3 July 3, 2016 Page 3 St. Helen s Religious Education Office is now accepting registrations for the school year. Office hours are Tuesday Thursday from 12:30-3:00PM. The fee for one child is $75.00, and the fee for 2 or more children is $ All new registrants will need to provide a copy of their Baptism Certificate. For more information please call Policies Regarding Infant Baptism at St. Helen Parish Parents seeking Baptism for their children who live within the territory of St. Helen Parish are asked to register as members of the parish before requesting an initial interview for Baptism. Registration is easily done at the parish office anytime during business hours. Parents seeking Baptism for their children who live outside the territory of St. Helen Parish are asked to obtain a letter from the parish in which they live authorizing the Baptism to take place at St. Helen. Initial meetings with parents seeking Baptism for their children will normally take place on the second Wednesday of each month from 7:00 9:00PM and on the fourth Saturday of each month from 10:30AM 12:30PM. Congratulations to Nano Nagle Award Winners Joseph Tominelli of St. Helen Catholic Academy, and Joseph Bruno of St. Helen s Religious Education Program! These two students received the Nano Nagle Award last weekend for their service to Church, school and community. This award is named in honor of Honoria (Nano) Nagle, the foundress of the Sisters of the Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Nano spent and risked her life teaching and serving the poorest of the poor in Ireland. TD BANK AFFINITY PROGRAM There is now a program in place at TD Bank where one can simply name Saint Helen as a beneficiary to a bonus based on the sum total of those who are associated to Saint Helen Parish. It costs nothing for the customer, but benefits the parish greatly. We encourage you to participate in this program. Anthony has resumed the Wednesday Scripture classes beginning at 9:45AM in the Church Meeting Room. All are invited. Rosary for Peace.New Place, New Time The Rosary for Peace, sponsored by Saint Helen Secular Franciscan Fraternity, takes place in the Church at 6:45 PM every Wednesday. The group prays for our Blessed Mother s intercession to end violence (domestic, civil, national) and the persecution of Christians throughout the world. All parishioners are invited to join us in praying for an end to violence and persecution. Anyone willing to lead a decade of the Rosary in a language other than English is welcome. Catholic Charities Senior Center Events Every Friday, from 1:00-2:30PM the Center will have Karaoke Every Friday, from 1:00-2:30PM the Center will have Karaoke. All seniors are invited. Every Wednesday, from 1:15-2:15PM the Center will have Zumba classes for seniors, a very good form of exercise. Every Wednesday, from 10:30-11:30AM the Center is introducing the latest craze: Adult Coloring (all materials provided). Come and join the fun! 5 July 3, 2016 Page 5 Homiletic starters and scriptural reflection points for each day of the month Mon., July 4: Hosea 2:16, 17c-18, 21-22; Matt 9:18-26 When Jesus arrived at the official s house he said, Go away! The girl is not dead but sleeping. Two people in need, one a woman who had been bleeding for years, the other the daughter of an official. We re not told this in Matthew s Gospel, but Mark and Luke both identify the official as Jairus, a leader of the synagogue. It must have been risky for him to go to Jesus and then Jesus was interrupted by the woman with the hemorrhage. But eventually, Jairus and Jesus make their way to his home, only to learn that Jairus daughter has died. Jesus takes her by the hand and she rises, and news of this spread throughout all the land. Lord Jesus, bring new life to the places inside us that we thought were dead. Tues., July 5: Hosea 8:4-7, 11-13; Matt 9:32-38 At the sight of the crowds, his heart was moved with pity for them because they were troubled and abandoned, like sheep without a shepherd. Sheep and shepherds show up regularly in the Bible, beginning in Genesis, where Abel is described as a keeper of sheep. Moses and David were both shepherds. Shepherds were among the first to hear the good news of Jesus birth. We may or may not have much knowledge of sheep and shepherds, but both were an important part of the lives of our ancestors in the faith. It is not surprising that God is often described as a shepherd, and in John s Gospel, Jesus calls himself the Good Shepherd. For your care, guidance, protection and love, we give you thanks, O God. Wed., July 6: Hosea 10:1-3, 7-8, 12; Matt 10:1-7 Jesus summoned his Twelve disciples and gave them authority over unclean spirits and to cure every disease and every illness. These verses from Matthew s Gospel are sometimes named the discipleship job description. The disciples are called, given particular instructions, and sent to carry out Jesus work. We are those disciples now, and we are called to continue the work of Jesus in the world today. No matter what we do, we are to be building the kingdom of God in this particular place and time. Guide us every day, O God, as we go about our work of being Christ s disciples. Jesus said to his Apostles: As you go, make this proclamation: The Kingdom of heaven is at hand. The kingdom of heaven is at hand. Really? Where? Is the kingdom at hand where you live? I confess, sometimes it s difficult to notice those glimpses of the kingdom. Our world is so full of discord, violence, intolerance and fear; the voices of hope, peace, justice and love are dismissed and ignored. So how can we proclaim the kingdom of heaven? Better yet, how can we live God s kingdom here and now? Grant us wisdom and courage for the living of these days. FOURTEENTH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME Fri., July 8: Hosea 14:2-10; Matt 10:16-23 Do not worry about how you are to speak or what you are to say. You will be given at that moment what you are to say. For those of us who are preachers, these words are a tremendous comfort and promise. But of course I worry and I always prepare; I ve never been able to just wing it. Even so, the Holy Spirit still turns up, often in surprising ways. Someone will comment on something they heard in a sermon that I don t think I said. And I m especially grateful on those difficult occasions when I just don t have the words to comfort a grieving family. Yes, these words of Jesus were first addressed to the disciples as they were sent out, and he was brutally honest about the persecution they might face. Even though most of us do not know what it s like to be persecuted for our faith, it s still comforting to know that the Spirit will lead and guide us in our discipleship. For the Spirit who orks in and through us, we give thanks. Sat., July 9: Isa 6:1-8; Matt 10:24-33 Here I am send me! Isaiah encountered God in a likely place: the temple. But Isaiah s experience is nothing short of terrifying. Smoke fills the temple. Veiled angels fly around. The temple itself shakes on its foundations. I suspect if any of that happened to us, we d be out the door in a minute. But Isaiah is stunned, newly aware of the mystery and majesty of God and his own sinfulness. He confesses that he is a man of unclean lips. In response, one of the angels performs a ritual of purification and announces that his sin is forgiven. After all that, he hears God s voice: Whom shall I send? Who will go for us? Even though he could not know where God s call would lead, Isaiah responds, Here I am, send me! May we hear and respond to your call, O God; send us where you need us to go. Thurs., July 7: Hosea 11:1-4, 8e-9; Matt 10:7-15
