One or both persons must be registered and actively living their faith at St. Mary s Church for at least 6 months to celebrate their wedding here. All couples planning to be married at our parishes must attend a Pre-Cana program, Natural Family Planning program and FOCCUS evaluation. For those who were former members here, they must be registered and actively living their faith at the parish where they reside. Sacrament of Baptism: Baptisms are celebrated during Mass on Saturdays & Sundays (not during Lent or Advent). A family must be registered & actively living their faith at St. Mary s Church for 6 months to assure faith will be shared with the new born child. Godparents must also be registered in a Catholic parish or other Christian church & actively living their faith. A Baptism Class is held and is required for all parents. We ask that both parents attend this class together. Godparents are also encouraged and welcome to attend. For more information, please call the parish office ( ). Courses for all Catholics - University of Dayton Online Learning - Sign up for the online courses through the Virtual Learning Community for Faith Formation (VLCFF), a program of the Institute for Pastoral Initiatives at the University of Dayton. These adult faith formation courses support the Church's catechetical ministry and are for all Catholics. Registration for Cycle 7 opens Sept. 5, 2018 and closes Oct. 17, The courses run Oct. 21 Nov. 24, 2018 at a cost of $50 per course/$40 per seminar. Chuck will be leading a pilgrimage to Italy next summer, June 12th to June 22nd, Leave on June 12th to arrive and Celebrate our parish feast day of St. Anthony of Padua with mass at the Cathedral of St. Anthony, Padua following by a Feast day dinner. We will then spend nine days traveling to and enjoying Venice, Florence, Assisi, and Rome. We will tour many famous sites such as St. Peter s Basillica, the Vatican Museums, Sistine Chapel, Trevi Fountain, Paantheon, Colosseum, The Benedictine Abbey of Monte Casino, built in 529. We will see the Basillica of St. Mark s in Venice, the Basillicas of St. Francis and St. Clare in Assisi, and many other famous spots. Weekly Offering....Dec. 2, 2018 Adults Children Loose Immaculate Conception Religious Retirement Total.....$ Who is Miryam of Nazareth? None of us have met her. We know her through our religious imagination. Sacred Scripture, storytelling, tradition, church teaching, poetry, music, visual images, sculpture, and song are ways to learn of her and her ways. She was a Galilean Jewish woman, poor, illiterate, rural, young Spirit filled, blessed with the fullness of grace, and was enveloped from the beginning in the love of God. She is the divine feminine and prophet. She is a human being. She is our friend, sister, comforter. She is a powerful and loving mother of Jesus, faithful married woman, middle aged, and elder She lived through tears and tedium distress and bitterness, agony and death, joy and light, aches and pains Hail, full of grace... Prayer and life are an attentive listening in order to do, a basic willingness to be led by God in order to bear fruit. Pope Francis: Mary faces life s journey Three words sum up Mary s attitude: listening, decision and action. They are words that also show the path before us of what the Lord asks of us in life. She pondered the word received and was so united with God, so desirous that His will be done, that the Word could become incarnate through her. We honor her as mother ours, our families, our school, our parish, our congregation - the School Sisters of Notre Dame, our country... This week we celebrate the feast of the Immaculate Conception. The Immmaculate Conception is not about the conception of Jesus in Mary s womb. It s about the conception of Mary in her mother s womb years before. While Mary was conceived in the normal, human way through her parents (Joachim and Anne), the Immaculate Conception speaks to the fact that Mary was conceived without the stain of original sin. Immaculate means without stain. Ask yourself - who is Mary to me? This week, let us make a determined effort to think of Mary, spend some time with her, read scripture, say the rosary, (the family that prays together, stays together... ) How is God calling YOU to address His Mother? We are in challenging times let s call on Mary to hear our prayer. God bless! Family Connection Luke 3:1-6 During the season of Advent, we choose to add many activities to our family's schedule to prepare for our celebration of Christmas. John the Baptist reminds us that our repentance is another way in which we can prepare for the Lord's coming and our celebration of Christmas. Parish communities often offer a communal celebration of the Sacrament of Reconciliation during the Advent season. Your family might choose to participate in the communal celebration of the sacrament, or you might seek out this sacrament on an individual basis. Read together today's Gospel, Luke 3:1-6. Talk about how John the Baptist called upon the people to prepare the way of the Lord through repentance. Together as a family, prepare a simple reconciliation service in preparation for Christmas. Gather in a prayerful space, perhaps around the family Advent wreath. Read again from today's Gospel, Luke 3:1-6. Invite each family member to pray silently, asking God to forgive his or her sins. Pray together the Act of Contrition. Then celebrate God's forgiveness by sharing the sign of peace with one another. 9 2

