1 New Hope News October 10, 2012 Trunk or Treat Trunk or treat will be on Halloween Night this year. There will be parking attendants to assure safety for all our trunk or treaters. We will also have Ron McKinney there with his hot air balloon and may even have a friend of Ron's joining in with a second hot air balloon. We are asking for as many trunks as possible to increase the fun, and donated goodies to fill those trunks and hand out to our little guests. We are also making it possible for visitors to use our restrooms and get a drink if needed. We will need a volunteer to sit inside the church as a monitor to insure safety. We also are looking for parking attendant volunteers and the use of saw horses to tie out caution tape to. This will act as a guide for vehicles to use to drive and park in order to help keep the children out of harm s way. Any and all volunteers are appreciated, there will be a fun time had by all who attend. 2 Page 2 Stewardship Thought New Hope News As we give in today s offering, we remember your promises to us because You are the God of miracles and the God of provision. We remember today that You are the reason we are blessed. You have given us the strength to work, start our business, finish our schooling, invest our resources. You are the reason for ALL OF OUR BLESSINGS. And you shall remember the Lord your God, for it is He who gives you power to get wealth, that He may establish His covenant which He swore to your fathers, as it is this day. Deuteronomy 8:18 CROP Walk: A Step in the Right Direction It was a cool, crisp autumn day with no rain, a perfect afternoon for the threemile CROP Walk! With face-painting, balloons, snow cones, hot dogs and all the trimmings, more than 500 walkers were given their "kick-off" by members of the Pride of Oklahoma band, and elementary and high school chor- isters who sang "We Are Walking in the Light of God" as the walk began. New Hope was well represented by TEN walkers: Patricia, Rayford, Lori, Andy, Austin, Sean, Bill, Ruth, Rosco and Eugene! If you don't recognize the names Ruth and Rosco, it's only because you haven't met Patricia and Rayford's mastiff and border collie! Thanks to everyone who contributed peanut butter, tuna and money to support the CROP Walk -- it was a great success. Page ntly Regional Food Bank Adds Coverage for Middle and High Schools Many people have heard of the Regional Food Bank s Food for Kids backpack program, and are familiar with the way the program works and the 13,500 children who receive food every Friday so they won t go hungry over the weekend. However, Food for Kids only covers through 6 th grade. In 2010, Putnam City West High School football coach John Jensen noticed that his players were getting injured at a higher than expected rate. Comparing notes with other area football coaches, some of whom had noticed the same thing but not all coaches had. He quickly realized that the high schools with the highest injury rate were in areas that were predominantly lower income, and consequently many players (and ordinary students) were not eating as well as they should. Last year, volunteers provided more than 120,000 man-hours of free labor to the Regional Food Bank. In addition to the literally millions of meals worth of food these volunteers moved, the labor cost savings enabled Regional Food Bank to provide an additional 4.8 million meals more than what they otherwise would have been able to provide. What that means is that with every hour a volunteer works at the Regional Food Bank, 40 additional meals are able to go out to Oklahomans in need.

5 New Hope Hosts Children s Disaster Services Training Workshop On Friday Oct. 5 th, three groups converged on New Hope to prepare to serve others in the aftermath of disasters. First and foremost was the long-awaited Children s Disaster Services training workshop, which was taught by Myrna Jones, of Tulsa, and Dot Norsen, of Victor, NY. Next to arrive was a canteen truck from the Salvation Army, staffed with volunteers who prepared meals for all participants during the training. And the Cleveland County Red Cross came in and demonstrated how an actual Red Cross shelter would be set up, as well as providing cots, pillows, sheets and blankets for training participants to sleep on Friday night. Children s Disaster Services sets up child care facilities in both FEMA and Red Cross shelters and disaster assistance centers, where volunteers provide a calm, safe, and reassuring presence in the midst of chaos created by tornadoes, floods, hurricanes, wildfires, ice storms, earthquakes any natural or man-made disaster. Myrna Jones, Lead CDS Trainer 11 volunteers, including 9 from New Hope, spent nearly 27 hours together at the church, undergoing training and role-playing exercises covering topics such as the history of CDS, responding to the needs of children of various ages following a disaster, empathic learning skills, and how volunteers need to take care of themselves, physically, emotionally, and spiritually, both during and after serving in a CDS center. Trainees included (l-r) Marietta Combs, Penny Hampton, Sheri Matthews (who drove all the way from Arkansas), and Rayford Johnson When CDS volunteers are deployed to a disaster site, they must bring along toys and other materials for the children in their care to play with. These are put together and assembled into what is known as a Kit of Comfort. These contain items like paints and washable markers, soft dolls, doll blankets, building blocks, toy cars and trucks in short, all sorts of toys that kids can use to play with. 6 Following the training, New Hope s Evening CWF group (several members of which participated in the training) began to plan on creating our own Kit of Comfort. Salvation Army Provides Meals during Training Workshop at New Hope As part of the joint training exercise that was recently held at New Hope, the Central Oklahoma Area Command of the Salvation Army brought a canteen truck, staffed with teams of volunteers, to prepare meals for those participating in the exercise. The truck was equipped with a 6-burner gas stove, ovens, a griddle, a deep-fat fryer, microwave ovens, coffeemaker, its own potable water supply and wastewater storage, as well as a 100-amp diesel-powered generator that can also be used to supply electrical power to buildings. This particular truck was used in 2008 during the hurricane Gustav relief efforts, where in a single 24-hour period and manned by teams of volunteers, they prepared meat dishes for over 40,000 meals. Salvation Army personnel serving during the exercise were Ernie Potter, Kathy Luttrell, Marty Howard, Barbara Admire, Chris Horn, Herb Burghart, and Jeff Lara.
