2 Church History Seventy-six Years, Six Ministers, Three Buildings, Two Names, One Congregation: The First Presbyterian Church of Boone by the Numbers On September 10, 1939, the congregation of the First Presbyterian Church of Boone held a meeting in the old Appalachian High School for the purpose of extending a call to Rev. John I. Rhea to become its pastor. The Home Mission Committee of Holston Presbytery fixed Dr. Rhea s salary and the church s part was a princely $700 per year. Some time between December of that year and February 1940, the name of our church changed from First Presbyterian Church of Boone to James I. Vance Memorial Presbyterian Church of Boone. Dr. Vance, a physician and preacher who lived in Tennessee and vacationed in this area, had died at his summer home in Blowing Rock in late 1939, and our organization, with the consent of his family and permission from the Holston Presbytery, renamed the church. Later in the decade, the name would be changed again to its original form. In early 1942, Dr. Rhea resigned to enter the Army as a chaplain. In July of 1942, Mr. Marion Currie of Augusta, Georgia was called and installed as our second minister. Sixteen months later, Rev. Currie resigned to take a pastorate in Kingsport, Tennessee, and the congregation secured Rev. Louis J. Yelanjian as supply pastor. A month later, the congregation issued a formal call to Mr. Yelanjian to become the pastor, but he seems to have declined the offer and continued to serve as supply until October of On September 13, 1944, the congregation extended a call to Rev. J. K. Parker, Jr., of Concord, North Carolina, to become our minister. He accepted and was installed six weeks later. Mr. Parker remained the much-loved pastor of this church until his retirement in Coming from Columbia, South Carolina to serve the church from 1975 to 1991 was Dr. David A. Long, III. Under Dr. Long s leadership we held our first genuine Seder service and annual Reformation Sunday services. Dr. Long supported the beginning of the Friday Club for retired members of the church, organized services and programs with outstanding guest ministers and teachers and Holy Week services that connected the disparate church communities in our area, and oversaw the renovation of the Howard St. church, completed in In 1991, he left to begin a Presbyterian congregation in Richmond Hill, Georgia. Dr. Ron Bowie accepted our call in 1993 and stayed at First Presbyterian until his retirement from the ministry in First Morning Out, the inclusion of a Stephen Ministry, the formation of a church history committee, praise and worship services, and a number of support/social programs for retired singles and senior members of the congregation in a new church on Big Valley St. are hallmarks of his time with us. In the times between installed pastors, First Presbyterian has been fortunate to have been served by outstanding interim ministers. Rev. Louis J. Yelanjian, 1944, Dr.. Don Price, , and Rev. Joel Long, , provided leadership and stability. In 2014, Rev. Jeff Smith came from Eastminster Presbyterian Church in Columbia, South Carolina to become our sixth minister. We welcome him to his new church home and look forward to a long and productive association with him and his family. Seventy-six years, six ministers (and three very important interim pastors), three buildings, two names, and always, always, always, we have been one congregation stepping forward in service to God.
