3 PARISH LIFE Page 3 TODAY S READINGS First Reading Second Reading Gospel Reading Jeremiah 31:7-9 Hebrews 5:1-6 Mark 10:46-52 Dear Brothers & Sisters in Christ: A Message from Father Don When someone calls attention to himself in a crowd, others sometimes say, Stop making a spectacle of yourself! In today s Gospel story, it is the blind beggar Bartimaeus who is irritating the crowd. He is shouting persistently to Jesus that the people are embarrassed by this public display of neediness. They attempt to shush him. But Bartimaeus shouts, Son of David, have pity on me! Jesus hears the beggar s plea and restores his sight. He tells Bartimaeus that his own faith has healed him. We all suffer from blindness of one kind or another because we fail to see things as Jesus does. While Bartimaeus prayer was for physical sight, perhaps ours might be for spiritual insight, a deep, personal relationship with God. Like this blind beggar s choice to follow Jesus, the miracles we request can change the direction of our lives. Our prayers are not meant just to be requests. They are above all, to be expressions of trust and commitment to a relationship with God, his divine grace and love. This week spend some quiet time discerning what influences in our society may weaken your ability to see as Jesus did. Ponder the power of a complete leap of faith. Mary Anne Gioia is a cradle Catholic who is passionate about learning about our faith and sharing it with others. In college, Mary Anne met the love of her life and best friend, Michael on an Antioch retreat for young adults and were married within a year. Mary Anne and Mike are blessed with four children and two grandchildren. Mary Anne has shared her love of the Lord with others at St. Therese de Lisieux Catholic Church in Wellington as an Extraordinary Minister of the Eucharist, Lector, Faith Formation teacher, facilitating Women of Grace and R.C.I.A. She made Cursillo in NJ in 1991 and is an active member of the Palm Beach Cursillo Movement. Mary Anne loves serving God s people through organizing feeding of the homeless and veterans at Thanksgiving and with an annual children s Christmas picnic. After much prayer and discernment, Mary Anne responded to God s call to obedience and is presently seeking to obtain Masters in Theology at Franciscan University in Steubenville Ohio while working full time as a business banker for a national bank.
