Please check the parish Facebook for updates on the work. In the unexpected event that a funeral should need to take place, the option of use of Fr. Dooley Hall or Our Lady of Grace will be presented to the family. All Funeral Masses at Our Lady of Grace for St. Helen s parishioners will be celebrated by priests from St. Helen. We apologize in advance for the inconvenience construction will present to all of our lives in the next few months. GOOD SHEPHERD STATUE We would like to thank Marge Rosina, who kept the statue this past week. Anyone interested in keeping the statue in their home and praying for vocations for one week should contact the Rectory. St. Helen s Purgatorial Society Mass Starting this month, all parishioners will have the opportunity to enroll the names of loved ones in the Purgatorial Society. The Purgatorial Society Mass will be held on the last Friday of each month. The offer ing to be enr olled in the Purgatorial Society is $120 per name (a total of 12 Masses for the year will be said for your loved one). Aside from listing one name, a husband and wife together, or a family name is also acceptable. Having a Purgatorial Society is wonderful way of living out the Scriptures and will be a relief for those who desire to have their loved ones remembered with prayers all year long at God s Altar. Please stop in at the Rectory if you are interested in having a loved one enrolled in the Purgatorial Society. The first Purgatorial Mass will be held Friday, January 27, 2016! The Order of Franciscans Secular meet on the 3rd Saturday of every month in St. Helen s Rectory after the 9AM Mass. Come and learn more about the Franciscan way of life.
2 January 22, 2017 Page 2 UPDATE ON CHURCH RENOVATION #3 The second dumpster has been filled, the rugs are but a memory, the floors are bare and dumpster #3 will arrive soon! A cement truck visited the parish this week and filled in the "pit" where the organ once was placed. This location will now include new pews. The new organ will be placed where the usher closet once stood. The walls to the usher closets and confessionals have been removed to the studs and the bricks where the shrine area once stood have also been removed, but will be saved in the event we need bricks. This entire section of the Church will be gutted and filled with pews and a new shrine area with new candles. This area will provide additional seating for 60+ souls. The sacristy remains untouched. On the other side of the Church (close to Padre Pio) the sheetrock wall where the Tree of Life once was located, has been removed as well as the sheetrock walls and the kitchenette in the meeting room, exposing a cinder block wall. Eventually, the entire wall will be taken down, including the entire vestibule area at that side entrance, this will create a considerable amount of space for additional seating. This is accomplished through structural engineering. The removal of that wall will require a new header (beam) to support the roof. This beam will be lifted into place. The former meeting room will include two confessionals, an additional shrine area with candles, and room for an additional 100 people! This again is in line with the primary objective of this renovation; that is, maximizing seating capacity within the current structure. When all is said and done, an additional 36% of pew space will be added to the Church. An increase of 36% amounts to seating for 166 people... or your average attendance at the 8.00 AM Mass on Sunday! As I mentioned, in another update, the Tree of Life will have a more prominent place in the Church, and will be visible to a considerably higher number of people. I can safely assume the pews have arrived to North Carolina, as we have received a bill. Remember, the pews are in good condition, and therefore will be reused, but will be refinished in a darker tone (most likely mahogany) to contrast with the light hues of the Terrazzo floor. Other colors such as walnut, honey and some other color I can not pronounce or spell, have also been presented. Mahogany is more in line with the wood tones already present in the Church. A number of new pews will be fabricated identically to what already exists in the Church, to fill the new seating areas. Any and all marble that will be used has been cut and is being shipped. Colors such as Botticino Marble, Athena Red Marble, as well as Bright White Marble are but a few of the new colors that will be utilized... all of these colors will also be incorporated into the new flooring as well. These colors blend very well with many wood tones that currently exist in the church. These colors can be seen using a quick google image search. At this point we have not encountered any major set backs and all is going according to schedule. Keep praying! As for Father Dooley Hall, there have some minor difficulties with the sound system, we discovered another switch to turn it on and off...so when it wasn't working it was simply the flip of a switch. The heat on the other hand has been unbearable. Unfortunately the heating system is not thermostat controlled, its either on or off. The hall is warmest in the front and cooler in the back... I guess all I can say is sit according to your preference, as for the deacons, servers and priest... we have no choice! Remember, the choice to have the renovation during the winter months was predicated on the fact that the Hall is not air-conditioned. This week I expect to have samples of the Terrazzo and hope to have them up on Facebook when they arrive. I look forward to updating you each week and please do not hesitate to contact me with any questions. Fr. Colamaria P.S. As of Tuesday morning, approval for work permits have been issued by the City of New York!!!
