Greetings, families and friends of UUMC! As you may know, UUMC is participating in the 15 month- Readiness 360+ Church Revitalization training program. Every quarter, our Readiness 360+ leadership team and I attend a full day of training for United Methodist churches in the West District. With teams from those churches, we learn about discipleship and what it means to be a missional church. It has been an intensive, yet exciting process! In addition to the quarterly trainings, our Readiness 360+ leadership team and I have been meeting every other Sunday to study and discuss books about discipleship, missional alignment, witnessing, evangelism, and multicultural competency. These readings have helped us reflect on who we are as church and on what we are called to do as God s people. In addition, they have helped broaden our understanding of church and the scope of our ministry in today s world. Among all the helpful books we have studied, I recommend The Wolf Shall Dwell with the Lamb: A Spirituality for Leadership in a Multicultural Community to anyone interested in learning more about these topics. Rev. Dr. Eric H. F. Law, the author, is an ordained Episcopalian priest and the founder and executive director of the Kaleidoscope Institute. He is a national leader and consultant in equipping church leaders to create inclusive and sustainable churches and communities. In this book, Law provides his insights on how to live in peace in a multicultural community by understanding the power dynamics between different ethnicities. He shares his own and others experiences of cultural diversity and explains the importance of cultural competency in today s diverse society. This is also a helpful book for anyone interested in learning more about the many different cultures in our community and area of the country. In addition to the book recommendation, this is your INVITATION to the NEW CHURCH YEAR KICK OFF on Sunday, September 9! Dr. Heidi Vasquez, the Principal of Franklin Elementary School, and her family are joining us in worship that morning. During worship, she will share our monthly Mission Moment. After worship, everyone is invited to an ALL CHURCH POTLUCK AND BARBECUE! We are inviting Franklin staff, students and their families to this event, as well. 3 SUMMER TIME CHANGE We are on summer time mode. Our worship service at 10:00 a.m. This beginning time will be maintained through September, when the Church Council will consider whether to continue the 10:00 a.m. start time. The Adult Bible Study starts at 8:45 a.m. Attention Movie Lovers The Movie Lovers group will meet on Tuesday, September 18 to see the first showing of the chosen film, hopefully starting between 10 and 11 a.m. Which movie we see, and which theater we go to, depends on what s showing that week, and that will be announced in worship the Sunday before the gathering. Our discussion after the film will be at either Las Fuentes or Farmer Boys. The $5.00 price at the Studio Movie Grill makes that theater attractive, but it s also popular and can be crowded. We will resume Esther- Lydia Circle with our first fall meeting on Thursday, September 20, at 10:30 at Doris Washom s apartment (#202) at Missions Commons, 10 Terracina Blvd., Redlands, A short program will be followed with desert. If you wish to extend the fellowship of dessert and drink, bring a light lunch for a noon meal. The Sixty-Plus Fellowship and Potluck will start up again on Wednesday, September 12 at 11:45 am. Bring your favorite dish to share and enjoy the fun and fellowship. See you then, Eleanor Johnson and Elaine Thorpe Singing in the shower is FINE but singing in the choir is DEVINE. Come join in the fun! Rehearsals begin Wednesday September 5 at 6:45. We will be working on choral music for Sunday worship and special music for Advent. I am looking forward to a joyous year!

4 Summary of Church Council Meeting of August 26 The Council reviewed a number of possible vision statements and committed to pray about them so that at the September meeting one could be agreed upon and presented to the congregation. A motion was passed to allocate $300 from mission support for the prison at Chino (CIM) to support the protestant church there. David Nesamony agreed to serve as chair of this year s stewardship campaign. Thank you David! A motion was passed to continue with the 10:00 am church start time. Leslie Kowalski discussed the plans to have both an adult and a children s cantata this Christmas. The children will begin to prepare with occasional brief reversals after church. Dale Wintergerst reported that we will have to change our gardening service due to a lack of insurance by the current group. The next council meeting is September 23. All interested members and friends are welcome at the August 26 meeting.
