3 Dear Friends, It is the harvest season, although to be correct the harvest is nearly all gathered in as I write. It seems to me that the harvest is becoming earlier each year, or perhaps it s a sign of my age that I am just used to the time scale of an earlier age. Clergy will now find themselves ploughing the fields and scattering the seeds for quite a few weeks. The harvest itself is a sign of God s presence amongst us, and our harvest thanksgiving services are a recognition of his presence. So as harvest services are held in churches, schools, pubs, halls, it is as though the ark of the presence of God is carried into our midst, for we are acknowledging the presence and reality of God. It is God s gifts which we remember at this time. And wherever we hold our harvest services we have tokens of those gifts all around us. I remember conducting a harvest festival in a local pub where we were surrounded by gifts of produce, and I dared not move from the corner of the bar in which I had been placed for fear of knocking down all the wonderful gifts, which were going to be given away in the village. The gifts remind us of our daily bread, and all the good things to eat which go with it. Through the beauty and colour of the flowers, we are reminded of the gifts by which our spirit is sustained. Let the gifts of our harvest remind us of the things which we take so often for granted, the comforts we enjoy, the hard work that other people do, especially the farmers, the faithfulness of those who supply our needs. Our harvest thanksgiving shows that these things are gifts not rights, as we sometimes suppose. The harvest decorations speak of graciousness in the world as well as hard commerce. Above all they point to the gifts of a gracious God. If we recognize the presence of God amongst us then we also have to recognize his claims upon us. We do not own the world and its gifts. We are told that we are stewards of it. We are to develop the world without exploiting it. We must do all we can to ensure that the harvests of this world are properly shared around. And that means not just sharing them in our own village, for neighbour means so much more than those in close proximity to us. All starving people are our responsibility, to look after them for God s sake. If we really want to say thank you to God for his goodness and bounty to us, symbolized by the harvest, then perhaps we could make a donation (the amount is up to you) to one of the agencies for famine relief and development in poorer countries. So at this harvest time let us once more come together and sing the well-loved hymns and rejoice in God s goodness to us, and give thanks that he has once more honoured the ancient promise that while earth remaineth, seedtime and harvest, and cold and heat, and summer and winter, and day and night, shall not cease. May God bless you. Your Priest and Friend, Edward Ward 3

I simply cannot understand why anyone would inflict such mindless acts of violence on anyone. Who would deliberately cause such nuisance to the residents who have to clean it all up, let alone endure the distress of being targeted in this fashion? The letter reads I am assuming it is a juvenile act and wonder if there are any parents short of eggs, or if residents who leave eggs out for sale and find them gone but no money left? I hope that those who were responsible for this senseless vandalism are duly shamefaced and that it won t be repeated in our otherwise friendly village. The next edition of the Parish Magazine and Village News will cover the month of November 2015 and the deadline for contributions is Sunday, 4 th October. Please deliver your contributions in good time to me at the address on the inside front cover or you can them to me at sarajanetaylor@yahoo.co.uk. I m always delighted to receive your photos too (preferably by ), especially ones of people, places and events which take place in and around our villages. Don t forget that you can also read this magazine online on both the village and church websites (addresses on the front cover). MOBILE LIBRARY The next visits of the Mobile Library to Edgmond will be on Thursday October 1 st and Thursday October 22 nd. The Library Van usually parks in High Street just below the Village Shop. We are very fortunate that we still have such a service at a time when Councils are being forced to cut back all their services, and I do urge villagers to make use of it. If you want a particular book they will order it for you. 7

