Current news from across the KS-NE Conference View this in your browser The Cutting Edge March 23, 2018 Here's what's happening across our Conference, at least what I've heard about. Feel free to share this with anyone! Pastor Mitch Elrod has accepted our invitation to serve the Bazine and La Crosse congregations in western Kansas. Mitch has served in the Arizona and Nevada/Utah Conferences and is currently working in Texas. Along with ministering to these two churches, Mitch & Bev have embraced the opportunity to especially reach out to Hays, KS with 21,000 people and very little Adventist presence. They will be moving to Hays to begin their work on May 1. We

welcome the Elrods to our pastoral team. "Peggy Mast will come to represent the state of Kansas to the Coffeyville church this Sabbath," says Pastor Ethan Muse. "The State is reaching out to churches of all denominations across Kansas to get involved in helping needy children," says Pastor Ethan. "The College View Academy 3rd grade class took a trip this week to visit the state capital building in Lincoln," says Missy Sorter. "The first capitol building was constructed in 1867 and was a simple two story building. This is in sharp contrast to the expansive building that stands in the heart of Lincoln today. Teacher, Alana Paradise, and many parents accompanied the students on this fun trip," says Missy.

"With Revelation Today only one week away, all the KC churches are gearing up for the meetings," shares Bible worker Karen Matambo. "At New Life in Olathe, the members are connecting with their community through an interactive diabetes seminar with small groups, exercise burst training and healthy plant-based meals. Last Sabbath the members went into the community knocking on doors and handing out flyers to Revelation Today. One member reported, 'We met a man who said he watches It Is Written programming all the time and he wants to come to the meetings with John Bradshaw.' Thank you for your prayers and support as we REACH KC.

"Last Sabbath afternoon about thirty children's leaders came together to experience a day in the newly produced Adventist Vacation Bible School program, 'Sea of Miracles, VBX!'" says Sue Carlson (Children's Ministries Director). "People had a great time singing the songs, hearing the skits, playing the games and experiencing unique activities such as perfume making. Attendees were appreciative to hear of other resources, programs and websites for children's ministries. Many thanks to the Wichita South Church for hosting this great training experience!" says Sue.

"This week Pastor Elsey and I had to go to Lincoln for a funeral of a New Haven member," says Kyle Smith (youth pastor). "While there we were able to have dinner with some of our New Haven Union College students! It was great to see them and spend some time with them," says Pastor Kyle.

Gary Thurber, President of the Mid- America Union Conference, will be the guest speaker at Olathe New Life Community Church this Sabbath," says Pastor Joe Beazley. "Pastor Thurber served as a pastor in this area in the 80s and still remembered and appreciated." He has served as a pastor in the Kansas- Nebraska, Florida and Michigan conferences. He has also served as president of the Rocky Mountain, Indiana and Northern New England conferences.

"This week I taught a class at Union College on intergenerational ministry and complex diversity," says Tim Floyd (Youth/Young Adult Director). "It was great seeing some familiar faces and meeting new people, but even more importantly it was exciting sharing ways to build bridges to people who are different from you," says Pastor Tim. "I just spent four blessed days with the school chaplains from Europe who all gathered for training at our University in Romania," says Rich Carlson (Union College Chaplain). "I am now in Kenya at Maxwell Academy recruiting students for Union College. These are really good kids and fit the culture of Union very well. Home Sunday night after 3 1/2 weeks +!! It will be good to be home!" says Pastor Rich.

"The Gothenburg church got together for a fun night of games, food and fellowship Sabbath night," says Candi Callahan. "The evening started out with Haystacks. For Vespers we learned about and experienced the five senses God gave us we also talked about the Bible stories that highlighted the senses. Then we closed out the evening with games and laughter," says Candi.

"My third grade class at College View Academy had the privilege of having a special guest speaker, Terry Schwartz," says teacher Alana Paradise. "He shared his recent African mission trip pictures, Green Mambo Snake stories and African garments with my very

excited students. They were amazed with his stories of God s protection and were inspired by knowing that they can also be missionaries here in their own city, school and church. They re also very excited to read his book that he left with us, 'Never Alone,'" says Alana.

"We wrapped up the training for Revelation Today at Shawnee-Mission with Jack Phillips," says Karen Matambo (Bible worker). "Members are trained and ready to volunteer and visit guests. Now, lay workers are leading the training in preparation to lead evangelism efforts in their own churches past Revelation Today. We also had a Holy Spirit-filled citywide prayer led by Pastors Mike Fenton and Joseph Ikner on Wednesday. The churches are ready, the community is ready, now we're looking forward to the harvest God is bringing in. Please continue to pray for our Bible studies who are choosing to be baptized next month during Revelation Today!" asks Karen.

"The Union College Unionaires, band and orchestra visited the Omaha Memorial Church on Sabbath," reports Pastor Delmar Austin. "Students from the College and young people from the local church, led out in the worship service. We were all blessed by this special musical program," says Pastor Austin.

During the Fall and Winter months Piedmont Park s Social Committee hosts a Soup Supper/Guitar (Music) Vespers on the first Sabbath evening of each month, says Vanessa Schaecher. This month, after what felt like a long winter, they decided to have a Hawaiian theme to the event. The food was Hawaiian Haystacks, the décor was tropical and many folks dressed in festive outfits. About 100 people attended the evening and enjoyed the

food, fellowship and fun, says Vanessa.

"This past Sunday we had our Women's Ministry Meeting at Enterprise," shares Lisa Jahn. "The theme this month was a book exchange, which was fun. Also included are a couple pictures of the little ones holding their 'meeting' they were so cute!" says Lisa.

"This past Saturday night the Columbus Church celebrated St Patrick's Day with a church baked potato bar and game night. All enjoyed the time together," says local elder Lloyd Peterson.

"The place is decorated and ready for a group of our pastors' spouses this weekend," says Sue Carlson (Women's Ministries Director). "These ladies gladly serve alongside their pastor husbands and we're glad we can provide some relaxation and affirmation," says Sue.

"The Physics and Physical Science classes at Midland Adventist Academy went on an adventure to ifly," says teacher Jonathan Borne. "This was a unique opportunity to participate in a lab exercise outside of the classroom and school. Students learned about the wind tunnel, air resistance, and how to calculate their own terminal velocity. Many of the students experienced their first time flying. It was a great trip for both teachers and students," says Jonathan.

The offering this Sabbath is for Kansas-Nebraska Advance. This regular offering supports ministries that impact our entire Conference such as our Scholarship Fund, Evangelism, Youth/Young Adult Ministries and Broken Arrow Ranch. In March of 1974 the coastal city of Tubarão in southern Brazil was devastated by a flood. Read more... Here's what some of us from the office are up to: Norm & Jan Zimmerman (Trust Services Director) will be in Fairbury this Sabbath sharing for the worship service. John Sweigart (VP for Administration) will be preaching in Salina, KS. Tim & Teresa Floyd (Youth/Young Adult Director) will be worshiping with our New Haven Church family in Kansas City.

Sue Carlson (Women's Ministries Director) is in Grand Island along with her assistant Susan Sweigart to provide a special weekend for our pastors' spouses. Virgil Covel (Ministerial Director) will be in Topeka. I will be in Harper tomorrow to share a message with that congregation **If you know something that you think would be of interest to other Kansas-Nebraska Adventists, please let me know. I am trying to keep everyone on the "cutting edge" by sending this out each Friday. Have a wonderful Sabbath! ************************************* Ron Carlson, President Kansas-Nebraska Conference of Seventh-day Adventists 3440 Urish Rd.
