3 A NOTE FROM FATHER Dear Parishioners, It has come to my attention that some parishioners of St. Paul s are concerned that I will transfer money to the Church of St. Peter. This is, in one word, illegal. The finances of the parishes are separate, as well as each cemetery. St. Paul s pays a proportion of the Faith Formation expenses based on youth involved from St. Paul s (currently about 10%). St. Paul's also pays 25% of my salary and medical insurance. I am not getting reimbursed for mileage, continuing education, and groceries, but if I were (as technically I should be) St. Paul s would pay 25%. Hopefully this clarifies the separate finances. This week, we mark the 50th anniversary of the release of the encyclical Humanae Vitae (July 25, 1968). Too often, this document has been vilified and ignored, but I find it freeing and prophetic. Blessed Paul VI speaks of the great dignity of conjugal love and bearing of children. While he rejected a commission that proposed a change in the tradition of the Church regarding artificial means of birth control, he did not do so lightly. He lays out the doctrinal framework that based on the nature of God s love, which is open and total. Because of this, the love of husband and wife is also to be open and total, and it is expressed in unitive and procreative ways. He recommends that couples practice natural family planning - if they have reasons tempered in justice, they may refrain from sexual activity in their mutually fertile times (this is not the rhythm method, but rather scientifically verified means). In chapter 17, he prophetically writes that artificial contraception opens the way to marital infidelity, lowering of moral standards, objectification of women, and forced contraception on the part of nations. While not explicitly mentioning abortion, one sees readily his concern there. He acknowledges that this is not an easily accepted position. He gives some antidotes - he reminds us of the value of self-discipline and chastity. This encyclical is one of the building blocks on which St. John Paul II based his Theology of the Body, which gives a wider understanding of who we are as human beings, made in God s image and likeness. As we see the whole nature of sex, sexuality, gender, and all sorts of questions that could not have even been thought of 50 years ago, I encourage every adult to read it and take Blessed Paul VI s words to heart. ~ In Christ, Fr. PETER In response to Mary Healy's presentation at the Bishop Lucker Lecture this spring, our parish is starting a Healing Ministry for lay people to pray for healing over others. Jesus says "These signs will accompany those who believe: in my name they will drive out demons, they will speak new languages. They will pick up serpents [with their hands], and if they drink any deadly thing, it will not harm them. They will lay hands on the sick, and they will recover. - Mark 16: Deacon Mike McKeown (from the office of Healing Ministry at the Diocese of New Ulm) has trained some of our parishioners how to pray for this type of healing. What has the Lord healed through intercessory prayer for healing? Chronic pain, degenerative eyesight, broken bones, trigger finger, lower back pain, color blindness, knee pain, headaches, etc... This ministry is mainly focusing on physical healing. Does everyone get healed? Sometimes God gives physical healing and sometimes He gives inner peace and healing. Jesus sometimes chooses to heal physical problems and sometimes He doesn't, but we do know that we are more likely to see healing if we ask for healing. When is the Healing Ministry Team available? We will have teams available once a month after the Saturday evening Mass and after most Sunday morning Masses. Teams will be available in the chapel after Mass. Listen to the announcements before Mass to know if a team is available after Mass. What does the prayer consist of? The team will ask you a few questions about what you need healed, then they will pray over you. Then they will ask you to test to see if the condition is still there. If there is some improvement, they may continue to pray some more as time allows. This usually takes 5-10 minutes total. How do I ask for prayers? Just stop in the chapel after Mass and they will be ready to pray with you. You can also contact Mary Grack at the parish office and she can arrange a few prayer team members to pray with you if you cannot meet after Mass. 16th Sunday in Ordinary Time 5
