3 Dear Friends, Richard, our son (the ruthless one in the family - no sentiment governs his decisions) was clearing out the attic for us in view of our impending move. He handed me a cardboard box containing all my notes and essays from university days, with the instruction to go through it and decide what to throw away. As I went through them I suddenly thought: what was I doing keeping all this paper? No one in the family was even slightly interested in theology and anyway these papers were now 40 years out of date. So I tore most of them up. When I was speaking to my Spiritual Director about all this he asked me how it made me feel. And I replied that it made me feel quite good. And he explained that was good because I was learning to let go of the past, and with retirement approaching it was something I had to learn to do to let go of the past. But the problem is: what to get rid of? It is easy to let go of the past if it is paper, but what about that first toy you remember buying for your child? Or the ornament they made for you, or bought for you? Or do you keep the object that came from your parents house? All these things are full of special memories. It s not so easy letting go of the past. And then he said the next question to ask myself was: what blessings will God send in the future? Who can tell what the future will hold; we will just have to deal with it as it comes along and see if we can discern God s will. I look forward to enjoying things I haven t been able to do for the past 26 years, such as having a breakfast on a Sunday morning; not having every mealtime interrupted by a telephone call; for the first time in over 40 years being home at Christmas and not being totally exhausted. Mind you, I m not sure if my wife will want me under her feet all the time! One thing we don t want to let go of is our friends which we have made over the past 25 years, which is one reason why we wanted to stay in the area. The Church Authorities do not actually encourage this but we (being awkward as ever) decided to ignore that. We couldn t see why we should leave all those we have known over the past 26 years and are privileged to call our friends. So by the time you read this I will have probably retired and will no longer be your Rector. May I therefore seize this opportunity to thank you all for the friendship, fellowship and support you have all given to Jane and me over the years. I apologise most sincerely to you for any mistakes I may have made, and ask your forgiveness. It has been a very great privilege and joy to be your Rector, and I thank you for allowing me to share in your lives. On behalf myself, Jane, and Charlotte, Alex and Richard, I offer you all our thanks and love. So possibly for the last time I sign myself, Your Priest and Friend, Edward Ward 1

7 FROM THE EDITOR As October begins so we in Edgmond, Kynnersley and Preston Wealdmoors find ourselves in interregnum without a Rector! Our colleagues in Tibberton, Great Bolas and Waters Upton are in the same boat as our front cover for this issue reminds us. Like Pirandello s play Six Characters in Search of an Author, we are six churches in search of a Rector! Meanwhile, with the help of our Resident Minister David, our part-time Reader Paul, our splendid lay workers and our longsuffering churchwardens, we soldier on. Please bear with me if details of services and other events printed in this magazine aren t quite correct I will do my best, but suggest you keep a close eye on your local noticeboards for all the latest information. The next edition of the Parish Magazine and Village News will cover the month of November and the deadline for contributions is Sunday, 1 st October. Please do let me have them in good time they can be delivered to me at the address on the inside front cover, or preferably ed to me at sarajanetaylor@yahoo.co.uk. Photos of all the activities going on in our villages are also very welcome. Don t forget that you can also read this magazine online on both the village and church websites (addresses on the front cover). DEMENTIA FRIENDLY CHURCHES The Rector and I recently met with Sarah Thorpe, from St Andrew s Shifnal, to discuss the possibility of the churches in our benefice becoming Dementia Friendly. Sarah is St Andrew s Dementia Co-ordinator and is also a licensed Dementia Support Officer for the Shrewsbury Episcopal Area. Part of her role is helping churches to take part in the Diocesan-wide initiative to become Dementia Friendly. You may have noticed a Certificate to this effect and also some questionnaires already in our churches. It was agreed that the 5 th Sunday in October should be designated as a Dementia Awareness Service to reach out to congregations. Sarah will take part sharing with us how we can all support this initiative. We do hope that you will give full support to help our churches to become Dementia Friendly Communities. Pat Jones 5