11 KEN BRASSINGTON Ken was born in Staffordshire and lived and worked on the family farm at Wood Eaton. He met Vera who was living in Bradley and they were married at Bradley Church in November However just before they were married Ken s family moved to Marsh farm in Edgmond and then, soon after moving, Ken s mother died and Vera had to look after his father. Ken worked hard on the farm and when it was no longer viable sold up and went to work at Audco. Ken and Vera lived for many years at Field View on the Shrewsbury Road. Their daughter Ann arrived in Ken enjoyed playing cricket for the Edgmond village team, but regardless of what he was doing at the time, bowling, batting, fielding - when it was milking time, Ken walked off the pitch to attend to the milking at the farm. He also played darts for the Audco team and The Lion darts and dominoes teams. Both Ken and Vera were keen whist players and would travel to all places and in all sorts of weather to get to Whist Drives. Later they moved to the bungalow in Newport Road and continued to enjoy village life. When Ken was struck down with Guilain-Barré Syndrome, Vera went every day to visit him in Cannock Hospital. Eventually Ken recovered and returned home. But the last few years of their life wasn t easy for either of them as their health deteriorated. Eventually they had to go into a Care Home. Unfortunately Vera died in March 2012 and Ken continued to live in the Beaumaris Care Home. Ken was always a quiet, gentle man who didn t like a lot of fuss. He was happiest with a good book, completing a crossword or watching sport on the television. We offer to Ann and to Mark, and to all the family our love and deepest sympathy at this sad time. BILL BURRELL St Peter s Church was full of family, friends, ex-colleagues and neighbours who came to pay their respects to Bill Burrell, who died in June. Bill was born in Milford Haven, Pembrokeshire in He joined the RAF as soon as he was old enough and he used to say that his interest in flying was prompted by watching the Sunderland Flying Boats using Milford Haven for practice. He was sent to Queens University, Belfast for the Officer Training Course and then to Africa where he gained his wings. He spent his service as a pilot flying Spitfires. His interest in flying stayed with him all his life, and one of his greatest pleasures was a glider flight at the Midlands Gliding Club as his 80 th birthday present. On demobilisation in 1947 he went to the University College of Wales, Aberystwyth for 4 years, gaining an Honours Degree in Agricultural Botany. It was while he was 11

12 waiting at Aberystwyth railway station that he was introduced to a young female student, whom he was eventually to marry. He came to Harper Adams in 1952 on being appointed regional Crops Variety Officer with the National Institute of Agricultural Botany which was based there. His job involved growing field plots of new varieties and measuring their potential for use in agriculture. Bill remained with NIAB for all his working life, later becoming Regional Manager when NIAB s activities expanded in the 1970 s. Bill and Mair were married in 1954 and had their house built in Longwithy lane where they both lived for the rest of their lives. In 1957 their son John was born but sadly did not survive. Mair was on dialysis for many years; Bill became Mair s renal nurse and had to manage her six hour dialysis sessions three times a week. Eventually Mair had a successful kidney transplant (one of the first), which lasted until her death in Every year on the Sunday nearest to Mair s operation, Bill and Mair asked that at the service thanks be given for Mair s health and also prayers of remembrance be offered for the kidney donor s family. Bill had been Churchwarden for many years at St Peter s and he and Mair were regular attenders at the early morning Communion service. Bill was also well known for his expert knowledge of the weather and for 33 years he was responsible for the daily recording of the weather statistics for the Met Office. On January 10 th 1982 he recorded the lowest night time temperature ever recorded in England - a record which still stands today. On his retirement he was presented with a barograph by the Met Office in appreciation of all his hard work. Unfortunately Bill s health problems began to take their toll on him. But being the independent person he was, he was determined not to leave his house and go into care. And with the help and support of two very good friends (John and Lynda) he managed to achieve this. He retained his mental alertness and sense of humour until the heart attack from which he died. We offer our deepest sympathy to his nieces and nephews and all his family at this time. MEMORIES OF BILL BURRELL BY CHRISTINE NEATE I got to know Bill when I used to walk my dog up Longwithy Lane; he was either in his garden or walking his dog in the lane and we would stop and chat. He was a very interesting, knowledgeable, entertaining and witty man and I became very fond of him. I won t forget him telling me some naughty RAF slang words which I won t repeat here! and his association with the BBC Midlands Today weather presenter Shefali Oza who came to interview him about England s lowest ever temperature recorded in Edgmond. 12

