Church office: The one who supplies seed for planting and bread for eating will supply and multiply your seed and will increase your crop, which is righteousness. You will be made rich in every way so that you can be generous in every way. Such generosity produces thanksgiving to God through us. Your ministry of this service to God s people isn t only fully meeting their needs but it is also multiplying in many expressions of thanksgiving to God. 2 Corinthians 9:10-12 (CEB) November is upon us, which always makes me think of Thanksgiving. Celebrated on the fourth Thursday in November, it comes at the end of the month. Often we see it as the beginning of the holiday season. But as I look at my calendar, we will be full of God s generosity by the time we sit down to our Thanksgiving meals. On November 4, we will complete our fall worship series on God Languages. After worship, we will share a meal and conversation about worship. We will be joined in worship by Rev. Joe Ellwanger, an ELCA pastor who stood alongside Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in Selma and Birmingham. As we celebrate the Sacrament of the Lord s Supper together, we will remember our loved ones who have died as well as those who have given their lives for their faith and work in seeking justice for all people. On November 11, God s provision will be made known as we go out to lead worship at Southminster while also leading worship at home at Tudor Oaks. On November 18, we come together to celebrate the fullness of our mission and life together as we celebrate the many ministries God has called us to and dedicate our pledges of time, talent, and treasure.

2 PAGE 2 Continued... On November 20, we join the Fab Four + Good Shepherd Trinity at Greenfield Avenue Presbyterian. Not only is this an opportunity to worship and celebrate God s many gifts, it is also our participation in the connectional nature of the PC(USA). On November 25, we will welcome a guest preacher as I spend the weekend in East Lansing with my family. The graciousness of our shared ministry allows me these extra Sundays to fulfill my call to my family (especially this year since Jack isn t able to come home for Thanksgiving). November is a month of the multiplying expressions of our thanksgiving to God. May we partake fully in the many opportunities to celebrate God s generosity and the beauty of our life together. 3 PAGE 3 Do not fear, for I am with you Do not be afraid, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you.(isaiah 41:10) Presbyterian Disaster Assistance (PDA) is offering immediate aid to the communities impacted by Hurricane Michael. This joins responses already underway for those impacted by Hurricane Florence, Typhoon Mangkhut, and other international disasters that have suffered a lack of media coverage. Hurricane Michael struck the Florida panhandle with devastating winds and storm surge, causing loss of life. The storm then cut a path across the southeast, moving through the same areas impacted by Hurricane Florence just a few weeks ago. PDA is deploying teams to affected presbyteries. Emergency aid, assistance in the development of a short-term response plan, as well as a ministry of presence will be the priorities of the initial response. Meanwhile, areas impacted by Mangkhut and Florence have received aid and support through the gifts of Presbyterians like you. In humility, with God and your continued support, we will continue to help draw hope out of the chaos, together.

4 PAGE 4 PDA, continued... GIVE: Hurricanes Michael and Florence and Typhoon Mangkhut have caused extensive damage and loss of life. Some of you have already given generously in previous weeks. While the needs can feel overwhelming, continued prayer and giving will ensure that the whole church is able to respond. Gifts to DR support our response to hurricanes and typhoons. PRAY: As this hurricane and typhoon season continues to cause destruction and loss of life, please pray with us that the communities affected by these events and those offering assistance will be strengthened, have their needs met and be reminded of the hope found in God. More About Mangkhut On September 28, 2018 Central Sulawesi in Indonesia was hit by a 7.4 magnitude earthquake, which resulted in a tsunami and later a volcanic eruption. The death toll is more than 1,700 and as many as 62,600 persons are displaced. The dire situation is further compounded with the rainy season approaching with the anticipation of diseases, which are easily spread in shelters. PDA is working through our partners in ACT Alliance to provide emergency assistance. Priorities are minimizing loss of life and to ensure that the needs of the most vulnerable are covered first. Presbyterian Disaster Assistance, through our partners on the ground, is responding to this disaster. Designate gifts to DR to support this response.

5 PAGE 5 Our Giving Here s an update on Heritage s giving to the PCUSA s four denominational offerings for 2018, with the Joy Offering from 2017 included. Pastor's Bible Study Join us as we reflect on the texts for the coming Sunday. We meet at 1:00 p.m. every Tuesday of the month except the third Tuesday. On Nov. 6, the Bible Study group will meet in the Health Center Conference Room. (Nov. 6 is Election Day, so we had to change rooms.) 6 PAGE 6 The Burr Oak Tree Cross One of the gifts of God to Heritage was the 350-year-old burr oak tree that rose from behind and above the Heritage church building. It was used as a symbol in past logos of Heritage and was an admired gift of God as we gazed out the windows of our fellowship area. The cross is from a branch of that tree and is a reminder of our history. It is the first of other Christian symbols that are being fashioned by a wood-working artisan. When all are completed, the set will enhance our worship services. Presbytery Prayer Group You are invited to join the Presbytery office staff and friends in prayer on the 3rd Thursday of each month, from 1:00-1:30 p.m. at the Presbytery office.
