1 Issue 3-14th March 2018 Gospel Reading for this Sunday, 18 th March, Fifth Sunday of Lent John 12:20-33 Jesus teaches his disciples about the way in which he will be glorified by God, and a voice from heaven is heard to affirm this teaching Family Connection Family life is often a balancing act in which we prioritise and attend to a variety of competing needs. We learn the value of putting others needs ahead of our own. In family life we also learn that when we make personal sacrifices to serve others, we gain so much more than we may have lost. As you gather as a family, talk about how important it is to your family life to gladly serve one another. Ask each person to consider the last time that another family member asked for help. What was your response? Did you cheerfully try to honour the request, or did you ask Why me? Read Sunday s Gospel, John 12: How do you think Jesus would want us to respond when someone in our family asks for help? Invite each family member to make a commitment for the next week to try to respond cheerfully to requests for help. Pray together, asking God s help with this commitment. 6 Pastoral Care and Wellbeing FRIDAY - 16 TH MARCH 2018 What is National Bullying, No Way! Day? The eighth National Day of Action against Bullying and Violence is on this Friday, and we are celebrating this day at our school. As a School Community we are Taking a Stand Together and Stamping bullying out of our School Community. This annual day is Australia's key anti-bullying event for schools, and encourages all students to 'take a stand together' against bullying and violence in schools, the classroom and beyond. Whole school approach: This year Australian schools are invited to share their BIG IDEAS for a world free from bullying within their communities. We are asking for every student to trace their hand on coloured cardboard/paper and respond to this question: Is our school ready to imagine a world free from bullying? Students can draw a picture or write their response. These hands will then be up on display near the library. For any further information or support please visit the below website. BREAKFAST CLUB Is now operating successfully from the new kitchenette in the hall. Easily accessible with plenty of space. Lots of children are utilising this free facility to charge their brains ready for some valuable and important learning. Donations welcome: VEGEMITE JAM HONEY BUTTER

7 RE Newsletter On Wednesday, 7th March, the St. Peter Chanel Church celebrated 30 years as a parish. We united in this celebration at our beautiful Church with some moving Prayers and symbolic artwork of our Church, by our Grade 5/6 class. It was wonderful to come together with some of our parishioners and acknowledge this milestone. Next Friday, 17 th March, is a well known day of festivities in many parts of the world. Yes, it s St. Patrick s Day! St. Patrick is the patron saint of Ireland despite having been born in Britain to wealthy parents near the end of the fourth century. He is believed to have died on March 17th, around 460 A.D. At the age of 16, Patrick was taken prisoner by a group of Irish raiders who were attacking his family s estate. They transported him to Ireland where he spent six years in captivity. During this time, he worked as a shepherd, outdoors and away from people. Lonely and afraid, he turned to his religion for solace, becoming a devout Christian. Patrick eventually became a missionary after he escaped his captivity and commenced religious training. Once ordained as a priest, he ministered to Christians already living in Ireland and began to convert the Irish. Did you know? St. Patrick created what is now well known as the Celtic cross (at the time, most Irish practiced a nature-based pagan religion). He superimposed a sun, a powerful Irish symbol, onto the Christian cross so that veneration of the symbol would seem more natural to the Irish. *To celebrate St. Patrick s Day at SPC, Gr. 4 will be leading us in a Prayer Service in the Multipurpose Hall at 12:20pm and we welcome you to join us. Catholic Education Week begins on 19 th March and the theme is: Discovering New Horizons. This theme has been aligned with the official Year of Youth theme for 2018 and is derived from a speech given by Pope Francis at World Youth Day 2016 where he called young people and the Church to open new horizons for spreading joy. Catholic Education Week is an acknowledgement of the contribution the Catholic education is to the lives of the over 16,000 and about strengthening relationships between all those that have a stake in our schools students, teachers, parents, priests, parishioners and members of the wider community. One of the central pillars of Catholic education is creating a sense of belonging and community and providing the support that is integral to enabling students become the best versions of themselves, said Director of Catholic Education, John Mula. Youth Mass will be held at on Palm Sunday, 25 th March, at 5pm. Come celebrate with us! *Altar servers for Youth Mass, Sunday 25th March at 5pm are: Jordan & Alexis Donovan.
