Offering 3-way interviews, where the student provides this feedback to their family is our ultimate goal. Therefore we will be taking the opportunity at this year s meetings to mirror what these would potentially look like with classroom teachers taking on the role of the student, informing parents of the child s learning goals, strengths, what the child can and can t do and where to from here. Feedback will be given to parents about Writing and Mathematics with 5 minutes allocated to each area. Parents will not be given the option to book a double time slot for these meeting however are encouraged to make an appointment to discuss any other concerns they may have at another time. The school has recently subscribed to an online booking service called SOBS (Schools Online Booking Service) SOBS is designed for simplicity, the Parent/Teacher booking system provides a facility for parents to book their interviews online. Parents will be able access the system at any time, day or night. They have no codes or pin numbers to remember, and a series of simple screens and prompts to assist them to make their interview bookings. Parents will feel empowered as they interact directly with the live system - selecting the teachers they wish to see and time slots that are both convenient and suitable. More information will be communicated with parents as the time draws nearer. Reports will be sent out in Week 9 with Parent Teacher interviews being held in Week 10. 2 Pentecost This Sunday is the feast of Pentecost. The birthday of the church. In the Acts of the Apostles we are told that the crowd who heard the earliest disciples of Jesus understood them in his or her own language. Now that s clarity! It wasn t so much the gift of tongues the earliest disciples received as much as their hearers received the gift of ears, of listening. At the first Pentecost, the earliest Christians knew that speaking the same language was not as important as was careful listening to one another. The early Church was a very complex and diverse community however they had their struggles with one another, this is to similar in todays society. Within a few years of the first Pentecost, there were fights between Peter and Paul over Jewish and Gentile converts. There were people who died for the faith and others who betrayed them to the authorities. Some Christians thought they were for Paul rather than for Jesus, and still others thought the end of the world was near. Through it all, however, the bass notes played: the life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. The feast of Pentecost tells us that while we build our faith on that of all the believers who have gone before us, we have the responsibility to listen, we are not allowed to retreat from the world but are sent out to enter into conversation with it, and hear in this dialogue the God that is in the here and now of our daily life. While always keeping in mind the bass line of Christ s life, death and resurrection. Let s pray that this Pentecost hones our ears as well as prepares our tongues to clearly receive and proclaim the Gospel of Christ in the our own day and age. CHURCH CLEANERS: We would love another couple of volunteers for church cleaning, which is only every 6-7 weeks. Please contact the office. CHOSEN YOUTH: Topic Night PENTECOST. When Laura found out the school was offering instrumental lessons she jumped head first into the clarinet as her father played the clarinet and she said she loves the sound. She says she enjoys playing in the band because the music sounds so good and she loves to listen to instrumental music. She hopes in 10 years time she will still be playing the clarinet for her family and having a great time with it. She says if you want to be good at playing the clarinet you must learn to tongue the sound early on and don t leave it too late because then it becomes difficult to get right. Laura believes that to be a good team player in the band it s important to know what your role is and to always respect the band director. She likes to imagine that the best gigs are when a whole load of people are watching and loving the entertainment. She wants to send a message out to all those students thinking about learning an instrument. She said There is no reason not to try and learn an instrument. There are so many instruments to choose from, so why not? If you do learn an instrument, never give up and don t stop trying. Thanks Laura. Congratulations again.

4 Garden Club Week 2, Term 2. Insects alive! We are up and running again for Term 2, starting with a native bee house! More than 20 of our green thumbs helped put together the school s newest environmental feature using recycled bricks, timber, bamboo, grass tree spikes, clay and pithy sticks. Students learnt that there are 1500 native bee species in Australia, and that they are mainly solitary, with only 20 that are social and that produce honey. Students already had some pretty good knowledge about why bees are so important to our existence pollination & food. We will learn more about these little creatures as the year progresses. 6 St Joseph s Fundraising Pie Drive... Due to the success of our Pie Drive in 2016 it was decided that we would run it again this year. The time has come to put in your orders!!!! Please order up BIG, the more orders we have the more money raised for our kids & our school! Get onto any family & friends to add to your order! All goods are coming from the famed 'Ganmain Bakery' (who doesn't love a Ganmain Pie?) All pies & lamingtons will be freshly baked so ready to put into the freezer if you wish. Great idea for a quick & easy family friendly meal in the colder weather! A variety of flavours to choose from with family & individual sizes available along with sausage rolls and lamingtons. Order forms and money are due back to school no later than Wednesday 27th June. Orders will be available to collect from the school hall between 12-4pm on Thursday the 5th July. A hard copy of the order form will also be sent home with the children

9 Fire & Rescue NSW Open Day 2018 Winter is just around the corner so it s a great time to visit your local Fire & Rescue NSW Fire Station and learn more about how to be home fire safe In an effort to educate the community about fire prevention and safety, Fire & Rescue NSW is hosting its annual Open Day this Saturday, 19th May 2018 between 10.00am and 2.00pm. You and your family are invited to visit your local station for home fire safety tips, hop on a fire truck and chat with firefighters to learn more about what they do every day. From chemical spills, car accidents and natural disasters to education, prevention and humanitarian relief, across the state, across the country and even overseas, our firefighters are prepared for anything, anywhere, anytime.
