1 OUR MISSION STATEMENT: Growing In Faith Together (G.I.F.T.) In this Sunday s Gospel, Mark 10:40-53, we meet Bartimaeus, a blind man; a roadside beggar, and certainly one of the least and the last that Jesus speaks about. In the time of Jesus, physical blindness was a curse, and sure proof that one was a great sinner, deserving of punishment. Today, however, there are many dramatic stories of blind people who recover their sight as a result of surgery and/or organ donor gifts. Nothing, however, can be more dramatic than a spiritual healing of blindness, as we witness in Bartimaeus. Bartimaeus was a nobody, with no name of his own. He was known only as Bar Timaeus, the son of a man named Timaeus. He made his living by sitting along the road leading to Jerusalem and the temple. Beggars didn t move around much. They stayed in the same place so that people would get to know them and help them. Evidently, his cloak was his only shelter. On this particular day, when Jesus meets Bartimaeus, He had been walking along with His disciples, who were arguing and bickering over who would be first in the kingdom, and who would sit at Jesus right hand, and left hand in the Kingdom. And, they just didn t get it! They still lacked faith in Jesus and the Kingdom He had come to establish. They couldn t see what had happened in the past and what was happening right before their eyes. Their self-interest and self-absorption blinded them to Who and what Jesus was all about. But not Bartimaeus! He recognized Jesus as The Son of David, and the Master; titles that were given to the Man of God, and the Messiah. But, the story isn t really about physical blindness; it s about seeing with the eyes of faith. Jesus physically heals Bartimaeus blindness, and says to him, Your Faith has saved you, drawing a stark contrast between the blind ambitions of the disciples and the faith of this roadside beggar. Bartimaeus throws off his cloak, the one possession he has for his protection and shelter, gets up and follows Jesus. What areas of blindness do I need healing from in order to see the Messiah in my life? What protecting cloaks do I have that prevent me from seeing where Jesus is leading me? When Jesus asks me, What do you want me to do for you? will I answer as Bartimaeus did, Master, I want to see! And once my blindness is healed, will I jump up and follow Jesus? ================================================================================= WEEKLY SCHEDULE October 28 November 4, th Sunday in Ordinary Time, October AM Mass (+Marcella Lucas) 10 AM Faith Formation Preschool Gr AM Coffee & Rolls, Social Hall 7 PM LifeTeen, Social Hall Monday No Service 9 AM Bible Study, Family Room Tuesday 8 AM Mass (+Raymond Mulvehill), Chapel 7 PM Administrative Council, Room 127 Wednesday 8:15 AM School Prayer, Church 6:30 PM All Saints Eve Mass (+Ashley Leonard) Thursday, All Saints Day 10:45 AM School Mass (+Francis Dauer), Church 1 10 PM Eucharistic Adoration, Chapel 3:30 PM Confessions, Chapel 6:30 PM All Saints Day Mass at Nicollet Friday 8 AM 1 st Friday Mass (+Jerry Regenscheid), Chapl Saturday DMA Kick-Off Weekend 5 PM Mass (Parish Family) 31 st Sunday in Ordinary Time, November 4 DMA Kick-Off Weekend 10 AM Mass (+Bud Wolfe) 10 AM Faith Formation Preschool Gr AM Coffee & Rolls, Social Hall 7 PM LifeTeen, Social Hall PLEASE REMEMBER: SATURDAY MASS TIME CHANGES TO 4:00 PM ON NOVEMBER 10.

7 Church of St. Paul October 28, 2012 Pastor - Fr. Philip Schotzko Parish Office/Rectory Priest in Residence - Fr. Ed Ardolf Parish Hall Parish Administrative Assistant - Office Hours: Tuesday - Thursday Deacon Steven Spilman 9:00 am to 12:00 pm CHURCH OF ST. PAUL SUNDAY COLLECTION 10/21/12 - Adult - $ / Youth - $5.00 / Plate - $ Greetings Fellow Parishioners, Will our faith save us like the blind man in today s Gospel? I hope so. It s a good opportunity to explore how we are blind in our lives and how Jesus has the power to make us see. Perhaps we re blind to the needs of others in our families and communities. Perhaps we re blind to the suffering of others. Perhaps we re blind to the richness of the Catholic Church and the wisdom and love that lies behind all of its teachings, choosing instead to see only those teachings that fit our paradigm for life. Perhaps we re blind to ourselves: blind to our sinfulness and how much we need God s love in our lives. In all ways the answer to our blindness is Christ. He can restore our sight and give us the graces that we need to see and accept the truth whatever it may be at this moment for us. There is no greater love in our life than the love of Christ. Don t let yourself be blind to that truth or you shall never find true happiness. Peace to you. Deacon Steve As you might notice, the repair work has started on our hail claim. The rectory and detached garage have new roofs on them now. More repairs are coming. The 2012 Diocesan Ministries Appeal packets will be sent to all parishioners the week of November 5. Commitment Sunday will be November 17 and 18. You will be hearing more about the DMA as we move closer to that weekend. The theme of the Appeal is taken from 1 Corinthians 3:9 For We are God s Coworkers. We are now about half way through the 3-Year Christ Our Life Capital Campaign. Plans are in place to break ground for the new pastoral center next spring thanks to the generosity of over 5000 donors from around the diocese. We re not at our goal yet as a diocese or as a parish. The diocese is close to 90% of its goal and our parish is at 70% thanks to the generosity of 22 donors. It s not too late to make a donation or pledge. Although it seems that there are many demands on our finances at the present time, don t be discouraged by it. We know our parish and our diocese have needs. We also know that our city may have needs as well for the street projects. We must hold fast to our faith that God provides and pray for our Church. We must do what we can but not despair over what we can t do. The love of God is with us always and He will provide.