8 OUR LICENSED LAY READER PAUL BENTON WRITES Dear Friends, Thank you for welcoming us into your churches and into your hearts; it has been a privilege to assist Edward and David in their duties in the six parishes. Reflecting back over a ministry that has spanned sixty years from a very young boy chorister through to overseas voluntary service in the Falkland Islands with the Military Missions to Garrisons making sandwiches, cups of tea and offering friendship and a listing ear, to hospital chaplaincy coming alongside patients and families both in the joy of recovery or the sadness of bereavement, to coming alongside and praying with a class of students after one of their friends and fellow students had been shot dead, this has been a gift from God, a gift central to our shared faith, which is to come alongside others at the time of their need whether it be joyful or sorrowful. I was once asked in quick succession by three current Diocesan Directors the question why I had not put myself forward for Ordination. I had not; but the Chaplain in Chief of the Royal Air Force did so some 30 years ago. Re-entry into civilian life put paid to this, but not to what was to come and to where God was leading me. I simply followed him and my most cherished achievement was to become the full time Chaplain in the City of Wolverhampton College. It was as if I had been given a completely free hand to bring students from all backgrounds, all faiths and no faith together to learn, share and live alongside each other. Today more than at any other time God is crying out to each one of us to reach out to our neighbour with the hand of love. It has been a rich privilege to be a member of the laity called out by the people for the people and, let's face it, ministry has been and always will be coming alongside others where they are with an open mind, a loving heart and serving God. At the age of five I heard the story of the Good Samaritan and if there were to be any story that would accurately sum up a life of service to others and faith that has both sustained and is sustaining, then it is this one event where one person chose not to walk by on the other side of the road. From both Wendy and me a big thank-you for the wonderful gift card. We have purchased a spotting scope so that we can see the ospreys more clearly on our eight month sojourn to North Wales next year. We have decided to keep our home in Muxton and to remain within the six parishes so we will be coming to church as often as possible. May God be with each one of you, Your servant, Friend and Reader, Paul 6

13 PARISH WARDEN S REPORT Sadly, I have to advise that we have lost Andy Protheroe as one of our Police Community Support Officers. His title certainly covered the role he has been fulfilling particularly in Edgmond over the last nine years. Our loss is a gain for the youth engagement team at Mallinsgate Police Station a role which will be ideal for him as he has always been keen in engaging with youngsters and keeping them out of mischief. I am sure you will all wish to join me in thanking him for his help over the years he has been with us, and wishing him all the very best for the future and with his new job. Very few things have been reported in or near the village during August. Someone in the Caynton area returned home, after a long period away, to discover that a shed had been entered and some tools stolen. This was discovered on the 14 th. Other reports have covered suspicious activities. These follow. In Marsh Road someone pulled up on a private drive then drove off. This was at about 2000 hours. The driver was a white male and unknown to the occupants of the property. (No crime was committed). On the 30 th, I received a report of a young man taking notice of the properties in the High Street, and possibly smoking cannabis. (This was passed on to the SNT). As I write I have not received any feedback. John Keeping (813125) 11

14 EDGMOND PARISH COUNCIL Hi. I m Keith Humphreys and I live on Hillside. I have been a member of the Parish Council for the last twelve years. As well as holding full Council meetings in the Village Hall on the second Monday of every other month, we also have a number of sub-committees which meet on the alternate months, or earlier if need dictates. We also have representatives on outside bodies and take an active interest in other external groups such as Newport Regeneration Project, the Bus Users Group, the Helicopters Liaison Group and the Shropshire Association of Local Councils. We work with the local Neighbourhood Policing Team and our ward members and meet with representatives of Harper Adams University, the Village Hall and our local primary school throughout the year. We welcome every opportunity to discuss local matters with all residents and organisations. We are keen to keep everyone informed of local issues and to canvas your views on current topics this is sometimes not an easy task. We have therefore recently revamped our website. Have you had a look around the site recently? Please do log on to edgmondparishcouncil.co.uk; you will find a lot of local information about the Parish Council, its work, and our parish. We value your opinions and any suggestions you may have for other information or links to be included. We would also like to remind you that you can register on the site and you will receive an direct to your inbox whenever we add new information. We received funding for this new website from the National Association of Local Councils and we would appreciate more local residents signing up to this site. As a thank-you for doing this, your address will be entered into a prize draw which will take place at our Council meeting in October, so you have another chance to register in the next couple of weeks. The Parish Council is a statutory consultee for all local planning applications and we meet to discuss new applications as and when they are received by the Planning Authority. We value the views of the community and neighbours to sites of new applications as these assist us in representing your thoughts when we respond. We are currently responding to the appeals for the two applications on land adjacent to Egremont House and to the site off Shrewsbury Road. We have listened to the views of the local community and are supporting Telford & Wrekin Council as they refused both applications based on their current planning policies, stating that the proposals are contrary to both the local and national planning policies. We need our Neighbourhood Plan in place as soon as possible, as this will add even more strength to the fight against large-scale and inappropriate developments which, if permitted, would change the character and rural distinctiveness of our parish. Other work that we are involved in includes environmental maintenance and planting schemes, rights of way, play areas, street lighting and footpaths, notice boards and signs, roads and drains, etc. the list is endless! 12

