3 A NOTE FROM FATHER Dear Parishioners, Our deepest sympathy to the Lyons Family and friends on the death of Desarae Block, and to the family and friends of Irene Hansen. May their souls rest in peace. A few weeks ago, I attended a meeting of priests and parish business managers during which Fr. Mark Steffl, the diocesan Canon Lawyer, discussed the temporal rights and responsibilities of a pastor. One of the responsibilities stressed was that those who ask, unless notoriously in opposition to the Church, are to be granted a funeral. It does not matter if they are registered or not, ultimately, because it is a matter of where they live. Needless to say, if they live within the parishes boundaries, they are entitled to a funeral. By extension, those who are from the parish previously may be entitled to a funeral all the same. This is a non-negotiable. Added into that is that appropriateness of offering a luncheon. Just as our Lord was concerned not to send people away hungry, so too we should seek to offer a meal to those who gather to mourn the death of their loved ones (this cost, of course, is covered by the family). I would be remiss if I did not thank the choir, cantors and organists, too. I always recommend the choir - it is a more rich sounding liturgy when they are present. Ultimately, though, I leave the choice to the families - if they wish for a cantor instead, we look for a cantor. I am thankful for so many that help with the luncheon and the music, and am also thankful for Audrey Schmitz and Teresa Keinlen who are sacristans for the funerals. This allows for a beautiful liturgy and comforting day for the mourners. We are always in need of people to help in the choir and the luncheon. We have had 29 deaths (3 services were held elsewhere and one is pending) and 25 funerals since July 1, as I said this last weekend, it is rare that any one us were not affected in some way. This is all the more reason to live Advent well The Lord is coming, but are we prepared? This week, we mark the halfway point, and so I will wear the rose vestments which remind us the joy we ought to have to be so close to the end of this penitential season. Because we only use it twice a year and the rose vestment I use is mine, I did not purchase a deacon s dalmatic, so we will not match. ~ In Christ, Fr. 5 Group Retreat In Consoling the Heart of Jesus group retreat we will learn about God's infinite mercy and how we can give him joy, consoling his heart, by accepting his love and trusting in him completely. Through videos by Fr. Michael Gaitley and group discussions, we'll discover how suffering can actually help us grow spiritually closer to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. PETER Growing Together in a Stewardship Coffee and Donuts Sunday Coffee and donuts is a great idea! It is a great way to work on hospitality and find a way for people to meet each other. Coffee and donuts sounded like a good idea and not too much trouble compared to what it would be worth to the parish. Thank you to Joan Werner for scheduling the volunteers, and to all the volunteers who help with making the coffee, serving, and cleaning up after. It is a tremendous service. Thank you, too, to all who come. It is especially fun to see so many children and young families. At the same time, if this is a way to meet people, we need to challenge ourselves to do just that. Sit with new faces, invite them to join you, introduce them to your friends. This helps us become a community that is hospitable and welcoming. One more thing, if you see a donation basket on the table, be sure to toss in some money. While the parish is paying for the donuts and coffee, your support allows us to keep the costs down. Farmers can qualify for income and selfemployment tax savings on raised grain if the unsold grain is gifted to your parish. The grain must be delivered to an elevator and the actual storage ticket should be given to the parish. In order to qualify for the tax savings, it s critical that the parish sells the grain and not the person gifting the grain.
