1 Connection 15th Sunday after Pentecost week of September 6, 2015 We are inviting all who would like to join us on Wednesday evenings to practice from 7:30 to 8:30. You do not have to read music. All you need is the desire to make a joyful noise to the Lord! Some of the things we have planned in the next few months are: The Book Sale on October 17th. We plan to get together for dinner (date, time, and place to be announced) Donut Sunday! Yumm! (once a month) TOP TEN REASONS TO JOIN CHOIR 10. You're running out of clean clothes and the robe saves on laundry. 9. The church is usually crowded and you want to make sure you always have a seat. 8. You've just been selected for jury duty and you want to get used to sitting in a large group of people. 7. The collection plate is never passed in the choir. 6. There's a clock in the back of the church and you want to know when one hour has passed. 5. You've always wanted to know who sits in the back of the church but were afraid to turn around and look. 4. You've been known to nod off during the service and you don't want the minister to catch you. 3. The minister cannot look right at you during the sermon, so you never have to feel guilty. 2. The chairs for the choir are padded and are the most comfortable chairs in the church. 1. Actual singing is optional. PLEASE BE IN PRAYER FOR THIS MINISTRY AND IF YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS YOU CAN CONTACT THE FOLLOWING PEOPLE: BRIANA DUNN- CHOIR DIRECTOR - brianadunn89@gmail.com LORETTA MORSE - PRESIDENT MATT HOCH - VICE PRESIDENT IN THIS ISSUE Special Events 1 From the Office 2 Understanding Apportionments Part 9 3 Children & Family Ministry 4 5 September Mission Focus 6 National Back to Church 7 Calendar of Events 8-9 Sunday School Classes 10 Mission & Ministry 11 Senior Activities 12 Health and Education 13 Bible Study 14 Prayer & Praise 15 Senior Care Centers 16 16\September 6, \September 6, 2015

4 Now is the time to sign up you and your family for our Family Camp Out. The dates are September at Palmetto State Park, near Gonzales. The Children/Family Ministries and Student Ministry Teams are hosting this event. It is open to anyone it s a church-family gathering! There is more information at our display in the Gathering Place, however, here are some details that didn t make it into the registration brochure: Children & Family Ministry If you plan to stay in the RV Park, you MUST make your own reservations. We have only reserved the Group Camp and Pavilion. Also, payment for RV space is separate from the cost to the church. Our fees do not cover overnight stay in the RV Park. We apologize for this inconvenience and confusion. If the fee is a problem for you, please don t let it be the reason you do not attend. Please call or Marcy and we can work something out. And, if you are in need of camping gear, let me know. We have a lot of families within our church who may be willing to loan out camping gear. We are so excited about this Family Camp Out. There will be fun, games, worship, and a whole lot more! Please join us for this great weekend of fellowship and fun! HURRY! The deadline for registration is September 6. You may be able to register later but you get not get a t-shirt. Plus, knowing ahead of time how many persons are coming will help us when we are purchasing food. Thanks! Health & Education Ministry WN Monthly Article-September 2015 Greetings from your Wesley Nurse: Dawn Gonzales, R.N. Hello to everyone! I would like to provide an update about the Wesley Nurse programming that is scheduled for September to include my WN physical activity class called: Chair Yoga for Adults. I will also be providing WN health education on Diabetes. This WN health education program is impactful and filled with health information that will empower you to live a healthier life! For more information about my Wesley Nurse programs, please see my monthly calendar of events that is posted on the Windcrest UMC website. Also, please feel free to reach out to me, if any questions. September is National Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month: Get the Facts. Recognize the Signs. Ovarian Cancer is one of the most deadly of women's cancers. Each year, approximately 21,980 women will be diagnosed with ovarian cancer. In 2015, approximately 14,270 women will die in the United States from this disease. It is estimated by the World Health Organization IARC department that there are over 238,000 new cases diagnosed