15 Our meetings start at 7 o clock, with the first 10 minutes or so allocated for your personal visit to discuss any problems that you might wish to bring to our attention face to face. If you are able to attend our meetings you will be very welcome. If not, but you have points that you wish to raise, please contact our Clerk there is a contact us box on the website, or you can edgmondpc@btinternet.com direct, or alternatively call Katrina Baker on or leave a message on Councillor Keith Humphreys EDGMOND PARISH COUNCIL YOUR NEIGHBOURHOOD PLAN Quite a lot has happened since our last report. Your Parish Council has submitted the Edgmond Neighbourhood Plan to Telford & Wrekin Council. This is Regulation 15 of the process and has been as a result of much consultation with residents and stakeholders. We are confident that the Plan represents the views that you have given us and we have made some amendments as a result of the latest comments that were received at the Regulation 14 stage. In order to ensure that our Plan sends a very strong and positive message regarding the protection of Edgmond, its heritage and unique rural landscape with a distinctive conservation area and listed buildings, we engaged the services of a consultant to produce an Urban Design/Landscape Appraisal and Assessment. This document is appended to our Plan and provides evidence, with photographs, of the unique character of Edgmond which everyone wants to protect and enhance. I am hopeful that by the time you read this article in the magazine, our documents will have been accepted by Telford & Wrekin Council and the Regulation 16 consultation will have commenced. This is a further 6 week period for people to comment further. The Steering Group cannot amend the Plan further. All our documents (which will be available on the Edgmond Parish Council website, TWC website, in Newport Library and within the village) will be sent to an independent Examiner along with all the comments that are received and it is the role of the Examiner to determine whether or not the Plan needs further amendments, in order to address any points that may have been raised. The recommendation from the Examiner returns one last time to both Telford & Wrekin Council and to the Parish Council before a Referendum Version is produced which will be final document. We are still hopeful that our Plan will come to you, as a recommendation to adopt it at a referendum towards the end of The referendum is administered by Telford & Wrekin Council, as if it were an election. Voting will take place at the Village Hall and everyone, resident in the Parish, will have one vote. At the end of the voting period, the count will take place (by external administrators) and we will require 51% of the community to vote in favour of the Neighbourhood Plan in order for it to be adopted. When adopted, the Edgmond Neighbourhood Plan will become one of the Planning Policies of TWC and will shape the Parish up to

16 If you would like me to a copy of the Plan to you direct to your inbox, please the Parish Council at edgmondpc@btinternet.com. Alternatively, the Plan, with all the supporting documentation and the Character Assessment will be available on our website as soon as TWC announce the start of the Regulation 16 consultation. May we take this opportunity to thank everyone for working with us on this important document. Particular thanks go to the Steering Group, PHE (Protect Heritage Edgmond), HAU (Harper Adams University) and TWC (Telford & Wrekin Council). It has also been useful to have the help and guidance of Heritage England, Natural England and the Environment Agency. 19 Our Chairman, Councillor Mrs Ruth Evans, is keen to hear from any local residents regarding any matters relating to the Parish and we extend a warm welcome to all Full Council Meetings. In July, Members considered the closure of Horton Lane and a special meeting was arranged for 7 th September in the Village Hall at 8 pm. Your views are very important. Another topic that was discussed is the state and condition of some hedges which, due to them being overgrown, do cause visibility issues and in some cases obstruction and road-narrowing. If you do have roadside hedges, please can you have them cut back so that they do not cause a safety or visibility problem for other road-users. May I take this opportunity, on behalf of the Parish Council, to thank those who already do keep the hedges cut back and trimmed. We have invited the Headteacher and Chairman of Governors of St Lawrence Primary School to a future meeting in order that the Members can learn more about the school, its ethos and success and to have an opportunity to discuss any future projects or issues that they may be aware of. If you have any matters that you would like to bring to the attention of the Parish Council, please mail clerk@kynnersleyparishcouncil.co.uk or ring and the Clerk will be pleased to speak to you.
