1 October 23, 2013 As New Hope we are Disciples of Christ striving to bring Heaven to earth through nurturing, serving and connecting New Sermon Series Starting this Sunday we are beginning a new sermon series called "Living Together". In this sermon series we will be using wisdom given to us in the 4th chapter of Ephesians (where Paul is dealing with a fairly unruly church) to learn and to be reminded of some of the practical things we all must do to live together. The goal for this sermon series to help us all come to terms with the realities of being a part of a community and most importantly what we can accomplish if we learn to work together. It s almost Halloween which means it s time to get ready for our annual Trunk or Treat at NHCC. The Evangelism Committee will need a lot of help to make this evening the special event it has been in the past. Fist we need trunks the more the better! Just bring your car and park it so you can hand out treats from the back. Costumes are optional but they are a lot of fun! Next we need volunteers to attend all the different stations that it will take to cover everything traffic control, balloon ride waivers, etc. And of course, most important of all, we will need treats-lots and lots of Treats. (otherwise we have to call the event Trunks and nobody will show up for trunks!) We need individually wrapped candy, gum, and other treats. Just pick up a bag or two when you re at the grocery store or Wal-Mart, bring it to the church before October 31st and leave it in the container provided. 3 Page 3 Dear NHCC Members, Believe it or not 2014 is just around the corner and the Stewardship Committee needs your help as members of the NHCC Congregation. It is that time of year that the Stewardship committee will be preparing the 2014 budget and your pledges help NHCC to meet its basic needs. Our giving provides a regular, predictable source of funding so the church can meet its practical responsibilities. Every church has fixed monthly expenses: building maintenance, utilities, salaries, etc. Please take time to complete and remit the pledge card you have received by placing in the offering plate on Sunday. Should you need a pledge card just ask and "you shall receive". We are Disciples of Christ striving to bring Heaven to Earth by Nurturing Serving and Connecting. Thanks for your prayers and commitment to New Hope Christian Church Stewardship Committee A Future with Hope. What s next! I intend as a servant of the Lord to give to my church in the coming year. (Please Circle One) Weekly Now Lord what am I waiting for my hope is in you Psalm 39:7 Monthly $ Annually I understand that this pledge can be raised or lowered at any time by notifying the financial secretary of the church. 4 October 23, 2013 New Hope Nurtures On Saturday, October 19, New Hope held its first Fall Festival for youth and children. We had in attendance approximately 30 people (children and adults). Due to an abrupt change in the weather, the festival was changed from outside to inside the fellowship hall. "As a kick-off the Fall Fest activities, the children released helium balloons and we watched them float fast away until they were out of sight." Hay bales were brought in to set the scene as well as scarecrows and pumpkins. God gave to us a beautiful fall day Saturday afternoon so we were able to hold some events outside anyway. There was lots to do. There was corn shucking, bobbing for apples, pumpkin painting and pumpkin carving, pie eating contest, sack races and wheel barrow races. And a pie in the face contest which was won by Bill Shenold. All the children got to smash mini cream pies in Bill's face. Thank you Bill, for being such a good sport. We had hot dogs, macaroni and cheese and fresh corn on the cob to eat. For dessert we had homemade s'mores, with a choice of gooey or extra gooey marshmallow. Yum! Thank you to everyone who attended the festival. Special thank you to all who helped get the festival ready and conduct events as well as clean up afterwards. Don and George, thank you very much for getting the hay for us. God Bless! IMPORTANT NOTICE!! This Sunday, October 27, all children are asked to wear their Halloween costumes to church for a special Children's Moment. Children s Choir Sunday, November 17 9:30a.m. We ll Sing in Worship!!
5 Page 5 New Hope Serves NHCC at Refuge Fellowship Once again New Hope took a turn serving the homeless of downtown Oklahoma City on Monday the 21st, at Refuge Fellowship Church, 520 W. Main St. Not only did we serve a meal, we also brought all the items donated through a winter clothing and diaper drive we had been holding for the past 2 to 3 weeks. Refuge is really growing! They're averaging between 70 and 85 people in attendance at each Monday night service, and the 21st was no exception, with 73 on hand despite the weather, with the overnight low forecasted for 48. We brought over 125 servings of chicken ala king, served over rice, with a dinner salad with croutons and a choice of dressings, along with dinner rolls and peach and cherry cobbler for desert; we also brought some marinated chicken breasts in case we had someone with a food allergy, or simply didn't like mushrooms. We gave out every single bit of what we brought (including 9 pots of coffer), and made sure no one went away hungry. Typically, at homeless shelters people get a single pass through the line to get their food; the food is rationed pretty tightly, naturally, due to the demand. However, when we serve at Refuge, we make sure we have plenty, and even have enough to allow people to take a little extra with them to wherever they're going. On the winter clothing and baby diaper drive, we had nearly an entire full-sized pickup full of boxes of clothing and shoes. These too, went very quickly; Refuge has a partner that assists with such things, and he keeps track of any leftovers and brings them back from week to week. But I'd estimate that around 90% of the items we brought found new homes. The ministry at Refuge Fellowship is growing by leaps and bounds. Rev. Noel Gray, pastor at Refuge Fellowship, has partnered with the Homeless Alliance here in OKC, to help expedite the process of getting the homeless off the streets, and it's really beginning to help, to change the lives of those less fortunate. She's also working on some means of assisting Refuge members in finding transportation to and from jobs. Refuge is truly beginning to bring hope to those who for so long have been without hope, and it's a wonderful feeling to be involved with such a ministry. New Hope's next opportunity to serve at Refuge Fellowship will be on Dec. 2nd. Stay tuned for more news and how you can become involved in this truly life-changing ministry Don t forget Food Cabinet Sunday! On November 3rd NHCC will again be collecting non-perishable food items and money to help feed the less fortunate in our community. Just pick up an extra can of tuna or jar of peanut butter when you are buying your groceries. You probably won t even notice the difference, but for some family it could mean the difference in putting their kids to bed hungry or well-fed.
6 October 23, 2013 New Hope Connects NHCC Page 5 Connections Pardon the Mess! Work has begun on the Fellowship Hall Renovation.