If you are interested contact Amanda Kemme YOUTH ACTIVITIES RAFFLE FUNDRAISER The Effingham Knights of Columbus are conducting a raffle fundraiser with proceeds going towards various youth programs such as the Coats for Kids, contest awards, help kids attend March for Life, 5th Grade Vocations Field Trip and the Columbian Squires Circle. Tickets are $5 each or 5 for $20 with only 1000 printed. First prize will be the winner s choice of 1 of 2 firearms or $750. Second prize will be the winner s choice of 1 of 2 firearms or $500 or the prize can be a credit to the firearm of your choice. A valid FOID card is required to claim a firearm. 4 Mary, in the midst of your life, you heard your call. In hearing it, you were told, Do not be afraid. (Luke 1:30) In the busyness of your life, God offered you an invitation. On one ordinary evening, you were able to say yes. What about me, Mary? Will I be able to hear God s call in the midst of my life? Will God utter the same words of comfort delivered through another that the angel offered you? Will I be able to discern God s voice from all the others offering me invitations? Will I be able to say yes to God s invitation when it appears in the middle of my ordinary life? Somehow your heart was tuned to the voice of God. Somehow the Holy Spirit enabled you to hear and say yes to what God put before you. While I do not understand it all, I do know that your ability to hear God through the angel Gabriel helps me know that I will be able to hear God speaking to me in the middle of my life. Your ability to say yes to something that frightened you at first helps me, too, say yes to the invitations God puts in my life that frighten me. You show me the way, Mary, to hear God s voice, to overcome my fears, and to do God s will. In this season of Advent, when we celebrate your ability to hear God s invitation and respond positively, I ask that you pray for us. Pray that we, too, may have hearts tuned to God s voice. Pray that we might be comforted the way the angel Gabriel comforted you. Pray that we, too, can respond to God s invitations in our lives so that we might continue to bring light into the world the way you did by offering us the greatest light, Jesus. Mary, Mother of God, pray for us. Advent Reconciliation Services St. Mary s will have reconciliation service on Monday, Dec. 17 at 6:30 pm. This is the night that our 2 nd graders will make their first reconciliation. Let us come together as a parish family and support them and each other during this advent season. Let us show by our participation what a powerful sacrament this is. The Giving wreaths are on the doors at the back of church. Please take a tag or two and purchase a gift. Gifts may be returned to the church basement. Please have gift back to the church NO LATER than Sunday, Dec. 16!!!! Please make sure to attach the tag to the package. Receiving Advent by Tom McGrath One year during Advent, our parish priest invited us to write down on a slip of paper a word that named something that is keeping us from getting closer to God. He suggested it might be a fear, a resentment, or an attitude that shuts us off from the love God so wants to give. We were to fold the paper over a few times, grasp it tightly in one hand, and make a fist around it while he began to preach on the Scripture readings. After a minute, my hand began to ache. At two minutes, my hand grew numb. At three minutes, the hand started shaking uncontrollably. He told us to open our hands. I found how hard it was to do that. After grasping the piece of paper so tightly, my hand had stiffened and seemed to have a mind of its own. I can t remember what else he said that day, but I have never forgotten that lesson. Hold on to a resentment, fear, or bad attitude long enough and you will become paralyzed. As I begin Advent every year now, I start with the realization that I need to let go of any and all spiritual impediments I m hanging onto. Advent is a time of receiving. It s hard to receive if your hands are clasped shut. So I begin Advent once again with this prayer: Holy Spirit of God, open my hands, my eyes, my ears, all my senses, and all of my heart so I will be ready to receive your Advent blessings. And then I sit there in the Advent darkness, my hands open before me, waiting on God. Would you like to help decorate the church for Christmas? 5 Are you, or is someone you know, interested in learning more about becoming a Catholic priest? If so, the Vocation Office of the Diocese of Springfield in Illinois will be hosting a Thinking of Priesthood Day for men, aged (seniors in high school are welcome and encouraged to attend), seeking to learn more about discerning a call to the priesthood. This day of reflection will include Mass, presentations on priesthood, and the opportunity to meet with priests and seminarians. This event will take place from 9:30-7:00 on Thursday, December 27 at the Villa Maria Retreat Center in Springfield, IL, and will close with a dinner with Bishop Paprocki and priests of the Diocese. Fr. Jonathan Fassero, OSB a monk of Saint Meinrad Archabbey and a Spiritual Director at both Bishop Simon Bruté College Seminary and Saint Meinrad Seminary & School of Theology will be the presenter.
