2 MINISTER S MESSAGE CHURCH CONTACTS The Apostle Paul s conviction was that Christian communities of faith, whether Jew or Gentile, slave or free, male or female, were all treated equally! To become a Christian did not require adherence to Jewish Law (Torah), or the power of Rome, but to the keeping of God s laws and a declaration of the supremacy of Christ who supersedes all political, religious and cultural loyalties (Colossians 1:15-20). This does not mean that today we should disobey those in authority or refuse to pay our taxes to those who govern us (Matthew 22:21). God, in Christ, confers such authority for the well-being of all in society and we have to play an exemplary role as law -abiding citizens. However, in the moral wasteland of the western world today there is a clear hunger for instruction on what is, and is not, right, both inside and outside the church. As the muddy torrents of secular, multi-faith, new-age and popular self-interest values have surged through society, any links between Christian values that were instrumental in shaping our culture and society are gradually being washed away. One of the few bridges remaining above the floodwaters is that of the Ten Commandments. Most people know they exist but would struggle to name more than a few of them. Yet, they gave previous generations a moral certainty that our own age so spectacularly lacks. Of course, our society is more complicated today, and we are not the people of the Exodus but New Covenant people living in the light of Christ. Nevertheless, the Ten Commandments form the basis of the Word of God that our lives and values should relate back to. Therefore, in common with other churches in the UK this autumn, I am starting a J. John-based Group Bible Study on Tuesday evenings beginning on 14 th Sept at the church, so that we can work through, prayerfully and thoughtfully, what the Word of God says to us and what it means for us in our lives today. Please try to come along, and bring a friend with you. Yours in Christ, Iain. 2 Church Web Site: 15

The celebration of Edith Chambers 100 th birthday was much enjoyed by the many people who attended. Family members from Germany, Scotland and Ireland, as well as many church and other friends, enjoyed the special concert given by Lillington Ladies Choir. The church is grateful for the generous gift of a large screen television from Edith and her family. Edith will be spending her actual birthday in Munich with her family. We continue to pray for Dennis and Bunty Kitchen and Joyce and Cecil Limmage. It was good to see Joyce in church recently. Both Hilda and Ken Robertson have had nasty falls resulting in a lot of bruising and discomfort. We send them our love and hope they soon feel much better. Please continue to pray for Debbie Hill as she returns to Birmingham for the results of her scan. Mavis Pearce has also had a fall resulting in a badly bruised face. We send love and greetings to Isabel Hutchins, Barbara Clarke and other house-bound friends. This month we bid farewell to Robert Coburn who is completing his sandwich year in industry during which time he has been employed at Aston Martin at Gaydon. Robert has been a regular member of the congregation and a valued member of the Vision4Life Group. We shall miss having Robert with us but wish him well as he holidays in Vancouver and Ireland before completing his final year of study at Lancaster University. 3 Hazel Hobbs ROTA FOR SCRIPTURE READING DURING MORNING WORSHIP Please check and initial the rota on the notice board. If you find that a date is not suitable please find your own replacement and amend the rota. Jane would be delighted to hear of anyone else who would like to serve the church in this way.

4 ANDREW DAVIDSON TELLS HIS STORY I moved to Leamington from Bristol in 1989 with my wife, Anne, and two daughters, Rosie and Catherine, who were then of primary school age. We had lived in Bristol for five years and left reluctantly after the company I worked for re-organised and my job disappeared. My new job was in Braunston and although we knew nothing about the Midlands, Leamington seemed to be a nice place to live and proved to be a very good place to bring up a family. The job at Braunston lasted for barely two years until the part of the business I was working in was sold. Although the company could offer other jobs overseas, the family was reluctant to go abroad again having spent five years in Germany before we went to Bristol. I decided to set up a consultancy business and for a very uncertain period both Anne and I were self employed. The business did eventually grow but life was certainly easier after Anne got a job at Coventry University. This was a very happy time with our daughters growing up. As I was mainly working from home I had plenty of opportunity to be with them during their school years. Although I had attended the local Methodist church as a child, I was not a regular churchgoer. Anne was, and for a number of years she went to St. Mary s Church in Leamington with Rosie and Catherine and later with her father, Ed, after he moved from Scotland. Anne and Ed joined Radford Road around 2000 to find a style of worship closer to that with which they were familiar. While the girls were at university Anne became ill and for a period was not able to get to church. I started to bring Ed to Radford Road and I joined the church in The support we received from the Radford Road church during Anne s illness, and after she died, was enormous. I was also extremely grateful for the support during Ed s final year when he spent a long time in hospital and then moved to Homewood. After Anne died, working from home on my own was not the fun it had been initially and when one of my customers offered me a job it was hard to refuse. After about fifteen years of working for myself I suddenly found myself employed in a company again - a very interesting transition. The company is based just outside London and I spend most of the week away from Leamington but am very pleased to be at home most weekends. 4 CHURCHES TOGETHER IN THE LEAMINGTON AREA (CTL) Leamington Churches continue to work together to reach out to the people of the town.
