3 PARISH LIFE Page 3 TODAY S READINGS First Reading Second Reading Gospel Reading Genesis 2:18-24 Hebrews 2:9-11 Mark 10:2-16 Dear Brothers & Sisters in Christ: A Message from Father Don Some people are more interested in the letter of the law than the spirit of the law. In today s Gospel the Pharisees tried to test Jesus by asking him if he agreed with the law of Moses regarding divorce. Jesus draws their attention to the true meaning of marriage. He reminds the Pharisees of the teaching from Genesis about the man and the woman becoming one flesh. Jesus is focusing on God s loving plan for marriage partners. In the second story, Jesus scolds his disciples for trying to keep the little children away from him. He gathers the children and blesses them. Once again he teaches that all who follow him must trust in God and openly accept the Good News. Although these two stories may seem disconnected, if you delve a bit deeper, you may realize they are not. Jesus calls us to be in communion with him and each other to which we are called. Within a married relationship there is an opportunity to support and affirm one another s best qualities as you share your faith together and work together for the kingdom of God. We see the beauty and creative power in truly being in relationship, one that brings us to wholeness. As adults we often fall into the trap of expectation. We expect too much of ourselves and of others. And yet Jesus admires the children and blesses them for their childlike awe and wonder. They are perfect in their lack of expectation and freedom of self-expression draws them into the love of our Savior, the communion of the kingdom of God. This week spend some time discerning how your relationships aid in your spiritual journey. Determine what makes you feel spiritually whole and how you are able to see God active in the areas of your life that still produce wonder and awe.
