1 OUR MISSION STATEMENT: Growing In Faith Together (G.I.F.T.) FROM THE PASTOR: First of all in my absence, I join with you in welcoming Fr. Cyrus Gallagher as he represents (CFCA) Christian Foundation for Children and Adults. I thank him for covering for me, even doing some baptisms, and proclaiming the Gospel calling us to service on behalf of the poorest and most vulnerable of our world. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The Gospel of Mark continues to challenge us to put others first as Jesus with resolve heads to Jerusalem. Along the way he calls James and John to task for their misunderstanding of his teaching and the ignoring of his example. Eventually, they will get it but in the meantime, like the rest of flawed humanity, they are stuck in who is number ONE. This is a common anti-christian virus and the only antidote is a little suffering and maybe even humiliation. Jesus is on his way Up to Jerusalem to experience the same. He, the Lord of the universe, does not climb the mountain to be seen as conquering King; rather, he submits to the will of the Father and thus offers a model of power showing itself in suffering service. That is the lesson he is trying to teach James and John (and us). Perhaps, the era of making cheap slogan banners for church is past. But if the era were not past, a line from the Gospel today would cut to the heart of any real disciple of Jesus--- IT SHALL NOT BE SO AMONG YOU! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Blessings to you, all you good servants of the Lord; you are number one million and some! 3 Faith Formation Upcoming All Saints Breakfast Mark your calendars for Dec. 1 & 2 for the holiday bake sale and Dec. 2 nd for the breakfast. Stay tuned for more details about his event. Food Shelf Service Project Kudos to the children and families in grades 2-6 who collected a whopping 158 pounds of food for their first service project. The food collected goes to our local food shelf in St. Peter. Fundraisers Thank you for supporting aluminum recycling and Cans for Christ. Please place your cans into the barrels in front of the trailer. Also, please do not put glass, plastic, or garbage in the barrels. MINNESOTA MARRIAGE PROTECTION AMENDMENT Be informed: The November 6 th election ballot will include a ballot question asking Shall the Minnesota constitution be amended to provide that only a union of one man and one woman shall be valid or recognized as a marriage in Minnesota. Voting Yes means you want to preserve the definition of marriage as between one man and one woman. If you leave this ballot question blank, it counts as a No vote against preserving the traditional definition on marriage. Remember to vote Yes! Also, Vote Yes lawn signs are available in the parish office. IN YOUR CHARITY, please pray for the repose of the soul of Lorraine Fruth, who passed away October 9, 2012 in Iowa. 4 Catholicism: Adult Faith Formation Thank you to those who stopped at the Adult Faith Formation display during the Ministry Fair last weekend. Several people indicated an interest in learning more about the Catholic Faith and have signed up to participate in the Catholicism: Adult Faith Formation sessions on Wed evenings from 6:30-7:30 in the Family Room, beginning on Wed. evening, Oct. 24 th. During this Year of Faith and Evangelization, we will be offering an opportunity to our adult parishioners to grow in their understanding of the Catholic Church and the Faith that we profess as a Christian Community. This pro-gram explains not only what Catholics believe and why, but also displays in visual detail the richness of the Church s global culture. During each lesson, we will listen to a presentation of the Church s essential teaching by Father Robert Barron and travel with him around the globe to see the Faith in the depths of its beliefs and practices. The Student Council at John Ireland School is again happy to sponsor Stuff A Truck. All the food we collect goes to the St. Peter Food Shelf. Please help the area food shelf by donating non-perishable food items: canned vegetables and fruits, baby formula, cleaning supplies, peanut butter, shampoo, pasta, baking supplies, cereal, etc. There will be a box in the church narthex to put your donations in. We will be collecting food from October 22 nd to November 15 th. Thank you for being so generous to those in need! The John Ireland Student Council World Mission Sunday Next weekend we will have a second collection supporting World Mission Sunday. Please see the flyer in this week s bulletin. VIRTUS 2012 THE DEADLINE FOR YOUR ANNUAL ONLINE TRAINING FOR 2012 IS OCT. 20 TH. Please set aside a few minutes to do your homework or you will receive an INCOMPLETE on your report card. Sister Vincent Marie CADA House Request CADA House of Mankato has requested Prayer Shawls for the women and children who reside there. If you have the gift of hand knitting or crocheting, please consider giving a prayer shawl to CADA House. Contact Melissa Ballman, Administrative Assistant and Volunteer Coordinator at Prayer Shawls were first introduced to CADA House last fall. The women and children love them and ask for more! The need is great and the Lord is asking for your help. The residents of CADA House need prayers of hope, healing, love, forgiveness, comfort, peace and in some cases, a restored relationship with Jesus Christ, which can be accomplished through the tangible gift of a handcrafted Prayer Shawl. Information about Prayer Shawls can be found on-line and patterns can be found in booklet form at the local craft stores or Barnes and Noble. Free patterns can also be found on-line. PAUL SUNDAY COLLECTION 10/14/12 Adult - $1, / Youth - $0 / Plate - $89.50 Greetings Fellow Parishioners, I was on retreat this past weekend with my fellow class of deacons. This was the first time that all of us had been together since ordination and, needless to say, it was great to see everyone. I attended the Mass for the beginning of the Year of Faith last Sunday at the Cathedral. Our Bishop gave a good homily setting the direction for our efforts over the next year to understand and appreciate the richness of the Catholic Faith. Here is a reflection that came to me while on retreat that I d like to share with you. Have you ever been in the presence of a powerful person: perhaps a president, governor, senator, king, dictator, or emperor? Can you imagine what it must have been like to be in the presence of Stalin, Mao, Hitler? These people exercised power over life and death for other people. If you haven t been in the presence of such a person, perhaps you can imagine how you would behave if you were in their presence. You might keep a low profile and hope you aren t noticed in any way. There might be some apprehension so that you don t draw any attention from them. If you were in their service, you might have a constant fear of falling out of favor with them and suffer for it. We are so fortunate that of all the ways that God could have revealed himself to us, he chose to do so through the person of a baby. While he is infinitely more powerful than my examples above, nobody is afraid of a baby. In fact the natural reaction to babies is to smile and love them. God could have revealed himself to us through his infinite power but we might react in a fearful manner in his presence. He didn t want that. He wanted us to love him and want a relationship with him. What better way than through the baby Jesus. He is still all powerful, but he is approachable. He not only notices all we do, he is focused on our lives and how we re living them. He is all powerful but all loving as well and ready to forgive us and give us the gifts and graces we need to get closer to him. As we begin this Year of Faith, there is no better place to start than the Eucharist. The Eucharist is the source and summit of all we believe as Catholics. If you can advance in your understanding and belief in this Sacrament of Sacraments over the next year, you ll be well on your way to an increase in faith. If you don t feel it s important enough to receive it every weekend, then there is no better place for you to start examining your beliefs. The Eucharist is Christ and it is through Christ that you will share in eternal life.
