Suggested Schedule: Arrival Centers 25 minutes Clean-up Time 5 minutes Bible Story Time 15 minutes Craft Time 10 minutes Snack Time 10 minutes Game Time/Dismissal Hour A Unfolding God s Story for Teachers Please read today s passages. There are four accounts in the Bible of this special dinner Jesus observed with the Twelve. Matthew, Mark and Luke all record the event, as well as Paul. All differ in their emphases, but a common thread would be Jesus desire for them to remember Him. Jesus knew His time on this earth was short. He wanted this Passover celebration truly to be a time of remembrance. It probably was not until after Jesus death that the disciples fully realized the meaning. The Passover and the Feast of the Unleavened Bread were originally two different but closely related feasts. The dates of each overlapped so they came to be referred to as one eight-day feast called by either name. Jerusalem always was crowded during this celebration because the Passover had to be eaten within the city walls. Jews of all generations filled the streets; because of limited accommodations, everyone s home was open to visitors. Jesus used this celebration not only to reflect on the past, but to help His friends see the future. It is probable the usual meal of roasted lamb, unleavened bread, bitter herbs and wine were served to honor the Passover. However, Jesus offered a new element. He used a loaf of bread and a cup of wine to give His friends a taste of the future. After giving thanks for both, He asked His disciples to take and eat of His body and drink of His blood. The cup of wine symbolized the blood Jesus soon would spill His blood poured out for forgiveness of your sin and mine. In the Old Testament, the covenant given to Moses was sealed as the blood of a sacrificial animal was thrown upon the altar and upon the people. This was to symbolize the bond between God and Israel. The prophet Jeremiah spoke of a new covenant, with the law not written upon stones but upon the hearts of men who come to know God through the forgiveness of sin. The bread symbolized Jesus body freely given so we might have life eternal. By eating the bread, we symbolically are taking Jesus internally so the covenant is written on our hearts. I have been crucified with Christ; and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I now live in the flesh, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me (Gal. 2:19b-20). The dinner did not mark the beginning of Jesus defeat, but victory. Jesus said, Remember Me, that is, Remember what I have done for you. Remember I will drink this cup again with you at the banquet of banquets! Let us remember with confidence, hope and eager anticipation, because we can celebrate forgiveness. Lesson Plan Arrival Greet children at eye level and express how happy you are to see them. Be sure each child has a name tag and the security measures of your church are followed. Label all coats and personal belongings. Strongly encourage children who have brought items from home, such as toys and books, to place them on a shelf while they are working with other materials. Assure children their items will be safe and they can take them home at the end of the session. Help each child make a choice where he or she would like to begin his or her Center Time. Comment that Jesus asked His friends to do something for Him; listen to hear what Jesus asked of them. Bible Story A Special Meal (Matt.26:17-30; 1 Cor. 11:23-26) Jesus and His disciples had been together for three years. He had taught His helpers about God and how they were to live. Soon there would be a celebration called Passover, and Jesus wanted to have a special meal with His friends. Jesus asked two of his friends, Peter and John, to get what they would need for the meal. They asked Jesus, Where do You want us to prepare the meal? Jesus said, Go into the city, and you will meet a man carrying a jar. Tell him I want to eat a special meal with My friends at his house. So Jesus friends went into the city and found the man carrying a jar. He led them to the place where they would have the meal. The disciples worked hard to get everything ready for the celebration. When it was time to eat, Jesus and His friends reclined at the table. Jesus took some bread and thanked God. Then He broke the bread into pieces and served it to His friends. Next, Jesus took a cup and gave thanks to God. He passed the cup to His friends. They each drank from the cup. Jesus asked His friends to do something for Him. Jesus asked, Remember the things we have done together and remember this special night. After the meal, Jesus and His helpers sang a song. Talk Time 1. Show the teaching picture and ask the following: What did Jesus want to do with His friends? Why do you think Jesus wanted to have a meal? What did Jesus ask His friends to do? Do you think they remembered? 2. Point to the Bible Phrase at the bottom of the teaching picture. Say the phrase together. Reinforce to preschoolers that Jesus loves us so and wants us to live our lives in a way that honors Him. Comment that in this way we are remembering Jesus when we do what pleases Him. 3. Close Bible Story Time by inviting children to join you in prayer. Pray asking God to help us live lives that honor Jesus. 4. Direct children to Craft Time God s Unfolding Story for Older Preschoolers, Copyright SundaySchoolZone.com NT07 Lesson 3 Hour A Page 3

Link to Bible Story: As children work, talk about the special meal Jesus had with His disciples and the food Jesus served. Talk about ways we can show that we remember and honor Jesus such as: worship, prayer, coming to church, giving to our church and to others, helping people who are in need. Snack Time Be sure to wash hands or use hand sanitizer. Say a thank-you prayer to God for the snack. When snack time has ended, encourage preschoolers to help with cleaning up. Game Time/Dismissal Pass the Beanbag Small beanbag What to Do: Ask children to sit in a circle. Begin the game by inviting children to pass the beanbag to the friend sitting next to him or her. After the first round, begin counting as the children pass the bag. When the teacher counts to five, the child holding the bag gets to lead in saying the Bible Phase, Jesus said, Remember Me (Luke 22:19). Remind boys and girls that at the special meal with Jesus and His friends, Jesus broke the bread and passed it to His friends. Comment that Jesus wanted His friends to remember Him and the things He had taught. Dismiss children as parents arrive. Be sure to follow the security procedures of your church.
