1 Ka Leo Mekokiko Nov Dec 2012 Ka Leo Mekokiko THE VOICE OF METHODISM Hawaii District NOVEMBER DECEMB4R, 2012 VOLUME 28 NUMBER 11 BISHOP CARCAÑO S VISIT TO HAWAII Bishop Minerva Carcaño, our new episcopal leader, will be visiting Hawaii with her daughter, Sofia, from December (she is planning to visit Guam and Saipan in a future year). She will attempt to do a windshield tour - driving by and sometimes a very brief walk-through of as many churches as time allows and will also be meeting pastors, mostly by geographical areas. There will be opportunities for laypeople to meet the bishop as well. The bishop has requested low-key, informal gatherings. Here is a the schedule, subject to adjustments: Sunday, December 16, Big Island: Preach at Honoka a UMC, Kona UMC is invited to join an informal welcome potluck pupus reception after the Honoka a worship service. There will be a drop-in potluck pupus reception at 4:00 p.m. at Hilo UMC. Na alehu UMC folks are invited to join that reception. Monday, December 17, Oahu: Windward windshield tours in the morning and lunch with Korean Caucus clergy during the day. Oahu Advent Clergy Dinner at Wesley UMC at 6 p.m. Tuesday, December 18, Oahu: East and Downtown Honolulu windshield tours and meetings with selected district lay leaders and clergywomen. Wednesday, December 19, Maui: lunch with clergy; windshield tours; drop-in potluck heavy pupus reception at Ala Lani UMC from 5-7 p.m. Thursday, December 20, Kauai: lunch with clergy; windshield tours; drop-in potluck heavy pupus reception at Lihue United Church from 5:30-7:30 p.m. Friday, December 21, Oahu: Leeward and Central windshield tours and meetings with clergy. Saturday, December 22, Oahu: drop-in potluck heavy pupus reception at Honolulu First UMC from 9-11 a.m. Meeting with Pacific Islander clergy at 11:00 a.m. Tentative: video conference with Guam and Saipan at 12 noon HST 8:00 a.m. on Sunday on Guam and Saipan. Sunday, December 23, Oahu: preach at Pacific Islanders UMC, tour First LAP program. Return to Los Angeles. Regarding gifts: while the bishop has no expectation to receive gifts, local church hospitality has been very generous and thoughtful. Please take into consideration of the airline s limited baggage regulations and charges. Another suggestion is to be willing to ship/mail the gifts to the bishop s office after the gift presentation. Consumable gifts are also a good choice...things they can enjoy during their stay in Hawaii. Thank you so much for your kind consideration.

2 2 Ka Leo Mekokiko Nov Dec 2012 B Ministry Musings from the District Superintendent Focus to promote C.D.M.L.F. in our district: Connection to the Gospel of Jesus Christ for all people Discipleship in Christian formation prayer, study, meditation, etc. Ministry using identified Gifts and Graces Leadership development and training rooted in Christian formation Fruitfulness that can be discerned and measured DISTRICT CHRISTMAS GIVING LIST As you consider your gift list for the celebration of Jesus Christ, please consider these as recipients of your generosity: 1. STRENGTH FOR THE JOURNEY CAMP: this is an annual week long camp on the North Shore that ministers to those who are living with HIV/AIDS. Rev. Charlene Zuill is the director of the camp, and many volunteers locally and from the mainland come to serve the participants in heartfelt and creative ways. 2. FIRST LAP: this ministry, led by Matthew Taufetee of Pacific Islanders UMC, is an after prison ministry (First Life After Prison) which provides six months of housing, counseling, and Christian formation. The success rate (about 75%) for participants staying out of prison is four times greater than government programs. 3. Hawaii District Programming: with the budget crisis in our annual conference, districts will no longer receive block grants that have helped subsidize programs, such as youth and young adult ministries, discipleship workshops, etc. Your gift will go to the DLT budget and will be used only for programming. Please make checks payable to HUMU and note in the memo section District Christmas Giving or you may designate gifts specifically. Thank you for your generosity!! BRITT LECTURES, FEBRUARY 15-18, 2013 The late Dr. Clarence Britt and his wife Caroline established this lecture series in 1980 to bring high quality theological education to the Hawaii District. We are pleased to have the Rev. Dr. Anna Carter Florence as the 2013 Britt Lecturer. She is one of the most respected and sought after lecturers in the field of preaching. Dr. Florence is the Peter Marshall Associate Professor of Preaching at Columbia Theological Seminary in Decatur, Georgia. She is an ordained minister in the Presbyterian Church (USA) and holds degrees from Yale College and Princeton Theological Seminary (M.Div. and Ph.D.). Before joining the Columbia faculty in 1998, Anna served as an associate pastor for youth and young adults at Westminster Presbyterian Church in Minneapolis. Her books include Preaching as Testimony and Inscribing the Word, and she is a frequent teacher and lecturer in this country and abroad. In the fall of 2012, she delivered the Lyman Beecher Lectures on Preaching at Yale Divinity School; her next book is based on those lectures. Anna and her husband, the Rev. David Carter Florence, have two lacrosse-playing sons, Caleb (Kenyon College 2014) and Jonah (Decatur High School 2014). They also have three dogs, two cats, two sheep and a flock of chickens. The lectures are on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday evening at 7:00 p.m. A question and answer time will follow. On Monday, there will be a workshop for clergy from Grace and aloha,

4 4 Ka Leo Mekokiko Nov Dec 2012.MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR. DAY MARCH - MONDAY, JANUARY 21 The Hawaii Methodists are marching, celebrating, and singing once again in honor of Martin Luther King, Jr. and the social and spiritual principles that he championed during his lifetime. This year s march is on the day after the Presidential inauguration. We will be making our first attempt to give you singing on the march a little more unity. If our youth and young adults would like to become familiar with some of the hymns and gospel music we will be singing please Roman Leverenz at romlev003@gmail.com and he will be happy to share the titles with you once they have been decided upon. The youth of First United Methodist will be leading this effort. The instructions for marching are the same. Just show up at the Magic Island parking lot by 8:30 a.m. at the latest and look for other Methodists. Please come to the lot so that we can all start off together. Many churches will be wearing their t-shirts and we will be displaying the Methodist banners we have been using over the years. We are not too hard to find. The March itself starts at Magic Island and ends up at the Kapiolani Park Bandstand. It takes about an hour or so to complete. Many of the groups stay around the Bandstand area and make a family day out of this event. There is continuous entertainment, food booths and vendors. In fact, at least one of our Methodist youth groups will be a part of the entertainment. And the beach is right across the street. Feel free to stay as long as you want or just go home and rest. The Christian and prophetic messages given by King are just as relevant today as they were in his time. There is no peace without justice. He can never conquer hate. Only Love can do that. As we march to honor Martin Luther King, Jr., and his legacy, it can be easily stated that we are honoring one man who himself honored and glorified our King of King, Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit. Glory, Glory, Hallelujah! March on! ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ CAMP MEKOKIKO The September yearly endowment campaign raised $6,500 this year. This along with the holiday building fund should make possible the beginning of the next construction project the first bunk house! With the bunk house complete there will be enough room to book some of the groups that keep inquiring but can t be accommodated because oiur bed count isn t yet high enough. Keep the chapel in your thoughts and conversations! Is there someone out there willing to donate the $55,000 needed as at mission, a memorial or a dedication? HAPPY HOLIDAYS
