3 PARISH LIFE Page 3 TODAY S READINGS First Reading Second Reading Gospel Reading Isaiah 53:10-11 Hebrews 4:14-16 Mark 10:42-45 Dear Brothers & Sisters in Christ: A Message from Father Don We can often recognize those who are considered great in the world by the number of people they have serving and protecting them. In today s Gospel, Jesus teaches his disciples that it cannot be like that with them. He has come not to be served but to serve others, especially the poor and those who need healing. His greatness is seen most clearly in his laying down his life for others. Our greatness, Jesus tells us, depends on our service to all, not on just pushing ourselves forward. The desire to get ahead of others, to be number one, shapes so much of our human behavior. It s just natural, we think. But Jesus turns things inside out. Jesus calls us to a big heartedness, to live from his heart, the heart of the One who came to serve and to give his life as a ransom for many. We are often so slow to learn. Mercifully, the Lord shows us the same patience he showed his early disciples. Through Baptism we share in the church s ministry to serve all who are in need. We share Christ s mission of working for peace and justice in our homes, our parish and our community. This week I ask you to join together with your family and come up with a concrete plan of how you will serve others in our community, especially those most in need. High School Life Teen Camp 3

Mary Anne Gioia is a cradle Catholic who is passionate about learning about our faith and sharing it with others. In college, Mary Anne met the love of her life and best friend, Michael on an Antioch retreat for young adults and were married within a year. Mary Anne and Mike are blessed with four children and two grandchildren. Mary Anne has shared her love of the Lord with others at St. Therese de Lisieux Catholic Church in Wellington as an Extraordinary Minister of the Eucharist, Lector, Faith Formation teacher, facilitating Women of Grace and R.C.I.A. She made Cursillo in NJ in 1991 and is an active member of the Palm Beach Cursillo Movement. Mary Anne loves serving God s people through organizing feeding of the homeless and veterans at Thanksgiving and with an annual children s Christmas picnic. After much prayer and discernment, Mary Anne responded to God s call to obedience and is presently seeking to obtain Masters in Theology at Franciscan University in Steubenville Ohio while working full time as a business banker for a national bank. Through education and prevention, we can all help fight this disease. Every woman should be doing monthly self-breast examinations. Call your doctor if you notice a lump, thickening, or skin changes. This week make it your goal to call at least 5 women age 40 or over, ask if she has had a mammogram in the past year. Remind her that early detection is the best way to control breast cancer. Urge her to see a doctor or get a mammogram in the next 2 weeks. This only takes a few minutes, but it can save a life. For more information, contact the American Cancer Society at
