do anything we want, whenever we want. Rather, freedom is the ability to live responsibly the truth of our relationship with God and one another." --Pope John Paul II, St. Louis, Missouri Think About That That's not what society would have us believe. All the messages we get from society tell us that freedom is your opportunity to do whatever you want no matter what. Well, that's not what freedom means for Christians. For us, freedom is something that comes from being in relationship with God. In that relationship we are freed to live lives of truth and lives that contribute to helping others. Take Action Set yourself free today. Do a kind act for someone at home, school, or work. After doing that kind act, pay attention to how you feel. That feeling is what true freedom feels like. Say A Prayer Lord, help me to do something kind for someone else today. In that act, help me to know what freedom really means. Thank you for the gift of freedom you have given me. Did You Know? 9 Volume 5, Issue 5 Page 9 Youth Workers & Parents Our Lives Are Linked ~ by Frederick Buechner, The Hungering Dark, 1969 The remarkable Presbyterian preacher/novelist Frederick Buechner compared humanity to an enormous spider web: "if you touch it anywhere, you set the whole thing trembling...as we move around this world and as we act with kindness, perhaps, or with indifference, or with hostility, toward the people we meet, we too are setting the great spider web a-tremble. The life that I touch for good or ill will touch another life, and that in turn another, until who knows where the trembling stops or in what far place and time my touch will be felt. Our lives are linked. No man is an island." Stretching One s Soul ~ R. Lee Sharpe, Treasury of Inspiration, p. 20 R. Lee Sharpe related, "One spring day when I was just a kid, my father called me to go with him to Trussell s blacksmith shop. He had left a rake and a hoe to be repaired. And there they were ready, fixed like new. Father handed over a silver dollar for the repairing. But Mr. Trussell refused to take it. No, he said, there s no charge for that little job. "But father insisted that he take payment. "If I live to be a thousand years," said Sharpe, "I ll never forget that old blacksmith s reply. Sid, he said to my father, can t you let an old man do something now and then just to stretch his soul? " It s the old law. The giver receives more than the receiver gets. Bread cast upon the waters comes back a thousand-fold. One who stretches his soul into deeds of love and kindness, unfailingly reaps a just reward.
