The envelopes are not mailed through the rectory. Envelopes are mailed through a Church envelope company. I have used this envelope company in previous parishes and found it extremely reliable. The difficulty I have found in the past, has been with the U.S. Postal service; the current issue that parishioners are experiencing I still need to get to the bottom of. Please realize there are envelopes provided inside the Church for situations such as this. I am sorry for the inconvenience, but the situation is very much beyond my control so I thank you in advance for your patience, understanding, and continuing support. As for those who have complained that if they do not receive envelopes they will stop donating to the parish... this is tantamount to saying to a loved one that the card store has run out of birthday cards... so no gift this year! Policies Regarding Infant Baptism at St. Helen Parish Parents seeking Baptism for their children who live within the territory of St. Helen Parish are asked to register as members of the parish before requesting an initial interview for Baptism. Registration is easily done at the parish office anytime during business hours. Parents seeking Baptism for their children who live outside the territory of St. Helen Parish are asked to obtain a letter from the parish in which they live authorizing the Baptism to take place at St. Helen. Initial meetings with parents seeking Baptism for their children will normally take place on the second Wednesday of each month from 7:00 9:00PM and on the fourth Saturday of each month from 10:30AM 12:30PM. MAY JUNE 2016 Mornings of Preparation Required Before a Baptism: (All begin at the 11:00AM Mass and continue in the Msgr. The 8th Annual South Queens Juvenile Diabetes Walk-a-thon to Cure Diabetes, sponsored by the International Society of S.S. Cosma and Damiano, will be held on Saturday, June 4th at the Ave Maria Catholic Academy School grounds (formerly Our Lady of Grace School, located at 101st St. & 159th Ave.) Registration will begin at, and Walk begins at 10:00AM. 5 May 22, 2016 Page 5 Homiletic starters and scriptural reflection points for each day of the month Mon., May 23: 1 Peter 1:3-9; Mark 10:17-27 You are lacking in one thing. Each of us has something different that holds us back from fully following Jesus, but these things are all the same at their core: We lack a singular focus on God. We follow both the commandments and the demands of the world. We try to please both God and everyone else around us. We want the best of both heaven and earth. What we often fail to realize is that if we put God first, the rest falls into place. There s no need to feel sorrow if we have many possessions. Instead, we should rejoice that we have abundant resources to share. If we submit to God, we find ourselves seeking every chance to serve his people. May we strive for the glories of heaven, as we are generous and just stewards of the gifts of this earth. Tues., May 24: 1 Peter 1:10-16; Mark 10:28-31 But many that are first will be last, and the last will be first. There s often a significant gap between the Lord s call and the result we think our response should bring. We may willingly take on the role of servant, yet then bemoan, like Peter, how nice guys finish last. We simply have to accept Jesus counterintuitive commands. We have to be willing to take the long view, which, in our society of immediate gratification, is indeed a challenge. More than anything else, we must realize that we ve already received countless gifts of grace, love and mercy. Jesus gave his life for us. What more do we need? Lord, help us to be trusting, faithful and grateful. Wed., May 25: 1 Peter 1:18-25; Mark 10:32-45 Love one another intensely from a pure heart. A Greek proverb states, A society grows great when old men plant trees whose shade they know they shall never sit in. We do not expect to see personal benefit from love. It s not about us. There s no private gain or authority that comes from it. Its impact may not be visible for a long time, if ever. But we re called to do it anyway to love beyond reason, to give without question, to sacrifice without anticipation of reward. Our love is not to be earned, rationed or awarded only to those who deserve it. It s to be lavished freely, unexpectedly and unceasingly. Let us love one another as God loves us. Master, I want to see. The bright lights, flash and glitter of our personal desires blind us to what should be most visible. We are fortunate when we realize that we re wandering in darkness or chasing some fleeting shiny object. Let us pray that, in those situations, we have the courage of Bartimaeus: that we to refuse to be silenced, and that we call out for the Lord s pity and healing. May we seek the guidance of one like Saint Philip Neri, whose memorial we celebrate today. Known for his humility, humor and holiness as a confessor, he had the gift of guiding others to cut through their illusions and to see the Lord s will for them. Open our eyes, Lord. EIGHTH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME Fri., May 27: 1 Peter 4:7-13; Mark 11:11-26 Have faith in God. Jesus tells us that everything we ask for in prayer will be ours. We may doubt his presence or power when things don t go our way but before casting uncertainty on the Lord, we need to look hard at the trust we place in God and the generosity we show toward others. Are we just praying for personal desires as if God is a dispenser of goods and services? Do we expect God to meet our needs without any meaningful interaction? Holding grievances limits our ability to connect with Jesus. We bar him from entering fully into our hearts. That doesn t leave much room for any significant engagement. We cannot fully receive him or his many graces if we re unwilling to open ourselves. Grant us, Lord, unreserved faith. Sat., May 28: Jude 1:17, 20b-25; Mark 11:27-33 By what authority are you doing these things? When the chief priests, scribes and elders try to trick Jesus with their questions, he turns the tables on them with one question of his own. Their fears, their desire to please the crowd and their lack of conviction leave them uncertain and trip them up. If we don t trust that our actions are rooted in God, we ll be equally unsuccessful. Our work must have a heavenly origin and should clearly reflect its divine source. The mission and meaning do not change based on the audience or the potential risks. If we re truly acting under the Lord s authority, it shouldn t matter who asks the questions. Give us the courage, Lord, to preach your truth. Thurs., May 26: 1 Peter 2:2-5, 9-12; Mark 10:46-52
