1 February/March 2009 Volume 21, No. 1 Dear Colleagues, February 11, 2009 we will celebrate World Day of the Sick John Paul II said this on the first World Day of the Sick. The Christian community has always paid particular attention to the sick and the world of suffering in its multiple manifestations. In the wake of such a long tradition, the universal Church, with a renewed spirit of service, is preparing to celebrate the first World Day of the Sick as a special occasion for growth, with an attitude of listening, reflection, and effective commitment in the face of the great mystery of pain and illness. This day, which, beginning in February 1993, will be celebrated every year on the commemoration of Our Lady of Lourdes, for all believers seeks to be "a special time of prayer and sharing, of offering one's suffering for the good of the Church and of reminding everyone to see in his sick brother or sister the face of Christ who, by suffering, dying and rising, achieved the salvation of mankind... For you, health-care workers called to the highest, most meritorious and exemplary testimony of justice and love, may this Day be a renewed spur to continue in your delicate service with generous openness to the profound values of the person, to respect for human dignity, and to defense of life, from its beginning to its natural close. (Letter Instituting the World Day of the Sick, 13 May 1992, n. 3). I have sent a package to all the parishes in the Archdiocese with suggestions on how to recognize and celebrate World Day of the Sick. I encourage you to contact your local parish to see what they are doing and if you can be involved. For you every day is World Day of the Sick and we are grateful for the hard work you do each day. This annual celebration is an opportunity to shed light on the Health Care ministry in your facility. 2 Transitions Rev. Mark Mossa, SJ has accepted the part-time Priest Chaplain position at Mt. Auburn Hospital in Cambridge. Fr. Mark is working on an S.T.D. at the School of Ministry and Theology at Boston College. Don Larkin, SJ is joining the Chaplaincy Team at Campion Health Center in Weston. Don is a recently returned missionary of 44 years. He has served in multiple settings. He was Coordinator of Health and Hospital Ministry in the Archdiocese of Kingston. He was involved in chaplaincy at University Hospital, Kingston, Jamaica for a period of 15 years. Don was one of the founders of the ELM Seminar, an ecumenical program based on the CPE model. The program provided basic training for lay persons and members of religious communities and prepared them as pastoral visitors who served in 10 hospitals across the Archdiocese of Kingston. The program, begun in 2000, continues today. Marybeth Harmon, Director of Spiritual Care Services at Caritas Norwood Hospital, is retiring to spend time with her grandchildren (numbering 12 in June), to travel and to connect with friends and colleagues. She is grateful for her ministry as Chaplain, for the support and for the learning that has transpired. She leaves with a heart full of blessings and an openness to serve as needed..
