3 PARISH LIFE Page 3 TODAY S READINGS First Reading Second Reading Gospel Reading Sirach 27:4-7 1 Corinthians 15:54-58 Luke 6:39-45 Dear Brothers & Sisters in Christ: A Message from Father Don At first glance, today s Gospel may seem to talk about two different subjects, but giving it a closer look, you will see that not only are they related, they even tie together with the First and Second Readings from today. The first part talks about getting our own house in order before we can minister to others: Remove the wooden beam from your own eye first. The second tells us that after we take care of our spiritual life, we will speak from the fullness of the heart, the good fruit mentioned in the Gospel. This is the kind of speech that builds up and does not tear down, the speech that points others toward Jesus Christ. This week, spend some quiet time reflecting on this passage. Jesus is asking us to have a creative attitude which will make us capable to go and encounter others without judging them, without preconceptions and rationalizing, but by accepting others as brothers and sisters in Christ. Realize we are never alone on our faith journey. In today s Gospel, Jesus talks about brothers helping brothers. Make a commitment to try and hold off criticizing others until you have cleared your own slate. Resolve to show your good fruit - things that show Christ is working in your life. Say a prayer asking God to make you more aware of your own inadequacies in life, so that you may become gentle in dealing with others. Join together with your family and let them know We re in this together. The norms on fas ng are from age 18 un l age 59. When fas ng, a person is permi ed to eat one full meal, as well as two smaller meals that together are not equal to one full meal.
