4 FEATURE Q A & Among the Flock Justin Harris Pastor, Membership Ministries As you survey the Scriptures looking at the responsibilities of elders, Peter makes it particularly clear that elders are to shepherd the flock of God among them (1 Peter 5:2). That little word, among, is a helpful preposition. It implies that the leaders are in regular contact with the people and are familiar with their needs; concepts like relationship, accessibility, and closeness come to mind. Clearly, pastors do their most fruitful work among the sheep, not apart from them. Although the leaders of our church are regularly among the people, the size of our church can sometimes make it difficult to benefit from this kind of relationship. To help address this challenge, the elders have begun hosting a regular time of interaction and fellowship for all who may be interested. These special sessions are designed to enable you to meet the elders in a more intimate setting, allow you to ask questions about our church, expose you to the depth and breadth of the ministry here, and introduce you to other church members. Anyone interested in becoming more familiar with our church and our leaders is encouraged to attend. I encourage you to join us, learn more about our church, cultivate new relationships, and enjoy the kind of fellowship that comes from the intimacy of being among the flock. 5 Keeping Special Ministries Moving Rick McLean Pastor, Special Ministries Transportation is always challenging for the disabled community. When physical circumstances limit your ability to ride in a standard vehicle, something as simple as finding a ride to church can seem like an insurmountable obstacle. But like so many ministries in our church, this obstacle became the seed of opportunity that led to the formation of our transportation ministry more than 35 years ago. It started in 1979, when Joni Eareckson Tada began to attend our church. Joni, who drove a specially equipped van, created a heightened awareness that we needed a way to bring the physically disabled to us. That led to the purchase of our first van equipped with a lift that same year. By 1987 the ministry had grown enough to require a bus, which allowed us to pick up an expanding group of physically disabled people. Today we have four vehicles that go out every Sunday. Two vans and two mini-buses a blessing made possible two years ago through the generosity of a special, dedicated offering allow us to pick up nearly 30 disabled people for church every Sunday morning. But while these vehicles form our Special Ministries fleet, it s faithful people that keep everything moving. Currently we are in need of six drivers to serve one Sunday a month. You don t need a special license, and we provide the training. This is a great opportunity to make a tangible difference in the lives of the disabled members of our church family. Local Outreach Spotlight Castaic Jail Ministry Every Sunday members from Grace Church go to the North County Correctional Facility in Castaic to proclaim the gospel. This is a volunteer position in a fun, mommy-and-me preschool environment.
