5 May 29, 2016 Page 5 Homiletic starters and scriptural reflection points for each day of the month Mon., May 30: 2 Peter 1:2-7; Mark 12:1-12 He will come, put the tenants to death, and give the vineyard to others. As we in the United States observe Memorial Day, it strikes me that, like the tenants in the parable, we re slow to learn that violence begets violence. Is it naive to imagine a world where we settle our differences without the horrible cost of violence? The most common response is some version of Not when we re dealing with them. And I get it. When someone is doing bad things to helpless people, the powerful have a responsibility to step in. Yet I long for a world that values today s instruction from St. Peter, and it is my prayer for all the tenants of the vineyard: Let us make every effort to supplement our faith with virtue, virtue with knowledge, knowledge with self-control, selfcontrol with endurance, endurance with devotion, devotion with mutual affection, mutual affection with love. Tues., May 31: Zep 3:14-18a or Rom 12:9-16; Luke 1:39-56 Anticipate one another in showing honor. This little phrase from today s first reading is part of St. Paul s instruction to the Christians in Rome. It could be titled How to Live Together. One might think that after a visit from an angel and the news that she is bearing a Miracle Child, Mary might hold court and expect visitors to pay her homage. But she sets out on an 80-mile journey, presumably by donkey, to honor and attend to Elizabeth. What if just for a day we practiced this kind of attentiveness and honored others first? There would be some who would take advantage of us, but it still might make for a more peaceful life within our homes and among the nations. Pray for us, Mary, as we try to live as you lived. Wed., June 1: 2 Tim 1:1-3, 6-12; Mark 12:18-27 Are you not misled because you do not know the power of God? One of the Sadducees disagreements with the Pharisees had to do with the resurrection of the dead. The Sadducees didn t believe in it. To both trap and ridicule Jesus, the Sadducees posited a ludicrous situation: seven brothers who marry the same woman, each one after the death of the previous brother. Whose wife is she in the (ridiculous, impossible, so-called) afterlife? Isn t this what we do when we want to make an other belief system seem absurd? And yet, as the Queen said to Alice, we believe six impossible things before breakfast. Perhaps tolerance for the ridiculous is a step toward understanding even toward world peace. For the grace of faith and respect for the faith of others, we The word of God is not chained. From Bernstein s Mass: You can smother hope before it s risen, watch it wizen like a gourd, but you cannot imprison the Word of the Lord God s word is truth, and truth lives on after lies die. God s word is joy, and even in the midst of sorrow and sin, joy finds a foothold and flourishes. God s word is love, and love abounds even as enemies forget why they were at war. But it is a struggle to remember, especially when the very people and institutions we rely on seem to have lost their good sense. So we wait, in silent treason, until Reason is restored; we wait for the Season of the Word of the Lord. Perhaps the best thing a Christian can do is stand firm in the radical middle and witness to reason. For steadfastness, we NINTH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME Fri., June 3: Ezek 34:11-16; Rom 5:5b-11; Luke 15:3-7 Solemnity of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus The love of God has been poured out into our hearts. I find this devotion suggests a piety I don t relate to very well, not to mention the Really. Bad. Art. So when I find myself reacting like that, I turn to research and usually find something to respect and embrace about what I would otherwise ignore. What is this Sacred Heart of Jesus? It s about his humanity his ability to love perfectly, but still humanly, the way we all wish we could love. What prevents us? Weariness. Selfishness. Holding on to hurt instead of forgiving. From Pope Francis: If our hearts are closed, if our hearts are made of stone, the stones find their way into our hands and we are ready to throw them. For open, welcoming, loving hearts, we Sat., June 4: 2 Tim 4:1-8; Luke 2:41-51 His mother kept all these things in her heart. In the midst of World War II, Pope Pius XII put the whole world under the protection of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, and in 1944 decreed that the universal church should celebrate this memorial. What did Mary keep in her heart? Things that couldn t be understood, but would be explained later. The suffering endured today, the meaning of which may be revealed in God s time. It s not an unfamiliar position for any mother. We look at this little child who grows away from us faster than we can prepare ourselves and then they are no longer ours to protect, but God s, and we can only pray for them and hold them in our hearts. For hearts big enough to hold uncertainty and remain faithful, we Thurs., June 2: 2 Tim 2:8-15; Mark 12:28-34