13 I shall think of him often and always when I see an unusual cloud formation The clouds paint a tapestry across the sky he once told me - and when I see a dachshund dog the two will always be synonymous with Bill. I was on holiday when I heard Bill had passed away. A couple of days later in Norwich Cathedral I lit a candle for him and found this poem in the cathedral shop: Fond Farewell Miss me, but let me go When I come to the end of the road And the sun has set for me I want no tears in a gloom filled room Why cry for a soul set free? Miss me a little but not too long And not with your head bowed low Remember the love that we once shared Miss me, but let me go For this is a journey We all must take and each must go alone It is all part of God s great plan A step on the road to home. He was a very special man who bore his pain with grace and humour. I ll miss you Bill God bless. 15 PC Lee Thomas has kindly sent us the following report in place of the usual Parish Warden s report this month: REPORT FROM NEWPORT SAFER NEIGHBOURHOODS TEAM Donnington Police Station, Wellington Road, Donnington, Telford TF2 8AE In early July police were notified that an unknown male had attended a home in the village occupied by an elderly lady and had offered to carry out hedge cutting for which she paid a sum of money and the male then left without carrying out the works he had been paid for. We would encourage everyone to make sure vulnerable family members and neighbours are made aware that these sorts of incidents do occasionally happen within our area and that people should never hand over money to strangers who come knocking unannounced. Most reputable tradespeople would not expect to be paid in full until the works had been carried out and to the satisfaction of the customer. We also received several reports during mid July of youths causing a nuisance throwing wet tissue paper and soft fruit at a number of properties along Newport Road, High Street and Chetwynd Road areas over a number of nights. Following a number of enquiries by ourselves and information received from other residents, the three children involved were all identified and spoken to in the presence of their parents. All subsequently received warning letters from police regarding their future conduct and we're pleased to say there have been no further incidents reported. There have been no recorded crimes in Edgmond during the month of August, however adjacent to the area we have received reports of an attempted theft of a tractor and also sheep from fields near Calvington and Caynton plus thefts of industrial type strimmers and saws from outbuildings at properties near Sambrook. This gives us the ideal opportunity to remind people about rural security and ensuring that items of value are, where possible, security marked, perhaps with ultraviolet markers or Smartwater type security systems. West Mercia Police now have a Rural Crime Team working out of Malinsgate Police Station in Telford, supporting our team working here in the Newport and outlying rural areas. They are able to offer a wide range of rural security advice and support and are currently working their way around the large rural areas around Telford and Newport visiting farms and outlying properties directly. Hopefully a more structured RuralWatch scheme will be forthcoming in the short term. Recently, residents in both Edgmond and Tibberton have expressed concerns regarding groups of cyclists riding through villages causing safety concerns. There have been a couple of reports of near misses including ones where a bus and large van have had to take evasive action to avoid collisions. We should remember though that cycles have an equal right to use roads as motorised vehicles but that both drivers and cyclists should be considerate of each other as well as pedestrians who may be in the carriageway due to the lack of pavements. Looking forward into the autumn, as everyone living in our villages will no doubt be aware, there will be increased activity near farms as field work continues. Please be mindful of slow moving machinery on country lanes and also of mud on the carriageways as vehicles move from field to field. Farm workers will be fully aware of their responsibility to clear mud off the road as soon as possible but this may not be immediately after a vehicle has caused the deposits so please do drive with care. 16 News & Reports from Edgmond Parish Council You may have heard about Telford and Wrekin Council s Local Plan and how it will set out the priorities and policies for development in Telford and Wrekin in relation to housing, green space, shops, businesses, transport and community facilities including where development could go until The Council s Cabinet approved this Local Plan for consultation starting on 3 rd August 2015 and ending at 5 pm on Friday 25 th September The Council will not be able to consider any comments received after this deadline, which means that (depending on when you receive this magazine) the consultation period will probably have closed by the time you read this. 17 OPERATION CHRISTMAS CHILD This is run by the Christian relief and development organisation 'Samaritan's Purse' and we thought that people from our villages and St Peter's Church might like to be involved. Suitable small Christmas gifts for the chosen age of child (male or female) are collected and placed in a Christmas paper covered shoebox. These filled