3 A NOTE FROM FATHER Dear Parishioners, Ash Wednesday and the beginning of Lent is this week. The Church asks for fasting on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday of Lent (as a minimum) and abstaining from meat on Ash Wednesday and all Fridays of Lent (and technically, still encourages every Friday even outside of Lent). Those who are years old are to fast (one normal meal and perhaps 2 small ones - If there are medical issues regarding one s blood sugar, for example, a dispensation may be granted). All who are over 14 years old are to abstain from meat on Ash Wednesday and every Friday of Lent. Meat is considered any animal that spends a majority of its time on land. Fish and shellfish are not considered meat. Some have suggested pan sauces and even the drippings from meat do not break the abstinence. This is a means of penance, to refrain from meat as we prepare to celebrate Christ s Passion and Resurrection. So, while fish might be allowed, having lobster or a high-end seafood dinner might not be in keeping with the penitential nature of the season. What happens to Valentine s Day this year with it being Ash Wednesday? While not being a spoilsport, I point out the St. Valentine s Day is no longer celebrated in the Church in a formal way (February 14 is the feast of Ss. Cyril and Methodius). Ash Wednesday takes precedence over any saint day, so the fasting of Ash Wednesday trumps the celebration of Valentine s Day. However, as Valentine s Day is a somewhat arbitrary day to celebrate love, and I would recommend its celebration on Tuesday, the 13th, which is Mardi Gras (Fat Tuesday) in which feasting is appropriate. Last week, an was sent out inviting you to a few opportunities for spiritual growth - the Divine Mercy Consecration Preparation, the Best Lent Ever, the Wild Goose online video series, and Stations of the Cross. This last one I want to highlight the most. In the past, the school children have led stations in a wonderful way on Friday Mornings. I am aware that there are a number of people who might want to participate but employment forbids them. In addition, Friday Evening Stations allow some additional time for adoration and reconciliation. Stations will be held in the chapel, and we will use the traditional stations and the reflections for St. Alphonsus Liguori. We will begin at 6:30 pm, followed by exposition of the Blessed Sacrament and confessions, and end at 7:30 (if needed, I will return to the Confessional as long as needed). If you can only come for stations, come!!! ~ In Christ, Fr. As part of Catholic Schools Week, the students in preschool through sixth grade created birthday bags! Students decorated the bags, made cards, and brought in a variety of items needed for a birthday party. Lenten Fast and Abstinence Requirements: Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are obligatory days of fasting and abstinence for Catholics. In addition, Fridays during Lent are obligatory days of abstinence from meat. When fasting, a person is permitted to eat one full meal, as well as two smaller meals that together are not equal to a full meal. 5 CHURCH OF ST. PETER Thank You LifeTeen members and their core hosted a Souper Bowl party that consisted of a variety of soups and desserts. It was a great success and enjoyed by all. We were able to raise $600+ to support The Kitchen and their mission. The Kitchen would like to Thank the Church of St. Peter and the LifeTeen program for putting on this annual tradition. The proceeds go directly to The Kitchen to provide meals to local residents in need. The Church of St. Peter hosts a meal once a month. If you would like to volunteer please contact Mary. Small Group 33 Days to Merciful Love Group Retreat is a six-week retreat that prepares you to make a Consecration to Divine Mercy, which we will do on April 8 th (Divine Mercy Sunday). This retreat leads you through daily reflections and prayer to ponder throughout your day while meeting once per week as a group. The retreat officially begins on March 6th. Based on the book, 33 Days to Merciful Love, by Fr. Michael Gaitley, MIC, this 33 Days to Merciful Love Retreat explores the heart of St. Thérèse of Lisieux s Little Way. The book 33 Days to Merciful Love by Fr. Michael Gaitley will guide you through the process. These books will be available after Mass for purchase. As part of the retreat, we will meet weekly to learn more about the Consecration to Divine Mercy through videos from Fr. Michael Gaitley. Prior to the official start, small groups will begin meeting at the Church of St. Peter to learn more about the process and will continue meeting throughout the 33 days.
