The Faithful Traveler: Cathedral of Mary Our Queen - Episode 8 St. Peter Access Channel 7 Wednesday, July 11-9 pm Thursday, July am St. Kateria Tekakwitha On July 14th, we celebrate the feast of the "Lily of the Mohawks." St. Kateri Tekakwitha is the first Native American woman to be canonized. Orphaned by a smallpox outbreak, Kateri survived with severe scarring and impaired eyesight. Despite tragedy, she was a devout girl at a young age, often building crosses from sticks in the woods. When she was 18, she began secret instruction in the Catholic faith with French missionaries. Her commitment to Christianity and v o w o f v i r g i n i t y w a s misunderstood and ridiculed by her fellow villagers. She escaped to a nearby mission, where she attended daily Mass, taught the children, and cared for the sick and the elderly. Sometimes the greatest misunderstandings can come from those closest to us. Like St. Kateri, God invites us to be faithful to our commitments of faith and to always respond in love.

3 A NOTE FROM FATHER Dear Parishioners, As promised last week, here s an update on St. Paul s. Thank you for you generous giving. our Sunday offerings are sufficient to pay for our ongoing needs. A quarter of my salary and other benefits are paid by St. Paul s (nothing for the house or utilities, however). In addition, we are able to give a modest increase in wages to our part time staff members. Regarding larger projects, we replaced the sidewalks around the Church and shortly will be replacing the pavement around the sidewalks. These projects total about $20,000, and are paid from the moneys from the sale of the rectory at St. Paul s (a bulk of the funds have previously been used to pay the street assessments). We also replaced the carpet in the Chruch and put vinyl tiles in the social hall. In these projects, we have addressed the requests of our safety inspector. I must admit, though, that I am concerned that our attendance in both parishes seems to be dwindling. Some might say that it is because there is not Mass offered at the preferred time, or for a variety of other reasons. If the Mass is something other than a social time (and it is), what should we do? Each Mass is an encounter with the Lord. Each is an invitation by Christ to come and follow Him. We would go out of our way to see someone famous. We would pay to go to a concert of our favorite musicians, a play or musical, or sporting event. Some might even change their sleep calendar to be up later or get up earlier to watch an event. How many woke early to watch the recent royal wedding? Perhaps Mass has become too common, to routine it is just one thing among many that claims our time. But if it is truly an encounter with the Living God, you can guarantee I will be there. Please join me! ~ In Christ, Fr. Joy and Suffering Fourteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time because of the abundance of the revelations, a thorn in the flesh was given to me, an angel of Satan, to beat me, to keep me from being too elated. 2 Corinthians 12:7 It s hard to imagine a thorn in our flesh or, certainly, to be beaten by an angel of Satan! Fortunately, we don t have to face what Paul finds himself going through in today s second reading. Yes, we all must endure pain and misery at times. But we are assured that God will help us to endure the suffering (His grace is sufficient) and that great joy awaits us. In fact, Paul tells us that if he didn t have the accompanying suffering, he would be too elated because of the joys of God s revelations. The more time that we spend in prayer and in seeking a better understanding of those revelations, the more joy-filled we will become. And when we do suffer, when we are ill, dealing with a tragedy, coping with the loss of a loved one, we can endure confidently, knowing that the power of Christ dwells within us. We appreciate your time and talent! Help Needed The Cemetery is looking for someone to help weed whip. If you are interested please contact the parish office. Catholic Daughters Next Regent meeting July 22. Harvest Festival We will be having our parish festival on September 30th. This is a great event to celebrate our parish family and get to know one another better. This event is only possible with the support of our parishioners. We are looking for a few disciples who would be willing to chair these parts of the festival: the dinner and the dining room. Please pray if God is calling you to support our parish in this way. VBS Supplies Needed This year for Vacation Bible School we need 100 ICE water bottles. We don t need the water inside, just the empty bottles. Please save your bottles and drop them off at the parish office. We are also in need of black lights to borrow. The theme this year is Shipwrecked. We are looking for anything related to a tropical beach to use to decorate. If you are able to help us out with any of these, please contact Mary Grack. Diocese Summer Youth Camps For more information go to Parish Census Update We have received back a little over 20% Parish Census Update Forms. If you did not receive one please contact the office or you can pick one up on the table in the Narthex. This is important to fill out even if you think your information is up-to-date. We switched systems last year and found out that over 300 Birthdays were missing. This information is needed in order for us to correctly fill out the Diocesan Census.
