The Rome-Carrollton Newsletter A Quarterly Publication Rev. Dr. David S. Naglee District Superintendent _ September, 2016 Service of Installation for Bishop Sue Haupert-Johnson September 18th 4:00 pm Peachtree Rd. UMC The Service of Installation of Bishop Sue Haupert-Johnson as Episcopal leader of the North Georgia Conference will be held Sunday, September 18, at 4 p.m. at Peachtree Road UMC in Atlanta. The special service is a time for our Annual Conference to gather for worship and to welcome Bishop Haupert-Johnson and her family and to give thanks for her assignment to the North Georgia Conference. The service will be followed by a reception. Childcare will be provided for children ages 6 weeks to 8 years old during the Service of Installation. To make childcare reservations, evening childcare@prumc.org. Deadline for reservations is Wednesday, September 14, at 5 p.m. Childcare will open at 3:45 pm. Several North Georgia churches extended invitations to the Conference to host the service, and Peachtree Road was chosen among them because of accessibility, parking, availability of seating in the sanctuary, and facility to host the reception. Bishop Haupert-Johnson ("Bishop Sue") was elected bishop by the 2016 Southeastern Jurisdictional Conference and was assigned to the North Georgia Conference by the SEJ Committee on Episcopacy. She begins her four-year term in North Georgia on September 1.
Amazing Grace Offering What is the Amazing Grace Offering? The United Methodist Children s Home Amazing Grace Offering calls on Christian people to help us realize the day when all children live in a loving, compassionate, and nurturing home. By collecting our special offering, which is taken once a year across the North Georgia Conference to provide a significant portion of The Children s Home operating income, you will help us realize this vision. How can churches participate in the Amazing Grace Offering? Giving to the Children s Home Amazing Grace Offering enables us to recruit and train new foster parents; to feed, clothe, house and educate the children and teens entrusted to our care; and to provide transitional housing and support for homeless families. We are able to demonstrate the love and teaching of Jesus Christ thanks to the generosity of your congregation. The Children s Home is not in the North Georgia Conference budget, and we do not receive any apportionment. Your support is critical to our efforts to help children and families in need. A Message from our District Relief Coordinator This summer, I have been asked to lead the ROCA district ERT/Disaster relief coordinator efforts for the year. I am currently working on obtaining a list of active ERT Teams throughout the district and attempting to coordinate future trainings. Emergency Response Teams are a tremendous way for congregations to be the hands and feet of Christ in times of disaster. Through the certification process that ERT Trainings provide, the team member becomes knowledgeable about how UMVIM and UMCOR coordinate efforts to help in times of crisis in affected areas. This ministry on a personal note has meant so much to me while serving Bethlehem UMC in Bremen. Our church got behind our efforts to serve by having 14 certified chainsaw ERT team members. Through the work of the Holy Spirit and our dedicated church members, we have created an ERT response trailer fully fitted for not only our chainsaw equipment but for other disasters which may lead to our service. We have also built a special building to house not only the trailer, but other equipment we have on the ready to help. Our team has served in relief in places such as Boaz, Ala. and most recently in Warner Robins, Ga. So to begin the process in your church, or if your church already has an ERT Team and is in need of re-certification training, please provide me your church's ERT Team coordinator and Pastor contact information: name, phone number(s), , mailing address and I will forward mine. To learn more about UMC's mission opportunities, disaster or otherwise, please visit Have a blessed day! Britt Madden Jr., Pastor Bethlehem UMC-Bremen

Welcome Celebration for General Board of Global Ministries October 22, pm to 5 pm You are invited to join us as we welcome the leadership, administration, staff, and missionaries of the General Board of Global Ministries ( GBGM ) of The United Methodist Church to Georgia and the city of Atlanta. GBGM is the global agency of our denomination and has moved their headquarters from New York City, New York to Atlanta, Georgia. GBGM will partner with Emory University, Clark Atlanta University, The Carter Center, The Center for Disease Control, and many other agencies to improve countless lives. They have brought jobs to the area as well as new people from all corners of the world into Georgia. To celebrate this move and the official opening of the new headquarters at 458 Ponce de Leon Ave Northeast, the congregations of The United Methodist Church in Georgia are throwing a party on the Belt Line (Green Space C). This party will be for the people who work with GBGM, our congregants, the City of Atlanta, and the State of Georgia. The date is October 22, 2016, from 1:00 pm to 5:00 pm. We will provide food, music, games, and activities to celebrate the arrival of GBGM and to welcome all to the Peach State. We would be honored if you would join us and show your support and welcome to these who have now made Georgia their home. We will have time to introduce you and to share our appreciation with you for joining us on this occasion. We hope to connect you with GBGM and the entire United Methodist family.

Apportionments and Church Giving United Methodist giving travels! We don t think of money as something that travels. It has neither hands to grip the steering wheel of a car, nor feet to traipse across the countryside. But, United Methodist money does move. It travels, and our apportioned giving system is the fuel. As United Methodists, we hold the map the ministry map a guide that shows the path of our benevolence. And through the direction of the Holy Spirit, we are able to chart new courses and forge ahead in ministry. Your giving travels from the collection plate, through your church doors, onto the pavement, and out into the world. Apportionments are fuel for ministry. Apportioned giving is a term which describes how the money you give to your church each week is divided and distributed throughout the United Methodist Church. Apportionments are fuel for ministry. They enable us to share the concerns of many people. When we work together as God s children and pool our giving, we are able to see the word apportionment not as a constricting budget item but as a vehicle bringing God s grace into our churches, our conference, and beyond. If my giving travels, where exactly does it go? Good question! When you give to your local United Methodist Church, your giving is divided into many pieces, and travels to many different places. It generally goes to support three significant areas listed below. 92.0% of your giving stays in your church 2.4% of your giving goes to the General and Jurisdictional Church Funds 5.6% of your giving goes to support the ministries of the North Georgia Conference For More Information: You can go to the Conference Website in the search box located in the upper right hand corner-type apportionments and church giving
GEORGIA PAUMCS ANNUAL CONFERENCE The Rome-Carrollton District was well represented at this year s Annual Conference of the Georgia Professional Association of United Methodist Church Secretaries (PAUMCS) which was held at St. Simon s Epworth By The Sea. We had representatives from the District Office-Josie Hickom, Lithia Springs UMC-Georgia Deakins, Midway UMC-Carrie Keller, Moore s Chapel UMC- Doris Wyatt, and Georgia Commission on Higher Education-Leskey Baskette participating this year. Our Theme was Hands to Work, Hearts to God. Our workshops for the weekend were 1) Keeping Our Methodist History Alive; 2) Have You Googled Lately; 3) Beyond 9 to 5: Maintaining Spiritual and Physcial Health. We also had the Ministry of Team Radiate who shared with us what God is teaching them about how to radiate with His Love regardless of life s daily challenges. Needless to say we spent 3 days learning, networking, and worshipping. Next year our Conference will be held in LaGrange, Ga. All Administrative Assistants, Secretaries, and UM agency staff are encouraged to be involved. If you are interested in being a part of this great organization, contact Josie Hickom at or her at rocangc@bellsouth.net.
