1 OUR MISSION STATEMENT: Growing In Faith Together (G.I.F.T.) Dear Parishioners, Congratulations to Joseph James Powers, son of Nick and Jennifer Powers, and Grant Martin Seehusen, son of Matthew and Amanda Seehusen, who were baptized this weekend. This last week was Teacher Appreciation Week. I apologize for not reminding you earlier, but hopefully you remembered it too. I am tremendously thankful for the excellent teachers we have at John Ireland School, and am looking forward to working with all of them again next year. We have a great gem in this school I encourage every family with elementary-aged children to consider sending their child here. Our small class size, the emphasis on faith and morals as not just a discipline but as an overall part of the curriculum sets it apart. The dedication of our faculty, too, is exceptional. All are working for so much less than what they could be paid elsewhere. Their sacrifices are easy to overlook, but would be greatly missed if they did not perform them! Thank you, faculty and staff, again and again, and thank you also to the volunteers and benefactors who help us in the mission of forming our young people in faith and knowledge. Happy Mother s Day to all mothers and mother-figures! I hope that your sons and daughters honor you as the queens you really are! Thank you, too, for your silent sacrifices in the love and concern you have shown. In Christ, Fr. Todd J. 4 World Day of Prayer for Vocations May 11, 2014 Today, the Fourth Sunday of Easter or Good Shepherd Sunday, is a special day for everyone in our parish. We celebrate World Day of Prayer for Vocations. We ask that we may be filled with joy and the Holy Spirit as we carry on the mission of Jesus, our Good Shepherd. Let us pray for one another that we may be strengthened in our Christian vocations as married and single people, priests, deacons, and religious. May our youth listen to God s call and be encouraged to respond generously.

Aluminum Can Recycling: Thank you for supporting aluminum recycling and Cans for Christ. Please place your cans into the barrels in front of the trailer. Also, please do not put glass, plastic, or garbage in the barrels. Thank you again for your wonderful cooperation and support of this project to support the youth Faith Formation program! This summer we will be sending 4 teens from our parish to attend Franciscan LEAD prior to the Steubenville North Conference. LEAD is a five-day, Christ-centered, sacrament-soaked, prayer-fueled immersion in Catholic teachings on leadership, evangelization, and discipleship. Participants will be given practical tools for developing their faith and evangelizing their friends. These teens will return to serve our entire parish, but more specifically will be witnesses and leaders to our youth. I am looking for a few generous people, with a heart for our youth, who would be willing to financially support this wonderful group of teens. Each of these teens will need to raise approximately $400 for the entire week. Please contact me if you are interested in supporting this worthy cause! heather76may@yahoo.com or God s Peace, Heather Gilbertson ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
6 CLEANING YOUR GRAVESITES AFTER MEMORIAL DAY. After June 9, the caretaker will remove all flowers not in permanent flower stands & any other items not in approved containers. All of these interfere with the safe operation of the lawnmower. Please adhere to these rules. The groundskeeper will remove any that are not in compliance. Introduction to the Cemetery Rules and Regulations: Often, when we are grieving, we cannot find words to express our losses. We have many ways other than words; for example, we place flowers at our loved ones gravesites. Then we take time to be quiet, reflective and allow a tear or two to flow to relieve our sadness. Our cemetery committee and workers are very aware of this and try to be sensitive to the placement of flowers and mementoes when mowing, cleaning and repairing our cemetery. Sometimes our floral decorations deteriorate or, if they are artificial, they can cause damage to the cemetery equipment. Could you help us keep our beautiful cemetery well maintained and suitable for prayerful and reflective visits, please? You may not be aware of our Cemetery Rules and Regulations regarding times and occasions of clean-up, etc. We include them below so that we can be sensitive to all. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ From the Calvary Cemetery Rules and Regulations; LANDSCAPING, PLANTING, AND FLORAL REGULATIONS 1. No trees, shrubbery, plants or flowers shall be planted in or transplanted into the Cemetery for decorative, memorial or any other purposes whatsoever, except by the cemetery management. Any of the above so planted will be removed by the cemetery caretaker. 2. Small bronze vases are permitted, but these must be set in cement at the same time as the marker. The cement collar will also extend three (3) inches around the base of the vase and will be part of the marker foundation. One vase will be allowed for individual markers and two for double markers. Vases may be used around monuments also. 3. Vases, urns, flower pots, plants, boxes, glass jars, cans, etc. will not be permitted on lots or graves, except that these or other appropriate decorations may be placed on lots or graves, (but not set into the ground), for Memorial Day or for such special occasions as may be designated by the cemetery management. However, all such containers and all other decorations must be removed within ten (10) days following Memorial Day or other designated occasions, after which the cemetery caretaker will dispose of all those remaining except all so-called permanent type urns or plant holders which must be incorporated within the wash of the monument or marker. 4. A three (3) day limit after each burial when all bouquets, decorations, etc. shall be removed from the grave. 5. Local cemetery management will not be liable for floral pieces, baskets, misplaced or broken flower vases or flag standards or other forms of memorials or decorations. 6. The cemetery management/caretaker will remove all floral designs, flowers (natural or artificial), or decorations of any kind from the cemetery grounds as soon as, in their judgment, these plantings and arrangements have become unsightly, dangerous, detrimental, or do not conform to the regulations. 7. No objects under 3/8 in diameter are to be placed in the ground.

You deserve all the cards, flowers, gifts and attention that come your way. Congratulations to Ben Zins who was confirmed at St. Mary s in New Ulm on May 10 as part of the Cathedral Confirmation Class. This past Wednesday, we had our end of the year potluck for the religious education program. Attendance awards were given out. An excellent meal was shared by all. The school year seems to fly by. I d like to acknowledge the catechists who give so much of themselves throughout the year. We couldn t have our program without them. They are Sarah Johnson, Melody Weber, Mary Fischer, Anne Steffen, Terry Rudenick, Kelly Mans, Ann Schwartz, Mary Kilibarda, Heidi Hinckley. I also appreciate the contributions of our substitutes, Buffy and Jerod Spilman. These people deserve our thanks. The Lesson of the Seeds: Last year we had some fun watching the muskmelons and giant sunflowers grow alongside the church by the parking lot sidewalk. The melons were delicious. We ate them over the summer and served them as part of Leanna Brown s retirement party. At the end of the year, I saved the seeds for you. As you might recall, the melons grew from compost that was put in the holes when we planted the sunflowers. We expected sunflowers and God surprised us with the melons. There is a parallel between the melon seeds and the Word of God in the Gospel. Seeds represent dormant life. The Gospel is the Good News of eternal life through Jesus Christ. The Gospel is freely given to all people and they are asked to spread the Good News to others. These seeds are given freely to you and you are encouraged to find fertile ground and plant them. Later in the summer, you ll have opportunities to bring a portion of the fruit to the parish to share with others. For starters, take some seeds and plant them to see what God gives you. At the same time, gather courage to talk with others about the Good News of Jesus Christ. As you watch the seeds grow, also watch your faith grow. Watch for future Lessons of the Seeds in the bulletin as we go into summer. Thanks to Paul and Donna Zins for helping to clean up the church grounds last Saturday. We got a good start on preparing for planting. There was still more to do going into this weekend. We want to plant the last two weekends of May. If you can help prepare for planting or help plant, please contact me. D.S.