boxes can be brought to and then will be collected from St Peter's Church. They are taken to a central collecting point (Telford) and will eventually be taken overseas where they are most needed. At the moment, the collection date for boxes from Church is the end of October. If you are interested but hate the thought of covering your box with Christmas paper (it is fiddly) please ring Pauline on she has boxes already covered and charges 50p for them. She then uses the money collected for more gifts for more boxes! Leaflets with advice and suggestions for suitable gifts will be found in St Peter s Church - we can always ask for more! By the time this is in print they will have almost completed their first half term at school. We hope that Jacob, Missy, Lola, Oliver, Arianna, Ciaran, Keira, Sophie, Darcey, George, Daisy-Mae, Lizzie have a wonderful learning journey at St Lawrence and enjoy their time with us, as well as forming experiences and memories that will last a lifetime. We also welcome Mrs Moore, as our class 1 teacher. Mrs Moore visited the reception children at nursery at the end of last term, and was also there for the transition days, so there were familiar faces for everyone when they started. This term, class 1 are focusing on amazing me, which will then lead into toys! Class 2 are studying the Romans, and have had a field trip to Chester, where they were guided round the town by a Roman. Class 3 are studying monarchs. As we always miss our Saint s Day, as it is in August and therefore always in the summer holidays, this year we celebrated St Lawrence's day in September, so that we could learn all about our Saint. We celebrated this on the first Friday back in school, and learnt all about St Lawrence, who is the patron saint of chefs. St Lawrence also is well known for referring to the poor and needy in his parish as the "Treasures of the Church" and we therefore celebrated the children being the 20

21 treasures of our school. The whole school attended the Jackfield tile museum to make a tile about themselves, celebrating something they are good at or a hobby they do, and when the tiles have been fired, they will form part of a large wall hanging in school to show the uniqueness of each of our children. Finally this half term we have our usual Harvest Festival celebrations in church. It is always a treat to see the harvest celebrations and the first time for our reception parents to experience their child's first big event in school - something definitely to be remembered! Helen Ashby Governor, St Lawrence School The following article comments on the Letter to the Citizens of the United States of America from HM Queen Elizabeth II which appeared on page 23 of the August/September magazine: Please remember that the whole of the USA and Hawaii too (discovered by Captain Cook in 1778, and named the Sandwich Islands after his expedition sponsor the Earl of Sandwich - the only USA State still to fly the Union Jack as part of its State flag) were all British until inept politicians lost it all to us. A lesson in history? Virginia was named after Queen Elizabeth the First and New York was named after the Duke of York. Perhaps July 4 th could be replaced by the Queen s Birthday? Or Empire Day? Many of our current newsreaders and presenters seem to have developed a language barely understandable with so many missed syllables. Room for improvement? (See Queen s English). So what was wrong with the Imperial measurement system? The Americans got to the moon using it. We used it for 1,000 years. The railways of the world use it. Metric was foisted upon us by the EU, remember. The first industries to convert were farming (acres into hectares) and brick making neither of which we have ever exported. It just ensures nothing fits anymore. I note my brother s house in Denmark has BSP pipe fittings. B&Q sell doors of 762 mm wide. Just how metric is that? Most people are right handed, so one s sword was carried on the left hip, for which reason you always mount a horse from the left, - and being right handed we are also left-footed. Try mounting a horse from the wrong side. A gentleman s coat buttons are to the right, so as not to foul when drawing one s sword. Attacking your opponent would mean you need to be on the left side of the road. Castles have right-hand spiral staircases to make it difficult for an attacking swordsman to fight uphill with the centre column obstructing the use of the sword. Napoleon, an early EU promoter, discovered that refugees fleeing in front of his army stayed on the left so he ordered his troops to use the right side of the road. 21

22 Our petrol (or gasoline) is actually a lot cheaper then bottled water, the difference is made up by heavy taxation, - and VAT on top of what is mainly tax anyway. The Americans do play football but not as we know it. I do however remember an American team trying to play cricket. Just picture a giant 6 ft 6 in American Air Force policeman, legs apart swinging a cricket bat single handed baseball style. It has taken me a long time to find what soda is.
