1 January 6, 2019; Volume 96, Number 1 SAVAGE STREET Church of Christ Our History: The Savage Street Church of Christ began on March 4, 1923 at 6th and H Streets. After sometime on Evelyn Street, we moved to our present location on March 20, Join us in 2023 when we celebrate our 100th anniversary! Blessings We Have in Christ Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ, just as He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before Him in love, having predestined us to adoption as sons by Jesus Christ to Himself, according to the good pleasure of His will, to the praise of the glory of His grace, by which He made us accepted in the Beloved. In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of His grace which He made to abound toward us in all wisdom and prudence, having made known to us the mystery of His will, according to His good pleasure which He purposed in Himself, that in the dispensation of the fullness of the times He might gather together in one all things in Christ, both which are in heaven and which are on earth in Him. In Him also we have obtained an inheritance, being predestined according to the purpose of Him who works all things according to the counsel of His will, that we who first trusted in Christ should be to the praise of His glory. In Him you also trusted, after you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation; in whom also, having believed, you were sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise, who is the guarantee of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, to the praise of His glory (Ephesians ). 5 Dearest Savage Street family. Another year has gone by and we are all so blessed to look upon a new year. First of all I wanted to say thank you for letting me serve you all as the Church Secretary. I am very blessed to serve you and thank you for your friendship and encouragement. As I said before, another year has gone and I wanted to highlight some things from the year. Savage Street continues to steadily support missions around the world that are bringing others to Christ and have recently started supporting Caleb Parker at Preaching School this last year. We were able to take up a special contribution for Don Iverson's work in India in the amount of $3,847. We also sent $13,151 to help the fire victims in Paradise, CA. Earlier in the year the kids washed cars and were able to collect funds to help the Church of Christ Disaster Relief Fund with the Redding, CA fire and The Mountain States Children's Home. On that same note, Church members take home change cans every year to fill up for the Mountain States Children's home and were able to collect to send. The Church also had another successful Vacation Bible School this year and hosted our yearly seminar, this year on Atheism with Ralph Gilmore. Before we know it it VBS will be here again. The Savage Street youth attended the yearly Leadership Training for Christ in California last spring and are currently studying the book of John for the upcoming LTC convention this year. Many members have invested in getting our kids ready for this convention and they put a lot of loving work and time into LTC; thank you to all who help. Our youth also stay busy learning the word of God at numerous Church camps over the summer. I want to specially mention the growth of our youth group and want to say a special thanks to Mike and Andrea Crisp for the love, devotion and energy they put into the spiritual lives of our kids. They keep them busy with all sorts of activities. It is such a special work. This last year has been busy and full of growth for all of the kids. Recently the Elders and Don have decided that it would be okay if the young men started leading singing on Sunday evenings. They also rotate reading scripture on Sunday evenings. We have a good group of kids here. Please continue to encourage and disciple these kids. They are the future of the Church and if you are a prayer warrior for one of the kids here, remember to pray for your kid through out this next year. This year we have lost loved ones and have have been blessed with new members to the body of Christ. I think that we have a close knit family here and I see how much love people have for others in the Church. As always keep praying for those babies to pop up in the pews. (I'm serious.) I put up a new volunteer board for the year next to the teacher's supply room. We are like a jigsaw puzzle that God put together and each of us has our God-given gift to serve the Church. I want to challenge you to sign up and try something new this year. Let's fill up every slot for the year. How about a new greeter for every month? It's just a thought. I wish you all a blessed new year. Just as each of us has one body with many members, and these members do not all have the same function, so in Christ we who are many form one body, and each member belongs to all the others. We have different gifts, according to the grace given us. If a man s gift is prophesying, let him use it in proportion to his faith. If it is serving, let him serve; if it is teaching, let him teach; if it is encouraging, let him encourage; if it is contributing to the needs of others, let him give generously; if it is leadership, let him govern diligently; if it is showing mercy, let him do it cheerfully. We have a great group of 11 kids signed up who will be learning several songs of praise and worship. They will prepare a program to present at the LTC convention in April but will share it with the congregation before they leave Contribution Open & Close Building This effort is a way to help the kids be a more active part of the worship services, and to be greater contributors to our worship as a congregation. Each practice will begin at 5:00 on Sunday afternoons and conclude in time for the 6:00 worship hour. The first practice will be today. See Kerri with any questions. 8 RUHL S RULES Wisdom from Proverbs 6.1 2: The Danger of Becoming Surety for Another Person My son, if you become surety for your friend, if you have shaken hands in pledge for a stranger, you are snared by the words of your mouth; you are taken by the words of your mouth (Proverbs 6.1 2). Surety is making yourself responsible for another person, as in this case of debts. The intention maybe good, but how can we guarantee something. We do not know the future. The danger: you become snared and taken by the words of your mouth. Yet, we are not to become bondservants of men: You were bought at a price; do not become slaves of men (1 Corinthians 7.23). Solomon also warned: The rich rules over the poor, and the borrower is servant to the lender (Proverbs 22.7). Troubles vs. Blessings Your Storms are only temporary, but the Blessings of God last Forever. Unknown Finding Love The best way to find love is to find God.