annually and nearly 152,000 deaths worldwide. This cancer typically occurs in women in their fifties and sixties with the median age being 63. Many women who are diagnosed with ovarian cancer have a genetic history that may include carrying the BRCA mutation gene and having a strong family history of ovarian cancer. The arrival of Fall can only mean one thing..pumpkins!!!! That s right you read it correctly the pumpkins are coming! They are scheduled to arrive on Sunday, September 27 at 4:00 p.m. Of course, we all know that date and time are subject to change; however, please go ahead and reserve that date on your calendar and be here to help us unload the truck! In the meantime, we will have the sign up sheets in the Gathering Place on Sunday, September 6, for everyone to reserve their favorite shifts to work the Patch. Also, we have online sign up at again this year. We are looking forward to 100% participation from our faithful Church family this year! Remember, the Pumpkin Patch helps fund all Children and Family Ministries programs! So, start thinking pumpkins and let s get ready to host the best Pumpkin Patch ever!!!! Children in grades 3-6 are invited to come and be part of the Children s Choir! We begin rehearsals on Wednesday, September 16 from 6:15 until 7p.m. The Choir will be led each week by Ms. Marcy and Ms. Dawn with occasional help from Ms. Kristin! We will learn some fun songs to sing in worship services and will begin working on this year s Christmas program very soon. See you all there! Unfortunately many women don't seek help until the disease has begun to spread, but if detected at its earliest stage, the five-year survival rate is more than 93%. The symptoms of ovarian cancer are often subtle and easily confused with other ailments. Symptoms may include: Bloating, pelvic or abdominal pain, difficulty eating or feeling full quickly, urinary urgency or frequency Other symptoms may include: Nausea, indigestion, gas, constipation or diarrhea, extreme fatigue, shortness of breath, backaches, and/or weight gain There is no adequate screening test of ovarian cancer at this time which is one of the reasons that this cancer is often discovered in later stages. Talk to your doctor if symptoms last more than 2-3 weeks. You are your best advocate. For more information on this health topic: Please visit the website for OvarianCancerAwareness.org Or contact your Wesley Nurse: Dawn at (210) , Ext # 142 Blessings, Dawn Gonzales, R.N. 6 September Mission Focus Mission & Ministry Even though the temps are still in the 90 s now, it won't be long before the cooler weather arrives. Donating during the month of September allows the CWS to prepare in advance for those sub-32 weather. The Cold Weather Shelter is an emergency shelter provided at Bethany UMC for the men and women in the areas of Walzem Road, Austin Highway, Eisenhauer Road, Salado Creek and Rittiman Road (both sides of IH 35) who have no home to go to when the temperature drops below 32. Upon determination the temperature will be at or below 32, a gold flag is displayed by placing it in the Bethany UMC signpost at the corner of Eisenhauer Rd. and Austin Highway which indicates the shelter is open that evening. Volunteers are then contacted to fill in 3 shifts: 5 pm - 9 pm 9 pm - 1 am 5 am - 8 am 1 am - 5 am (Covered by Haven for Hope volunteers) The Shelter opens at 5 pm and closes at 8 the next morning. Shelter guests are provided with: *A safe, warm place to congregate, worship and sleep in the Bethany Fellowship Hall. *Food to include a hot supper, hot breakfast, snacks and a sack lunch for the next day. *Miscellaneous items including personal hygiene items, hats, gloves, socks and other cold weather needs. We are a community of Christ-centered faith-in-action believers committed to sharing God s love with all people. This has been the guiding force behind the Shelter. The CWS is staffed completely by volunteers from several churches in the area. Without the help of many, the Shelter could not open. We have all been blessed by this ministry! The CWS needs the items listed below; or your financial support will allow them to procure these items. If you have items to donate, please place them in the large bins labeled CWS located in the Gathering Place near the Usher table and the Fellowship Hallway during the month of September. If you have a large load to donate or have questions about the CWS, please contact Maureen Barnes, , or moinsatx@gmail.com.
