3 PARISH LIFE Page 3 TODAY S READINGS First Reading Second Reading Gospel Reading Malachi 1: 14b-2: 2b, Thessalonians 2:7b-9, 13 Matthew 23:1-12 Dear Brothers & Sisters in Christ: A Message from Father Don Today s Gospel reminds us that the good example of one person can have far reaching effects. The advice Jesus gives is that our lives - not just our words - should bring the good news to others. In other words, we should practice what we preach. When we fail to do this, we rob our beliefs of their power to affect others. Think of the early Christian martyrs whose example of faith led others to Christ. This week spend some time reflecting on this passage. Realize that true belief is accompanied by action and Jesus emphasized the importance of action. We have all heard the saying Talk is cheap. But what does that mean in your own life? Jesus explains it when he says about the Pharisees Do not follow their example. They preach but they do not practice. Jesus sharpest criticism here is directed towards hypocrisy, the act of pretending to be holy while not treating others the way God wants us to. We are called to practice our religion as an expression of faith, sharing our gifts with those around us and helping others to bear their burdens. Together with your family determine ways you can show compassion and mercy to those in need. Lead your family from being me centered to being God and neighbor centered. Let your actions be a message of faith to everyone you meet. The attached list has theme suggestions for those items. If you are able to help with this effort, please bring your newly-purchased items to the Church Office anytime, but no later than January 15, Due to the date of this event, please refrain from purchasing any item that has a Fall/Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, or Valentine theme.
