The Purgatorial Society Mass will be held on the last Friday of each month. The offering to be enrolled in the Purgatorial Society is $120 per name (a total of 12 Masses for one year will be said for your loved one). Aside from listing one name, a husband and wife together, or a family name is also acceptable. Having a Purgatorial Society is wonderful way of living out the Scriptures and will be a relief for those who desire to have their loved ones remembered with prayers all year long at God s Altar. Please stop in at the Rectory if you are interested in having a loved one enrolled in the Purgatorial Society. The next Purgatorial Society Mass will be held Friday, September 29, 2017.

2 September 24, 2017 Page 2 Introibo ad Altare Dei, ad Deum qui laetificat iuventutem meam. I will go up to the Altar of God, to God who brings joy to my youth. In the last month or so, the new Sanctuary of Saint Helen has brought much joy to parishioners both young and old. Even the front page of the local newspaper, covering the Mass of Consecration, had the headline... "Helen of Joy" (a play on Helen of Troy) on its front cover! The joy continues each time I walk into the church and most especially when I approach the Altar to say Mass. The Latin words... spoken by priests to God for centuries are always on my lips...as I approach the Sanctuary. Now that many of us have become acquainted with this new Sanctuary, I will be publishing a series of explanations in the bulletin describing in detail the meaning of what we visually encounter as we enter into this new House of God. These reflections will be both descriptive and spiritual in nature. I pray that in the next few months these reflections will broaden your understanding of the new interior of your parish home... and God's House. (Unfortunately, these updates are limited to one full page in the bulletin and space in the bulletin... so these reflections will probably take a few months to cover all aspects of the renovation). So here we go... When anyone enters the Church for the first time, it is immediately apparent that things are different. Your eyes are drawn to the Sanctuary, to the façade soaring on the back wall (reredos). The wood, the marble, the crucifix blending together as a depiction of all Catholic worship. For what takes place at every Altar throughout the world is in fact the unbloodied sacrifice of the Cross. Every Mass is a sacrifice of the new covenant given to us by Jesus Christ. Every Mass is not some re-enactment of the Last Supper, but the command of Jesus given the night before he died on the Cross, when He told his disciples, "Do this in memory of Me." That façade is known in church architecture as a reredos. Many have commented that it looks like the churches seen in Rome. While it may be true that the reredos of Saint Helen has the semblance of some Roman Churches... the reason for building it as you see it...comes from something more familiar. If you look closely at the front of the Altar you will see the depiction of the Last Supper. It is a wood cut that copies DaVinci's Last Supper and was used on the original Altar that once stood in Father Dooley Hall. But I invite you to look even closer at the image of the Last Supper. Behind the figure of Christ seated at table are three walls. The wall directly behind Christ is flat and squarely behind Christ, while the other two walls seem to fan out at an angle. Now look at the Sanctuary and you will see the exact same thing... a rear wall with two walls that fan out into the Church. When I noticed this I asked the liturgical designer to use this Last Supper motif as a springboard for all decisions about the sanctuary. Thus, the reredos and the two smaller ones (with Mary and the Sacred Heart) were put to paper. The original drawings did not include an arch in the center reredos. This is where DaVinci's Last Supper comes in again. If you look closely behind the figure of Christ in the Last Supper, there are three windows. Two are square whilst the one directly behind the figure of Christ has an arch. Thus, the arch was included in the new design that you see today. Christ is the literally the center of our Church and our lives and this is given a special dignity by the use of special architecture... the arch. In a church where the ceiling is filled with straight lines and is accompanied by the straight lines of brick, an arch interrupts the visual field to say... something special dwells here. That something is, in fact, Someone who dwells with His presence in the Tabernacle, drawing all of us young and old, to worship and adore Him. That arch is supported by Doric pillars. In architecture, there are three common styles of pillars; Doric, Ionic, and Corinthian. Doric columns have been used in Temple building since 8th century BC! The Doric pillars that meet the arch have multiple crown moldings... thus giving it that "Roman" feeling. These large, wooden, Doric columns are mahogany and were cut from trees in Maine. The Doric columns are repeated in miniature on the two side reredoses of Mary and the Sacred Heart and repeated in the Baptismal Font, Pulpit, Altar and base for the Tabernacle. The choice of color for the wood was so to compliment the already existing ceiling. It is not meant to match... but compliment the already existing wood tones in the Church. I believe I am about to run out of room for this update. Next week, I will focus on the Pelican, the crucifix, the shields, the Lamb and the tabernacle. Fr. Colamaria

3 September 24, 2017 Page 3 Did You Know Every ten minutes, someone is added to the national transplant waiting list. On average, 20 people die each day while waiting for a transplant. One organ donor can save eight lives. The success rate for organ transplants is between 80 and 90 percent. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 10 percent of American adults about 20 million people have chronic kidney disease. 600,000 are on Dialysis. 100,000 are on the waiting list for a kidney transplant. Yet only 16,000 transplants are done each year. In New York less than 13 percent of adults are organ donors (national average is 45%). Did You Know There are various ways of Kidney Donation: A kidney can be donated by a living donor. Only one kidney is all that is needed to live a normal and healthy life. The Good Lord gave use two as a backup. A kidney can be donated, like other organs, when the donor has passed away, by registering with the national listing called UNOS. OR, should you find yourself in the unfortunate situation having a loved one who is about to pass and is being removed from life support, you can donate their organs directly to someone of your choice. This could save the life of a relative, friend or neighbor. My wife and I have been active members of St. Helen Parish for more than 38 years. We have been Ministers of Holy Communion for more than 25 years. Our sons received all their Sacraments at St. Helen, were Altar Servers, and attended St. Helen School. I have been on dialysis for over 5 years. I am in desperate need of a kidney transplant. I appeal to you to pray for me and everyone who is waiting for an organ transplant. If you are considering a donation of a kidney, I ask you to please consider my need. Rosary for Peace New Place, New Time The Rosary for Peace, sponsored by the Saint Helen Secular Franciscan Fraternity, takes place in the Church at 6:30PM every Wednesday. The group prays for our Blessed Mother s intercession to end violence (both domestic and civil) and the persecution of Christians throughout the world. All parishioners are invited to join us. New Family Religious Education Registration for Our program consists of Eight Religious Education grades: Kindergarten through 7 th Grade We are now registering children for the school year. You may pick up a registration form at the Religious Education Office located in the school building. The registration fee for forms received after 7/13/17 is $100 for one child, and $125 for two or more children in the same family. If the child was baptized at a Church other than St. Helen, you will need a copy of your child's Baptismal Certificate. If you do not have one available, you should contact the rectory of the Church where your child was baptized. It takes a couple of weeks to process a Baptismal Certificate at most parishes. Place your request now so your registration for our program will not be delayed.
